The California Beekeeper

The California Beekeeper

Күн бұрын

Commercial Beekeeper and Queen Breeder, Jose Uribe, heads out to the bee yard in Butte County to place cells into our mini styrofoam mating nucs. Although this video was shot back in July we are still breeding through September.
As Jose in en route to the yard, he is concerned by some feces that he spots on the side of the road. Thinking it is possibly bear poop, he stops to inspect it closer. Upon inspection, he finds the teeth of an animal in the poop. As we later found it, it luckily was likely coyote poop, and not from a bear.
Upon arrival at the mating yard, Jose begins to plug cells into the mini mating nucs and comes across one that has been eaten out by small ants. This has been an ongoing issue this whole season and why we switched to this yard from another location to begin with. It seems we cannot escape the ants unless we are out in the open- away from the oak trees- but unfortunately the nucs are not doing well at all in the direct sun either.
If you placed a queen order with us this year… thank you! We are passionate about what we do and are planning on making a big difference in the industry.
If you are new to our channel, welcome! We are a small family owned and operated commercial apiary located in Northern California. We've been commercial beekeeping for the past 12 years, but branched off and opened Uribe Honey Bees in January of 2019, and launched our KZfaq channel in April of 2020. We specialize in queen breeding, pollination services, hive management and brokering.
Thank you for watching and supporting us! We love you guys!

Thanks Brian! luckily we believe it’s a coyote but without a game cam we can only assume based on our county biologist thoughts on the droppings and he knows the area very well. Yes! it’s beautiful out here. In the spring it looks amazing

IDK....pretty gutsy just leaving them laying around in the open like that. Especially with all the bear problems. For the ants I use the borax syrup. I haven't seen the bees go for it, but the ants are johnny all over it. Wondering what you are doing for water for the bees?
@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper
@TheCaliforniaBeekeeper 3 жыл бұрын
Our County biologist said those were coyote droppings and that it’s unlikely the bears come this way. Still anything is possible. I will definitely need to try that borax method! You are the second person suggesting that. Thanks for sharing Kurt. We have a big tank at this yard that is filled up here. It serves for drinking water for the peacocks but you know bees. There is also big ponds near by. Thanks for watching

I had a problem with ants in Australia too. I discovered if you mix 1 drop of frontline for dogs with 100 grams of honey and drizzle it near the hives the ants are gone very quickly. Hope this can be helpful.

borax, mix with honey and put in a bee tight box (e.g. old nuc with screen at entrance). Else the bees will go for the honey too. But just poisoning wildlife is shit. Use wood equipment and put coppertox in the praffine tank, will keep them from nesting in your equipment.

@@kaistumer198 To whom it may concern. I have used many different products to control ants here in Australia and most dont work including borax. I am a commercial beekeeper (30 years experience) and a farmer whose land is bordering world heritage land and very restricted on what chemicals I can and cant use. The active ingredient in frontline is fipronil .03% and one drop mixed with 100 grams of honey renders it very weak. It is non toxic to birds and animals as it effects the nervous system of insects. The bees are not interested in it. Without this product I could not keep bees here. My bees are migratory and each year I have to put out this product as the ants have moved back in. I am as environment friendly as possible.

@@peterthomson7773 Australia is Ant country as hell, i still remember the white ants down under. But germany isn’t much different in many spots, just with one difference ants are only here when it is a really wet year. In dry years not so much of a problem. This year i have them nearly in every corner, propably could feed a whole flock of chickens, just with the cocons they put everywhere. Thats also why i think about going from U- to W-Clips. But i still remember the stuff sold in Oz versus Ants, little white bottle, with i think a red cap, single drop and ants where gone in two days. Was sure that used boric acid. Used boric myself a couple times, when they started to overcrowd the equipment store, always worked good, but 0.3 % fibronil isn‘t that much, would just make sure my bees can’t reach it, since they tend to go crazy during a draught and ants are mostly just a problem at the draught tkmes.
