Theire unofficial motto is : "First to arrive, last to leave." Beside that you have stict rules the first few years, you are part of legion all the time, you wear the uniform all the time, can't get married.. etc You can get back your name and nationality after you served if you want it. They are respected but also fear, for many soldier the legion became their family and due to their activity and the uprooting of their culture/country/past. But the time where you have war criminal, drug traffickers et stuff like that is a story from the past mainly.

They had a recruiting office at Kandahar Airfield near the boardwalk. I stopped in and wished them a happy Camaron Day in my atrociously bad French. The 2 legionnaires in the office solemnly thanked me. Then the sergeant told me my French was shit. Viva la Guerre, Viva la Mort

Nowadays…after some time (1-3 years) they are obligated to change your given name with your real name. They will hand you an official document for that. Exactly to avoid stupid legal issues in France or abroad….while serving the FFL and to also avoid certain restrictions.

Interpol is a reference agency, they don't have authority in any country in Europe. They have investigators but they always work in cooperation with the local police. They cooperate with the FBI but have no authority in the US.
