A shorter update this week. I’ve been busy landscaping the hillside and embankment to point where I think it’s nearly there.
The only quandary I have is the tunnel entrance - I’m not sure if it looks ok as it is or if it needs more work make it look realistic. I’ve a couple of thoughts around it which I’ve shared in the video but would love your feedback and thoughts around this tunnel portal - I’m desperate to put this area to bed and move on!!
The plastic trees I bought are starting to grow on me now, I think painting them and adding my own scatter has definitely toned them down.
I’m off to research Goods Yards now - wish me look!!
Thanks for watching.

Nice looking layout. I reckon extending the rock wall a bit past the tunnel portal would be the way to go. You could also consider removing the portal completely and just have natural rock tunnel portal.

Thanks. I never thought of a natural rock portal 👍

Every option looks better than what it is now. I would do option #2, and chop the top of the left side of the portal down to match the right side. However, removing the brick portal and making a stone cutting all around might be the best option.

The other week, when you started putting the rockface next to the double track I was thinking no, that just won't look right. Now it's in place, painted and blended in it looks fantastic, I especially like the strata. As for the tunnel mouth, I thought the small cap looked best, the slightly longer one could have existed but railway companies wouldn't leave a great long thin line of rock.

Looks great. I'd go with something between the medium and longest extension to the rocks. I would have thought that is the most realistic option as it will help link the higher and lower areas.

for me I'd extend the cutting a bit more as you mention, but I'd paint the tunnel entrance engineer's brick blue and weather it. The reason it looks odd is that the colours clash. Once you've got your weathering and shrubs in you'll like the effect. Great modelling

Hi. The rock cutting looks great, but short, I'm in the camp of the longer rock cutting without overdoing it. May be similar to the rock face on the righthand side of the tunnel. As for your current back scene, it looks fine to me. The timber back scene should be at the same height as the rest, but use foam board. If the edge of the layout is say 50mm cut a strip of wood 25mm as the same thickness as the foam board. Glue this to the bottom edge of the side of the layout and now a 50mm strip of timber covering up the 25mm edge. You have now created a grove for the foam board to sit in for photography and removable to work the layout.

I think you'll hate this suggestion (and I think you mentioned it in the last video) but maybe three tracks into the tunnels and two tracks out? I appreciate it would mean hiding a lot of the gorgeous rock face you've modelled, but that would make the perfect inner tunnel wall. Just slap an off cut of foam over the top, paint it green, and look at it for a couple of days to get a feel of how good/bad of an idea it is. 😊

Hi Andy, I think you also have to consider the history to come up with an answer. If the single line was there first, there is every possibility that a cutting would have existed into the tunnel and therefore a central wall is realistic. When the double line was built later, I guess that the central wall could have been left in place. I'm no civil engineer but seems logical to me. I have a similar set up on Amberlea, with effectively two double-line cuttings and a central wall heading into two portals. Great work by the way. Chris

Hi Grandad, I think the tunnel face needs to be more symmetrical and then add a brick buttress. I don’t think realistically they would have spent the time or had the skill set on hand to shape the rock into anything. Otherwise the layout is looking pretty impressive. I like the fact that you video your mistakes, it shows some of us novices the pitfalls of rushing. Great set of videos. Cheers Paul C

Looking good however agree you need to do something with the tunnel portal as a right angle doesn’t look natural. I would develop your last option but make more of a “mound” that fills the space and tapers wide and to flat rather than more rock-face which I doubt would be left. I would also start with some rock but make it scenically more like the slope on the other side the tracks so it looks more like a continuation of the hill. Also start the slope from the tunnel portal about 2/3rds height not the top so it is less of a “cliff.”

Don't add one of those barrier things - certainly not full height. Ask "what would the railway company have left, after blasting the tunnel?" They could not have left much. Certainly not an unstable rock wall, 20 feet high, 4 feet wide. Beautiful work, by the way - but I hope you knew that already!

What's missing on the portal is a pillar or use that short-rounded bit of shaped rock. Grass to the tunnel from the current grass area. Have a small working man's hut between the tracks with its own jigger on a piece of track. You can buy a Wickham trolley from Bachmann and park it on the grass-covered track between the main and branch lines. A small group of 4 men could lift the Trolley from the sideline to the network tracks in minutes. Tea breaks could then be had in the shed before going back to work in the tunnel or main line. The static grass is fine but the other stuff you do does just as well. Good work as always keep thinking it through and you will come up with something great.

Thanks for the video. I’d go for a minimalist approach. I’d guess that the tunnel approach would have been dynamited out and would not have left much ‘extension’ on the left hand side. Repaint the portal grey and plant lots of trees on the approach.

Hi Andy, I agree with parts of previous comments Grey rock portal then trim the left hand edge to match right. Fill the enlarged space with your rock strip and blend in OR Sink modified rock portal onto hillside, then the cut edge of the new strip of rock will be easier to blend in. Quite like the workman's hut Idea. 😊 Brian

The "whole hog" would be too much and put you back to square one. The smaller solutions look too "contrived" perhaps so my head says go somewhere in between. When we build layout we tend to come up with a track plan then adapt scenery around the tracks. The visually clever modellers seem to think as geologists first as if they were building the tracks into nature. Which came first, the geology or the permanent way ? I still havent the skill to do this!

The left side of the tunnel doesn’t look right. Building a wall or having a natural wall of stone etc would not look right either. I think what I would do is cover the left corner (top to bottom) with vegetation plus more on the top edge of the tunnel entrance.

Its starting to look real nice but the upper hill needs a few more trees. It visually reads as a park and not a heavy wooded forest. And the tunnel portal needs a color change. You should see if you can get them to a darker tan color. The brightness of the red pulls your eyes to that spot. After the color adjustment a combination of the rock pillar and some foliage tree/bush and some kind of hanging vine..

Hello my friend. Thank you, again, for your insight. Sometimes I miss what is obvious - the tunnel portal colour is so wrong!! When I look at the video the hillside does look very sparse - I’ll get painting some more trees up! Already been in the garden and picked up some small twigs to dry out to use. I’ve still not attempted making vines/ creepers!! Cheers, Andy
