The song is about a man who, awaiting his execution in the electric chair, begs the prison chaplain to pass a final message on to his wife. Robin Gibb, who wrote the lyrics, said that the man's crime was the murder of his wife's lover.

The song is about a man who, awaiting his execution in the electric chair, begs the prison chaplain to pass a final message on to his wife. Robin Gibb, who wrote the lyrics, said that the man's crime was the murder of his wife's lover, though the lyrics do not explicitly allude to the identity of the victim. Robin said, "This is about a prisoner on Death Row who only has a few hours to live. He wants the prison chaplain to pass on a final message to his wife. There's a certain urgency about it. Myself and Barry wrote it.

In the late 60s the Bee Gees had five members, the three Gib brothers who were the vocalists, and two non brothers who did drums & lead guitar. Barry played rhythm guitar and Maurice played bass. In the 70s they reduced the band to just three brothers, but hired studio musicians for recording and touring musicians for live performances.

Oh, one more thing before I forget: they have more, many more songs that are as good as this one, or even better. 😳 It's his voice and with this song, the subject matter, but mostly it's Robin's voice that makes you emotional. He's the one on the far left on the cover. You should see a live of them when they were young, like To Love Somebody. Everyone says 'oh, Barry had that falsetto' like for the disco songs, and he did, but his falsetto was more tremolo than vibrato while Robins's was vibrato and his high vocals were true voice rather than the open falsetto sound. Okay, I'm rambling, but they could all do falsettos easily and well. They all had amazing range and talent. Mo preferred his bass to singing lead, but there are a few with him on lead. Barry and Robin shared lead, but Barry gets the spotlight most of the time because of the disco falsetto stuff. Robin is the man for this plaintive emotional absolutely fragile voice that makes you want to cry.

The song is about a man on death row awaiting execution by electric chair & desperately trying to get a message to his wife, with time running out ⏳ Your journey with these guys will be 60’s, 70’s, 80’s ! The Bee Gees were so popular…. And dear Hector you picked one of their very best 👍💜 this one makes me cry every time 🥲. Please don’t get down, this is a song of love and you can’t help but replay, replay,replay to get his message. Robin Gibb’s voice is amazing ! Another special song is I Started A Joke 💔 Please play 1971 BeeGees recording of How Can You Mend A Broken Heart AND then go to 1972 Al Green’s recording , for your 70’s decade, you won’t be disappointed 💎🔥☮️🇨🇦 1970’s !!!💥💥💥

The Bee Gees started off as the three boys in Australia. Then they went back to England and put together a band, which is this period. Later they ended up becoming just the three brothers again. Every track off that best of the Bee Gees album is stunning. Great reaction... that's what the Bee Gees specialized in, before they moved into R&B and disco

Yes, that voice of Robin Gibb is unforgettable, undeniable and phenomenal. Voice of an angel. So vulnerable and almost delicate like it might break any second. May be my favorite voice ever. If you want to hear more of his songs on lead, listen to I Started a Joke, Massachusetts, For Whom The Bell Tolls. The first one was his signature song. Don't watch the live version in Melbourne whatever you do or you'll just cry your eyes out at his voice if nothing else. He got a 2 minute ovation for that I think it was. His son made sure he was buried to that song when he died. He wrote it when he was on a plane at 16 years old. The three brothers: Robin, Barry, and Maurice, pronounced Morris and called Mo, wrote in the neighborhood of 1000 songs, and none of them could read or write a note of music. They recorded sharing a microphone oftentimes and no one records like that. They had a younger brother named Andy who looked and sounded SO much like Barry. He had a short career - check out I Just Want To Be Your Everything - because he died in his 30s due to drug issues that he couldn't kick because of his losing the love of his life Victoria Principal who was a tv star and left him over his drug issues. These guys are worth a very deep dive one of these days!

