Sanjeev Shilpakar tried to give some context as to why the 1986 World Cup performance by Maradona is arguably the greatest individual performance by a footballer in a single edition of the World Cup but the explanation could have been better. To truly understand Maradona’s achievement in that world cup, we need to understand what happened leading up to that game against England. In the 1982 WC, there were huge expectations from a 21-year old Maradona but he failed to deliver. Infact, he got sent-off against Brazil for petulantly kicking his opponent and the football world dismissed him as a petulant child who showed flashes of genius but didn’t have the temperament to be truly great. Similar thing happened in the 1984 Copa Del Rey final when Barcelona lost 1-0 and Maradona was sent-off for violent conduct. Off the field, Argentina was fighting a war against England, the Falklands war. English media absolutely hated Argentina and the Argentinians. By this time, they had trashed Maradona in the papers calling him a playboy, “all blings no end product footballer”. And then came the1986 WC. The national newspaper of Argentina, having no faith in their team, wrote a headline saying - “We are sending 3 footballers and 8 passengers to the WC”. Apart from Maradona, Valdano, Passarella, Argentinians themselves had no trust in their own players. Against this backdrop, Maradona assembled a formidable team, gave them a purpose and led them to the QFinals where they met England. The world called this game the Falklands War on a football pitch. Alf Ramsey, the English manager of 1966 WC winning team, called Maradona’s team “dogs”. When the entire world was watching, when all the pressure was on Maradona to save their faces, Maradona DELIVERED. Not just delivered, proved to everyone why he was the best and restored Argentinian pride. THIS MATTERS !!! And if you think that solo goal against England was a fluke, watch his goal against Belgium in the semis - dribbled past 4 defenders and while his body is falling on one side, he manages to kick the ball in the opposite direction, defying gravity to score a goal. So to everyone before you dismiss Maradona, ask yourself how many world cup knockout goals has your hero scored and of what magnitude? I bet none compares to Maradona’s. Oh by the way, who gave the assist, the defense piercing through-ball that led to the WC winning goal in the final by Burruchaga against W. Germany - yeah it was Maradona !

Maradona's personality is also the reason for his downfall. Maradona had a short and explosive carrer. Messi is more reserve and very much skilled as Maradona but as person and as a footballer, Messi is a good influence for other footballer and general people than Maradona. Maradona might have been a god but he was and is a bad influence. Having lots of child and women, which he never cared for, should not be considered a quality for a great personality.
