Not to disrespect the EIHL, but I'd imagine it would look pretty much the same if you were to put the Steelers against an NHL team.

Yes it would. The EIHL has had a few former NHL players on various teams, but they have been lower level journeymen for the most part. Theo Fleury ripped up the EIHL for 74 points and 270 penalty minutes in 34 games while playing for Belfast. Before he played for Belfast, he retired from the NHL, took a year off, played 7 games during a season in the North Peace Hockey League where his production was 2 ppg vs 2.18 in the EIHL. If Fleury can take the best part of two years off and still produce over 2 points a game at the age of 37, there is no way an EIHL team could come close to dealing with any team from the NHL. BTW: Fleury's last NHL season (2002) he managed 1.43 ppg. At this time he was 34 and had been playing at the highest level for many years.

***** NHL players usually play pretty carefully in those practice games, because they can't risk getting injured right before the season starts. But yeah, the fact alone that they agreed to play the game against them proves that they're not entirely rubbish.

***** I remember when the Ducks played a practice game against Helsinki Jokerit when they were still playing in the Finnish league, and it went to OT if I remember correctly. The Ducks won of course, and you could tell that guys like Getzlaf and Perry weren't giving their everything at some points. Back then Selänne still played for the Ducks, and Jokerit is his original club, so that might have had something to do with how that particular game came to be.

It came to my mind when after playing hockey for10or 12 months (I was doing pretty good, no one believed I just started that year) in various friendly groups, I first player with a 30 something guy who was playing in clubs since age 3. It was not one, but multiple different dimensions between our and his play, we could not touch him, if he wanted he could outplay us with only one hand. But he was good in his league also. His tactic to somewhat enjoy this game was that he would not score any goals but let us do it on both teams. :D He could have had a broom and still would handle our asses :|

Each team can have a maximum of 14 imports icing per game, the only way a team would have more imports signed would be for injury cover, but only 14 can be on the game sheet. There is also a requirement that at least 3 of the imports have EU passports. The only teams that really have a decent amount of quality Brits are the ~bigger teams tbh

Very cool video! It really is eye opening playing (as a beer league player) against true professionals. A few weeks ago I was lucky to play in a glorified pickup game with a few Red Wings alumni, and you really can't understand how fast they can make decisions until you're on the ice with them. Great video!

Good video and good on the guys for having fun. Anyone who has played hockey at a decent level (College, CHL, Provincial Junior, Junior B, Canadian university) knows the huge discrepancy between these levels; a good hockey player (anyone who has played at least at these levels) can spot another good hockey player within a few strides of him stepping on the ice.

Sean O I know. Unless one's played at a decent level of hockey one wouldn't even dare to suggest that they are in the same "league." You would be laughed out of the dressing room...it just wouldn't even be thought let alone said out loud. And like I said a decent hockey player can spot a very good hockey player as soon as they step on the ice within a few strides. Literally, a AAA pee wee team would blow these beer-leaguers (these particular English guys...not every beer league team) off the ice.

I would kill to play against the pros in my city, but it would be even harder since it's NHL players on a smaller rink (Winnipeg Jets). Patrick Laine from Finland is tearing it up this season in his rookie year, I can only imagine how easily he could dangle through beer league players here.

This is so awesome. Wish every adult leaguer in every sport had this opportunity. Truly eye opening. My 2 cents. I played D 1 college hockey. Every pre-season we would scrimmage the area pro farm team. Each year we'd go in thinking we had a chance and then get completely smoked. Thing is, and u just can't wrap your head around it, their 4th line was better, much better than our 1st. Pro's. The guys in the vid explained it really well. Really interesting stuff. Another pt, what level were the beer league'rs? My team in Los Angeles is all ex college guys and 3 ex pro's. We'd still get smoked. But it looked like these b dudes barely played in high school. Always great to step out against top players, kool beans.

