Great video as always. Your videos have the information organized and edited quite well. One point: never mind people that can’t watch a “long” video. If they can’t figure out how to start watching, stop watching, and then start watching again on another day . . . well they shouldn’t bee Beekeeping.

Thanks for another great video! I installed my first package this morning! Everything went as smoothly as possible considering it was my first time, and 20 mph wind 🙄 Our TX panhandle winds have been absolutely incessant! My queen looked well and healthy, and by the time I had everything wrapped up and gathered up, nearly all of the bees that initially flew around, or landed on the ground were in the hive and everything seemed well! If not for you, and your videos, there were a few moments I probably would have panicked.

Hi there. That's standard with the Canon. It actually used to be 15 minutes. The sensor overheats so it has that auto shutoff feature. They were not created to shoot long form video. I'm new to beekeeping. I'm from the island Barbados and I do enjoy your videos. The length is perfect. Nothing worse than finding a channel with content you really enjoy and just when you're settling intot the video and enjoying it, it comes to an end, lol. So, I LOVE your long videos, because the content is worth watching, and your gentle nature and personality shin through which add to making your channel a pleasure to watch. :o) P.S. I like the idea of the insulated top panel. I live in a ‘Goldilocks’ valley for farming and everything thrives like magic (I suspect Hobbits helping with the small chores at night while I sleep). But we do get >=10F days for a week or so in January every year and twice per year we get 70-108mph sustained winds for a day or two. So far the bees, hives well anchored to the platforms, do just fine because I found a small grotto on my property near a stream that is below the wind flow mostly. But I can see a benefit to those insulation panels if I can make some kind of ‘locking pin’ to keep it from blowing off the top of the boxes. Thanks for another great idea! I developed a sting allergy after a giant wasp attack on our farm so I do have to keep the full suit on…plus I’m a bit of a girl when it comes to getting stung….

Great job and very strong group of girls. Here in middle Wisconsin my brood is just getting going. New 3# package and she must have started laying the first day out of the cage. Installed on the 19th of April and checked yesterday the 29th and lots of capped brood and larvae as well. Eyes are a bit old so hard to see eggs. The hive that survived winter is up and going well too. Excited for a new year 😎

PS: there are goggle panels made of optical plastic for motorcycle goggles, ski goggles etc. they are separate so they could be glued into a hood screen… that would work perfectly for a prescription vision panel in your hood. They run about $250 and up to $1500 (in the boutique shops). But if it is affordable to you it could work well.

Great video David! two questions. First, I saw you removed some of the comb in the upper box , but not all. Why not? Second, given that the hive was so strong, were you surprised you didn't see any swarm cells?
@beek
@beek 2 жыл бұрын
Not really surprised I didn't see swarm cells. That's more likely in another week or two since we've had a cold spring. I was more glad than surprised. I removed that one strip of comb because it was tall and in the wall of the queen excluder setting down onto the frames.

I split my 2 hives on the 4th and caught a swarm a few days later. I checked the hives yesterday to make sure they all had queens. I found 4 out of 5 queens. The hive that I didn't find a queen in had eggs and larva so I feel good about my progress. All the hives seem to be thriving with atleast 5 drawn out frames each so I added another deep to them except for the swarm hive. With that said, I found a swarm cell in 2 of the hives and was wondering if I could split them again using a frame or 2 from all 4 hives to make 2 more hives totalling 7 all together? OR should I just destroy the swarm cells? My goal is to increase numbers this year and maybe get into honey next year. I would hate to miss an opportunity to increase numbers right now. Thanks for any advice. Keep up the good work!

David - I heard u say at the beginning of this video that you do Not use a Queen excluder. I’m going into my 3rd Summer of bee keeping. I have two hives. I did my first inspection the other day & all looked good. The girls were bringing in a Lot of orange & yellow pollen. I put on my Queen excluder, added a honey super, & added some thawed drawn frames that I had kept in my freezer - along with new frames. The last two days I’ve gone to the hive & the girls r no longer bringing in pollen - At All!! I sat by the hives three different times on an 80 degree day & Nothing!! I’m also smelling honey coming from the hives - which I’ve never smelled before - hoping that’s just from the freezer comb I put in. Any suggestions? I did hang a couple of swarm buckets in case that was what was beginning to happen. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Thankful for any advise.

I'm fine with being stung on the hands, arms, or legs, but my face not so much 😅 Also, do you scrape the burr comb off or do you leave it? And how long is too long to inspect a hive? Like should I be really quick? Or is it ok to take my time?
@beek
@beek 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. As I mentioned in the video, I'm watching the temperament of the bees with each frame. If it deteriorates, I may stop and start to close up. If they are being nice and continuing to work at foraging as I inspect I will continue. That one was opened nearly 45 min. but that's because when I video an inspection, I waste alot of time changing camera settings etc.

Is it because I got in their hives the day before you think and made them mad after stirring them up? 🤣 or maybe being stung after smashing a bee?
