Barkha Dutt speaks Film Writer - Lyricist - Poet, Javed Akhtar in the 47th episode of our podcast, 'Inside Out'. Javed Akhtar is an Indian screenwriter, lyricist, and poet. Known for his work in Hindi cinema, he has won five National Film Awards and received the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2007, two of India's highest civilian honors. Akhtar gained recognition as part of the duo Salim-Javed, and achieved breakthrough success as a screenwriter with 1973's Zanjeer. He went on to write the films Deewaar and Sholay, both released in 1975. Later, he garnered praise for his work as a lyricist, winning the National Film Award for Best Lyrics five times and the Filmfare Award for Best Lyricist eight times. Notably, Akhtar campaigned for the Communist Party of India (CPI) and their candidate in the 2019 Indian general election and served as a member of parliament in the Rajya Sabha. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored with the Richard Dawkins Award in 2020.

@@elborrador333its not an agenda....other examples that you gave such as homosapien etc are not as relevent in day to day life as religion. People like you who are so obsessed with religious identity makes it almost impossible for a rational atheist like him to shed away his muslim identity. Its a paradox that requires the nuanced understanding of socio cultural aspects of the society. For example one can be an atheist but what about the name....a Javed no matter his religious beliefs will always be a muslim no matter he follws the tenets of the religion or not.

@@elborrador333 There is no agenda. Religion unfortunately is like Caste, you can't ever get rid of it until you convert to another religion. Even if you don't believe in caste, it remains with you. He said that in a certain context and to explain his this very point. Please broaden your thinking. It is sad that people find issues even with the most liberal and rationals of muslims (or in this case an atheist).

The Secularism Of Javed Akhtar : The story related to the film Deewar written by Javed Akhtar is familiar. The hero of the film is a Hindu, an atheist who hates the Hindu religion so much that he doesn't set foot on even the stairs of the temple. He doesn't even touch God's prasad. But the same atheist Hindu hero, has an Islamic religious symbol, the number 786 billa on his arm which he deeply believes in! It's the same billa saves his life when a bullet hits him.

Manjunath.. sorry to offer a comment. Hope you don’t mind. Just a small input. If you notice the Vijay character played by Amitabh doesn’t know the significance of the no 786. He is oblivious till Rahim Chacha, head porter played by the late Yunus Pervez explains to him its relevance for the Muslims. Vinay hears it and takes notice. He is neither enamoured or unfazed. He simply registers it. It is a sheer coincidence it protects him from a bullet attack. And he appears to be one sentimental to it and then in the end trying g to retrieve it, gets killed. It is all writing for a movie to cater to different segments of the audience like politicians do. Javed is Muslim and he has no affinity to his religion of birth or any religion. It is alright. How does it matter. By beating the chest as a ram bhakt or Allah ke bhande, the world doesnt change. It is also the greatness of one’s action which is transformational and useful to mankind is what matters.

@@Sanjhi_Mitti Off course, we will focus on his identity because he use this misnomer term as credibility and it important to focus because the interviewer also felt it is important to put in the start of video as highlight point. The term "Athiest Muslim" is a misnomer and typical Al-Taquiya (deception) to fool people. Give me one reference of verse from Quran, Tafasir (commentary) by Islamic scholar gaints or from any Haddith (whether Sahih, Hasan or Zaif) or from the Sira (Biography) of Muhammad. He won't be able to produce one because there is none mentioned a concept of "Atheist Muslim" in any fiqh(jurisprudence) of Islam - Sunni (Hanafi, Hanabali, Malaiki, Shafi) or Shia (Seveners, Tewelvers, Jafferi etc)

I suppose you can be a cultural Muslim, maintaining social relations with believing family and friends, celebrate festivals, etc. But this may be a privilege available only to celebrities like Javed Akhter because of his status. Akhtar is not an atheist. He, Shabana, his son daughter etc who claim to be atheist continue to falsely equate Islam and Hinduism. My dear, it is very common even in Pakistan that you will find one or two persons in every second Muslim family in Pakistan either atheist or agnostic. Don't get influenced by Pak media and its state narrative. And that there no concept of 'Taqia' among any Muslim but may be in Mullas. This term I first heard in the Indian media as a counter argument. Being an atheist doesn't mean you boycott the local traditions, celebrations and ceremonies.

Atheists born in Christianity often name their son John or daughter Anna, even if these are biblical names. Atheists born in Hinduism could name their children Indira (like Nehru did) or Sandip (like Satyajit Ray did). So Javed saab could be atheist and still give islamic names.

I will never expect Barkha to ask hard questions to people from the old ecosystem. But this man is wrong on language issues. 1) How did Urdu become the language of the Islamic nation if the language belonged to Land? No region in Pakistan had Urdu as its native language. 2) There are Maharashtra government-funded 1000s of Urdu schools. Why Maharashtra government is funding Urdu schools and not Oriya schools or Bengali schools? There are Kannada government-funded 1000s of Urdu schools. Why Kannada government is funding Urdu schools and not Oriya schools or Bengali schools? Why are Urdu schools in Maharashtra and Kannada located in areas where Muslims are dominant?

The Secularism Of Javed Akhtar : It is necessary to mention that this Javed Akhtar has been doing several trips to Pakistan for decades in the pretext of Pakistani Mushaira seminars and conferences. But he never spoke a word against the demonic havoc of murder, loot and rape being carried out by Pakistani Muslim goons on Hindu, Sikh, Christian, Parsi or Buddhist families in Pakistan. Such painful situations of non-Muslims in Pakistan had never spilt over any of his stories or ghazals. But this is the same Javed Akhtar who opposed the CAA and was insisting to give India’s citizenship to the Pakistani Muslim goons.

I grew up with intense anti religious spite for all religions beacuse i feel they divide people and make them do things which they will not do otherwise. His actual rsn cud SRV’s take on Bobby Deol character portrayal😉. I felt Barkhaa sincerely provided a vent out to JA on SRV due to her inherent goodness.

Abrahamics took the festival of pagans but hinduism itself was pagan for them. Usually atheists give examples of christmas and kaaba as it originally did not belong to abrahamics but in case of hinduism it didn't make sense because pongal holi bihu etc were always localised. These are getting popular in other regions just because of pop culture not because brahmans are telling others to celebrate it.

Barkha ma'am I'm your biggest fan of your journalism at the moment. Its ridiculous that anyone is trolled but I do agree that I haven't liked your journalism earlier. I feel you have become a lot more non partisan and more center leaning. I don't live in India but feel safe to know that journalism is safe in hands of people like you. Please understand there's a huge breed of people like me in India and abroad who Love India and take interest in Indian politics and don't subscribe to the BJP or it's policies yet feel Narendra Modi is a great leader and is the right man for the Job. But people/society recognise him by his name, ie. a muslim name..and he really can't change the views of society that he lives in. I watched the full episode and liked it too👍. Btw, ‘Atheist Muslim’ is an oxymoron. In Javed Akhtar’s own words it is like saying ‘I am slightly pregnant’. Either you can be an Atheist or A Muslim. You cannot be both. I find Javed saab to be quite pretentious, if not hypocrite!! Further, if an Atheist Muslim & Leftist like Javed Akhtar is invited for ‘Inside Out’ show, why not invite an Atheist Hindu & so called ‘Rightwinger’ like Anand Ranganathan?😊