Turns out it was when they were 18 it was written, and maybe (just barely) 19 when recorded. Robin got the melody for it when he was on a plane. @@kthor ETA: This was edited to fix a typo for anyone wondering. I had originally written 18 as the second age when I meant 19. 18 wouldn't make any sense anyway with the rest of my sentence. 2nd ETA: I don't want to be accused (again) of 'trying to *cover* it up' by fixing a typo, as if I'm trying to be sneaky or something. 🙄

My favorite music is all the classic rock legends like the Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, and Floyd. But I also love the Bee Gees, both the early Beatle-esque stuff and the Disco hits. I often hang out with my younger brother and my stepmom and listen to the golden old tunes of the 60's and 70's. We love those songs and reminisce about those days and times of yesteryear. Well, one day I played this Bee Gees song and my stepmom, who hadn't heard it since she was a kid (born 1960), burst out crying--the only time she's broken down to music in all the years of our Saturday evening listening parties. I think it's the feeling of nostalgia, beauty, and sadness this song so powerfully conveys that caught you in the feels, Hector. Thank you for reacting to it and for sharing your vulnerability to love and beauty, which you could have kept offline if you had wished to. I think the reaction community lives for those moments when a reactor connects with some piece of art that seems an essence of something magical about humanity.

This was the second album I ever bought: I was in 6th grade and had fallen in love with the Bee Gees. On the first and third verses lead vocal was Robin Gibb, who had one of the most expressive voices in pop music. When this came out, I think he and Maurice were 18 and Barry was 21 - just kids. The good news is that their career covered five decades so you can include them every decade up thru the 2000s, and I hope you do. Since you’ve touched the 70s disco era may I suggest a 70s pre-disco track - Fanny Be Tender With My Love. And for the 80s maybe check out Bodyguard. They had to re-edit the video because it was too sexy for MTV. 🙄 It is less well known then some of their other singles but really shows off their soul/R&B chops. Yes, there were three brothers. For a couple years in the 60s they had a regular drummer and lead guitarist, who didn’t write or sing, and for some reason the drummer is included on the far right in that picture. I love your reactions and your honesty.

I remember hearing this when I was a child, but never took any notice of the lyrics until now. Seeing in the comments it’s about a man about to be executed makes it hit. You definitely picked up the emotions 🫶

They're great for Barry singing lead and backups of Mo and Robin, but songs that show off the other two brother's voices would be really great for him to hear, such as Nights on Broadway, Fanny Be Tender With My Love (especially that one!) and Lonely Days, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, and so many more.

Robin has the lead here. His voice has a longing warble like no other. Three BeeGees, but in the early years they had a drummer and a guitarist as part of the group as well. However the Brothers Gibb, (Bee Gees), were always the core.
@lauraallen55
@lauraallen55 8 ай бұрын
That 'warble' is a naturally narrow and fast vibrato that is near impossible to do if one isn't born with it. Gorgeous voice.

Just to be fair, this is a shared lead. First verse Robin, second Barry and last Robin again.
@kthor

Yep, a shared lead & I often don't care for his quivering quavery voice....way too much wobble going on & cannot understand his diction.
@beegeesbuster1

@@kthor I really do not agree. Robin has been said by many that possibly had the best white soul voice ever. This is of course subjective but I tend to agree with that statement. Because of his voice The Bee Gees were very succesful in the 60's. Barry himself has said that they of course were exploiting the succes Robin's voice gave them in this timeperiode. When you hear later songs like Love Me or Rings Around The Moon you really can hear the vulnerability in his voice.
@lauraallen55
@lauraallen55 8 ай бұрын
The quivering quavery vocal is a type of vibrato that is very hard to achieve, but I'm sure you are already aware of that ;) Odd you can't understand his enunciation. I've never had a problem understanding him despite being from a different part of the world. Vive la différence .@@kthor

Sorry, Hector, but that song's potential to make you break down doesn't go away... It's been over half a century, and it still has that same effect on me! Not sure about the album photo, but yeah, there were 4 "brothers Gibb", but only 3 were known as The BeeGees... (to my knowledge, anyway). The youngest, Andy, had a solo career in the '70s. He died young in a crash, I think. The other three went on to write over a THOUSAND songs for themselves and others... I was not a fan of their Disco era, but I can appreciate how brilliant they were! Truly legendary artists!
