I own a v tail. Pretty sport on other then hanger, which of course changes depending on where you are from. The v tail creates a shimmy if you do not have the luxury of a yaw dampner. Overhaul cost is higher then what he said here. 30 k is the absolute lowest you would pay, Howe you will definitely get more then 1700 hours out of the engine

Thanks for commenting. I dont speak the clearest all the time. I quoted 50k for overhaul. Hopefully that's more on par with what you experience

My dad flew us across the country in a V tail Bonanza back in the late 1960s . Over Iowa the fuel pump suddenly went out and my dad started his crosscheck combined with using the manual fuel pump lever to keep the sputtering engine running. he spotted a dirt runway in some corn fields and then started manually pumping down the landing gear because the rpms were too low to run the gear motor. he made a smooth landing and before we stopped moving the woman who owned the field was rolling up in her pickup. We stayed in a motel nearby and a mechanic came out and replaced the fuel pump which allowed up to take off the next day and finish our flight. my parents stayed cool during the entire episode but for the rest of her life my mom would always give us a knowing look when she saw a Bonanza flying overhead

@smark1180
@smark1180 9 ай бұрын
False. The Bonanza gear is electrically powered. The RPM would not be too slow to power it. Furthermore, the manual extension is performed by cranking it down, not pumping it down.

I have owned a 1962 V-tail for 14 years. Your numbers are about right. The airframe is solid and over built so it almost never needs work. All your repair money is the engine, components and gear and flap motors. My insurance is $1500/yr, annual $4000 and about $2-3,000/yr for various parts. I fly about 💯 hrs /yr

FOR COMPAIRISON: I have an A35 V-tail. These came before the tail fall off issue and are exempt from the AD. I have a 1000 lbs useful load, 750 NM range, and the engine has been upgraded to the E-225-8 225HP engine. My hangar is under $1200 a year because of my location, but my insurance is almost $3000 because of not having a lot of time in complex aircraft. I purchased the plane out of annual for 30k and spent 5k on the annual including repairs and upgrades. I cruise at 145kts on 11gph so my cost of ownership is less than a 182 for a more comfortable airplane.

V tails were made from 1947 to 1982. Over 10,000 were made. Within the family there are many variations and costs. Older models can be gotten pretty cheap but lack of parts availability can hamper ownership. My favorites start with the K35 and later. My absolute favorite is the 1966 V35, lighter than later ones but with the good powerplant/prop combo. S35s are also worth mentioning. Nothing else flies like a V tail, no matter which model.

I would not recommend the Tomahawk. Having flown in that aircraft a lot it is a scary little plane. You get into a stall and the tail starts yo shake like it is going to rip off. Haha that’s why it earned the nickname the TraumaHawk. Another thing I hated was the seat latching system. You use a pin between your legs to set the seat distance from the yoke. I was landing out in a small airport in Texas and my seat came unlatched and I almost pulled the nose straight up when I slide back with the yoke in my hands. Look into a Cessna 150 if you are stuck on 2 seaters or even better if you can budget it a DA-20 I flew the hell out of those in pilot training and they are practically gliders with engines. Great little two seaters with an excellent safety record

The 35 and 36 are heavy planes with big motors , either one you better have deep pockets . When itr comesw time for annual or a motor overhaul you could dump a 100 grand . They are good planes and GA birds go but there is no such thing as cheap in General Aviation and about third of that is rip off .

Bonanza had a maiden flight in 1945 and entered production in May of 1947. AN 2 only had its maiden flight in August of 47. They continued modifying it until 1948 when production began. Certainly it’s close, but Bonanza has been in production longer.
