This is great and I will be trying! Just an FYI- essential oils will go rancid, just like other oils. A few years may be too long to use the same bottle. Will help with efficacy to have non-rancid oil. With thyme (and EO’s in general) being under-researched for mite treatment, the effective properties of it may or may not change with time. I would do a search for how long before thyme EO goes rancid. Replace every few months, or when it gets a funny smell.

Any updates on progress? Can this be done in November?
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response, If you have warm whether you can do this in November. It's better to do this during very hot days, it is more effective that way. The weak hive was fighting it and did very well, but unfortunately, it got robbed. It may have been my fault I accidentally spilled some sugar syrup around it and that may have attracted other bees to the hive. But they were holding up very well up until that moment. The other two hives did great withe thyme oil!

you really need to show us graphs and charts of your Varroa Activity during and after treatments. As well as your control hives in the same yard that did NOT receive the treatments. With Ether Roll or Alcohol washes. Drop counts dont show us true infestation level comparisons to the brood nest. People need to see if you are keeping your bees mite free or low levels all season.

Hi from GREECE. I'm an agronomist and I'd like to give you some tips. Never approach the colony wearing dark clothes. Thymol is not so active. In Europe and Greece we use amitraz. If the honey we want to produce is organic, then I recommend the dihydrate oxalic acid. Well done Anna.

I used to check my hives in just regular clothes (never anything dark or black, never anything sleeveless or a tank top), and always a veil. I took a few stings here and there but, one afternoon, just watering some flowers about 25 feet from my hives, I got stung on the back of my hand. After a lifetime of nothing more than mild localized reactions to stings I was, within 5 minutes, experiencing a full-on anaphylactic reaction to that sting. I immediately called an ambulancel, took 50mg of Benadryl and spent the rest of the day in the ER (at the hospital where I am employed as an RN...how humiliating! LOL!) The next day, after I picked up my epi-pen prescription, I went to my local apiary supply and bought a full suit. I wear double nitrile gloves to protect my hands and still have had some mild stings (stingers that didn't fully penetrate my skin and stuck in the glove instead of me). I tell this precautionary tale as a way of encouraging people to feel no shame in taking these measures. One can go for years and not have any problems (like me) but, after prolonged, repeated exposure, can develop an allergy that could be life threatening. I saw this video a couple of years ago and am now going to give it a try. I am glad to see an interest in chemical free beekeeping growing! I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to more!

hi ya, nice tips, i like the occasional caging of the queen system!! just a few possibilities why you are always getting stung. Bees hate black, very much like predators so they defend the hive. Good Video, Bottom Board observation cannot determine the varroa mites infestation. You can find the level of infestation by Alcohol wash which is standard practice for varroa mites infestation in the hive. That will be interested to see if Thymol and Coconut oil work or not and if it work to what extend? Your hives are infested with " Parasitic Mite Syndrome ". Check capping cells and Quanine crystals.

anna i see you run away a lot and every time you had on dark color clothing also electronic equipment triggers the bees too so double wammy. when you video bees instead of leaning down to get a closer look just use the zoom on the camera. yes it will take a bit longer but you wont get stung either and wear white or bright color so the bees dont see you as a bear or some other predator coming to get their honey thus triggering their defense mode if you will. i love your videos and have watched them all many times. your father is an incredible wealth of knowledge and i can tell you are paying close attention to what he has to teach. thanks so much for making them and sharing your father. the stings are so totally worth it.

@@AnnaKra hi Anna. just a suggestion. the hive that got robbed. i've seen lots of videos on you tube showing what it looks like when a hive is getting robbed but' for the life of me' i can't recall ever seeing anyone video the very end of the whole thing. having never seen this it is a very fascinating moment seeing the conclusion of this epic battle (which is on par with outright war). what happens to the hive after all is said and done? what are the losses? having been an already small and thus weaker hive is this hive doomed to die out in winter? (i know you would not let that happen) perhaps could you show the conclusion of the robbing. the moment when it is all done. not the next day after the bees, if any are left, have cleaned up and started to rebuild. which begs another question. what happens to the queen? do they kill her during the robbing? or do the bees just want the honey? sorry for so many questions. like i said its fascinating. thanks :)
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
@@kiaya007 Well, other hives are trying to rob this hive because it's weakened. But there are different stages. This hive is doing an outstanding job of protecting itself. In severe cases yes they can kill the queen. Not to worry, hives try to rob each other all the time, doesn't mean they will succeed. In this case, the hive is still doing well at protecting itself. Have you seen our two other videos on getting robbed? In those videos, the robbing is in advanced stages. Please check them out on our channel. Thanks for watching!

Hey Anna, Let me know, what do you think? Do you think your mite treatment was succuessful because of tyhme oil, or broodless period? As I understand, the hives which you did not cage the queen, affected by varroa much more. That tells me, thyme oil did not make a successful treatment, just a little varroa dropped. The main treatment was broodless period, that broke the brood period of varroa.

Do you know anything about using the herb thyme to control mites? I'm wondering if someone could put a handful of fresh thyme in a feeder frame atop a hive and let the bees remove it, taking bits through the hive, doing the same thing they'd do with paper soaked with this oil mixture.

I'm sure you can buy an aromatherapy distiller for $300 and extract the essential oils from fresh herbs. I have never tried using fresh thyme but would be interesting to experiment with. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Thanks, Ana, for another instructive video. Love seeing you, but I miss Pavel too! :) And, by Gosh, why don't you use a veil? I know it's funny seeing you running around, but it would be much painless the other way! :)

Anna, did you do alcohol wash before and after treatment? It gives you the right idea is treatment working or not. A little bit of mites can drop by anything, iven by smocker. Then clime back on a bees.. Do the alcohol wash check!

I noticed you have three holes in one hive and a regular partially blocked entrance on another. Do you or your Father have a preference which entrance works best?
@AnnaKra
@AnnaKra 4 жыл бұрын
We like the circular holes, because bees in nature have circular entrances and the bees protect the hive better. The reason for the extra hole on the bottom we just installed screen bottom boards and they come with a hole. We decided to leave it open for now, but can be easily closed for winter. I hope this helps! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!

First year beekeeper, for mites I'm experimenting with essential oils. I've read a lot about them, for bees, and I have a lot of experience with them for myself and others. I used a mixture of thyme and Wintergreen oils. Had a whole bunch of mites drop in the first two days, haven't checked for a while but it's still in there.

@@scotcompston Hi Steven could you please tell me how much wintergreen oil you used. Have heard that SHB don't like the smell of wintergreen oil so I soaked a square of thick cardboard in it. 1ml to 16 ml of neutral oil. We don't have mites in Australia, well not here in Sydney yet but we are trying very hard to eradicate them from the Newcastle area where we have had an incursion. Thanks Francine.

This is very inertesting. I have one hive that seems to produce a ton of mites while the othe three only seem to have a few. I have treated the infested hive with maqs and that kills hundreds but I cant use maqs all the time. I am going to give this a try and see if I can get this hive under control.

David Mathews II unfortunately that hive died. They ended up with deformed wing virus and most likely other diseases and just suddenly failed. I don’t think there could have been anything I could do at that point that would have saved them.
