This lesson despite all of the mistakes is actually very helpful! The way she explains the Beer's law is just so simple and amazing because it demystifies the whole concept to an earthy dimension.

Hi, I normally like your videos, but this one has a couple of mistakes. 1:02 the light actually travels from the source to the diode array (opposite what you said) 1:26 Absorbance is NOT a percent. A = 0.43 is not absorbing 43% of the light. Instead, absorbance is logarithmically related to % transmittance. A = 2 - log(%T)
@damongeo840
@damongeo840 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, doing the math: T= 10^(-A)= 0.37 (The light that is transmitted) then the rest is 1-0.37= 0.63= 63 %, that is the percentage of the absorbed light.

Literally the first 10 seconds of the video perfectly described what my chemistry teacher couldn't. That's sad, she said only a few sentences.

Transmittance can be indicated as %T but absorbance is not. Absorbance is a log function of T. Absorbance of 0.43 is not 43% absorbance.
@nasyajohan7243
@nasyajohan7243 6 жыл бұрын
isn't it the same? 43% means 43/100 and 43 divide by hundred gives 0.43
@damongeo840
@damongeo840 5 жыл бұрын
@@nasyajohan7243 That is right, but it doesn't mean that 43 % of the light is absorbed - stated at 1:26. Actually, doing the math: T= 10^(-A)= 0.37 (The light that is transmitted) then the rest is 1-0.37= 0.63= 63 %, that is the percentage of the absorbed light.

what is a=ebc than???
@parthanmanisekaran9608
@parthanmanisekaran9608 7 жыл бұрын
well its a=etc where a is the absorbance , e is the molar attenuation constant, t is the thickness or path length of the material sample and c is the concentration of the attenuating species in the material sample
@supersurfergirl1549
@supersurfergirl1549 5 жыл бұрын
As parthan said, A=absorbance; e=molar absorptivity constant (its different for every element); and c=distance the light has traveled (if you're working with a cuvette then c=1cm) I'm still working on how to use it.
@damongeo840
@damongeo840 5 жыл бұрын
It is the same thing: a=ε*l*C C/a=1/(ε*l). ε is a constant and "l" is fixed for a given cell. Therefore 1/(ε*l) is fixed. As long as the Beer's law apply, the ratio for every concentration and its respective absorption is fixed and equals 1/(ε*l). She presents it straightforwardly.

Absorption 0.43 does not mean the solution absorbs 43% of the light. Absorbance is a logarithmic function of transmittance. A= -Log T -> T= 10^-A -> T= 10^-0.43 -> T= 9.57% -> 90.43% of incident light is absorbed.

Technically incorrect. An absorbance of 0.43 does not mean the solution absorbs 43% of the light. I hope this video has not negatively impacted too many students who accept what you say as the truth. Take this video off the web. Fix it and re-post because there are many good aspects to it.