I love all the Beer League legends on here saying that the EIHL is no better than a Canadian Beer League team... You know who you are. The guy who can't have one conversation without telling someone that if it weren't for that one injury back in AAA Bantam/ Midget or Junior A/ B that they would have gone pro, but now here you are, Kings of their local beer league! They score seven goals a game and drink 8 beers every post game, than come on here and try to convince people online that they are better than pro players. EIHL isn't one of the premier Pro leagues in the world, but it still is a pro league! I know lots of guys who move on to play there. A lot of them are either Major Junior players who didn't get any North American deals, University guys who've graduated and moved on to pro! ECHL guys who leave for multitudes of reasons (playing time, skill, wanting to see the world, money, etc.) The league I don't think takes itself too seriously, in terms of the higher end leagues like the AHL. Sweedish/ Finnish/ Swiss elite leagues, but there are definitely legit players in the EIHL and there are definitely a few teams that are very good. The one problem is that there seems to be a lot of roster turnover ever year for a lot of teams as the EIHL is usually a foot in the door for guys wanting to enter the European ranks and move up in tiers. But Sheffield is a team that has represented the EIHL in the CHL tournament, as well as the Cardiff Devils! So any beer leaguer in here who's posting nonsense about being just as good as these guys are: You're not. You're just as close to being as good as them as you were to your imaginary pro career!

Delaney Gunn I'm down in FL man, and unless you are in Tampa there isnt a huge talent source. I see some dads at the rink who coach their sons, who are actually amazing players, but they won't get any real "looks". Most of them are from Michigan or New York, and they move down here to work for Space X or Lockheed. I dont care if I ever get back to how I was as a teenager....its my excuse to not go to the gym. It's just funny how guys are like "man I played for the Sea Dogs" or something crazy. That's cool dude, now come back down to earth lol.

Beer league guys would lose. A good portion of each of the pro teams in Europe are made up of guys who played at a very high level at some point (ex-AHL, ex-NHL, ex-Swedish Elite etc). It doesn't matter what country your beer league team is from, they will not be able to compete against a team full of ringers.

I don't get why people are even comparing Uk teams to Canadian teams let alone shitting cussing words on uk teams, because naturally in Canada there are going to more skilled teams, its where hockey is played the most thus there being more players who are all at different levels of skill, and most of them are very skilled. And remember that Canada is sooo much bigger than the uk and most people in the uk only care about football and fighting in bars. So the uk teams aren't going to be as good but they are still very good considering not many people in the uk even know what hockey is lol. I understand that some people may look down on uk hockey to make them feel good about there country, but hockey is constantly growing in all countries. so you canadian and american haters have got some worrying to do! #FuckTheHaters

Yes, get them sharpened and make sure you do it regularly. Also, if you've never sharpened them and they were brand new, they likely were extremely dull, and I mean extremely. Always get your new skates sharpened before your first skate otherwise you'll be trying to skate around on a flat piece of steel and you'll fall very easily.

Your supposed to swap goalies to try and help keep it ever. Then you gotta put tape on the back 1/3 of their skates to prevent any fancy moves. Last, give them all flat blade, wooden sticks. Should be slightly closer to even then.

What does non-league team mean in football? I'm thinking with football you're talking about the top league in the country playing people from a lower league. In this example of the hockey game this is the top level team in England playing people who just play for fun maybe once a week. Not really comparable. Like in hockey you could probably take the highest level AHL team and they might be competitive against a lower NHL team. But that completely different from playing a men's league recreation team.
@alexandermilentis2130

LIke in our "beer league" here in Fort Wayne, Indiana it is called the ASHL. There are 5 different levels of playing from A- which is former professional players all the way to E which is players who haven't played before. It would be completely different to have an A-level team play a professional team than to have an E-level team play them. I'm thinking the guys in the video above were probably C-level players who played against a professional team.

How popular is hockey in England? Let's put it this way: I once had to explain to a Brit what a puck was. All he'd seen was women's field hockey. He didn't even know ice hockey was a thing and flat refused to believe me when I told him it was a rough game.

it's not really that popular, quite rare to find a kid that plays hockey.
