And also an extension of his mind too imo, the way he puts so much feeling and emotion into everything he plays!
@richardvolpe7664Ай бұрын
To elainemeyer: Feeling? Emotion? Don't you see (literally) that this is an actor/pianist who's mastered the art of conveying these two qualities by sheer "employment" of a whole gallery of facial expressions and bodily gestures, the likes of which have never (or almost never) been seen on a concert stage? I should think that, by now, his militant, obsessive determination to be a "smash" with his ever-adoring viewers would be obvious. I mean 'painfully' obvious! Feeling and emotion (and don't forget "passion"), as Horowitz wisely pointed out, should come "from inside, not outside." Good luck in trying to make Lang accept, or even understand, this concept. I don't think he's ready to fall out of love with himself. Give it another ten years?

Honestly what is wrong with people accusing pianists/musicians of being too "showy" and "dramatic"? Music is fundamentally an art form. Whilst all forms of art require technique, they also require expression. The purpose of art is to show.

A good pianist is a good showman.
@Algorox3 жыл бұрын
Nothing's wrong with being visually expressive on the piano. However, there's a point where showmanship becomes tacky and distasteful. Lang Lang is an anomaly amongst pianists when it comes to showmanship. Don't get me wrong, he is a pianist with extraordinary finger facility and passion -- easily one of the most refreshing and impactful pianists of this generation. But I understand why audiences of Lang Lang have polarized opinions. While I enjoy most of his interpretations (including this one), some are admittedly low-grade circus acts when you compare it to what's written in the score and when you see him being visually overdramatic at the wrong times. While I agree with your comment in general, I think you're oversimplifying the point. People don't dislike being visually expressive in general; only when it's overdone to become distasteful.
@yin96473 жыл бұрын
@@Algorox Distasteful is subjective, and I can understand why some would think that way. When things are overdramatic, it can become pretentious, but different people have different standards for what is "pretentious". What I'm trying to say is to just let people enjoy what they enjoy, and to not set a certain boundary for others as to where "tackiness" begins.

Im not his biggest fan, but I kinda feel that he takes beethoven so damn serious, its amazing. Probably my favourite recording of his repertoire. There's something non-negotiable and absolute about a great artist, and that is his/her integrity, quite independent of what you call seriousness, or drama or levity. With integrity, everything else is just incidental. Lang Lang comes first, only then comes the pianist-artist. I haven't seen a more 'honest' artist-performer.
@jnmusic99693 жыл бұрын
@@madogsioux5636 I completely agree. But frankly, everyone goes on and on about the minute details of the performer, yet you should just close your eyes, and if you enjoy what you hear, that’s all there is to it.

This is my favourite piece of music. This is my favourite interpretation, bar none. Lang Lang, for all his showmanship and his ability to entertain people who've never heard a note of classical music, has nailed this. His virtuosity is here merely a tool to realise the drama, to convey the emotions to us, to speak. This might not technically a very hard piece for him to play, but he takes his own playing of it very seriously indeed. 0:10 Theatrics? Of course. But also, Lang Lang seems the kind of person who loves the music so much that he can recall the moment he understood the meaning for the first time. 2:00 What a great texture transition. 3:18 He seems to hush the piano by power of will alone. 7:34 It's a lot of notes and it's spectacular, but it's very knotty. So to draw out the conclusion like this, to make it brilliant and sonorous like this, is epic. 7:54 Bravissimo Mr. Lang Lang!

Yes, and at the close of the coda, he does a vulgar, uncalled-for, sudden speed-up of the descending arpeggios, disregarding the composer's direction, ruining the ending with a cheap, theatrical display designed to impress the audience. Did he succeed? But of COURSE! You think audiences are stupid?
@coolboy10600Ай бұрын
@@richardvolpe7664 he did that on purpose. if you look closely, youʻll see he also slowed at the end. why would he do that on accident? makes no sense at all. maybe he was trying to emphasize those notes?
@richardvolpe7664Ай бұрын
@@coolboy10600 Well of COURSE he sped up 'on purpose,' as you say. If he 'slowed' at the end (the last two chords), it was barely noticeable. In any case, I stick to what I said in a previous comment regarding the vulgarity of it all. The coda is already excitingly fast enough, making his "flooring" it where the descending arpeggios begin completely pointless and, well, stupid. You have to keep in mind that this pianist is irrationally obsessed with the idea of impressing, wowing, and "killing" his audience, no matter what it takes to accomplish this. And by the way, I'm one of many who've "had it" with his trademark, theatrical gesture of triumphant flinging his arms upward with clenched fists. Face it - - he's hopelessly, deliriously in love with himself, almost to the extent that I loathe him.
@coolboy10600Ай бұрын
@@richardvolpe7664 I mean I canʻt disagree with you. He did mess up those descending arpeggios as you mentioned. However, when I meant he slowed down a little on purpose, he diid it on 7:47. But I agree with, and I wonʻt agrue with further. However, you got to admit that this is the best interpretation of this piece anyone has ever seen. If Beethoven still existed today, he wouldʻve just as impressed as I am.

@@richardvolpe7664 His facial expressions are amazing, but itʻs not just that. He plays like he floats and ascends into the sky as a cloud. His moves so vibrantly. So in my opinion, best interpretation ever. Only Beethoven could play it better.

E' un po' teatrale, ma fa parte del suo carattere ed è perdonabile, detto ciò, rimane sempre a mio avviso, il più grande pianista classico attualmente esistente.

Before Lang Lang entered the scene, you had to SUPPOSE that pianists enjoyed themselves. With Lang Lang, at last, you KNOW that he does! I call this the Lang Lang Revolution... Thank you for that, maestro!
@richardvolpe76647 ай бұрын
You're probably right - - all those other pianists (if I had the time, I'd type the names of about 30 of them) were presumably not enjoying themselves at all as they played. If only the LL Revolution had begun, say, 75 years ago. Then, with pianists gradually taking on the Lang "stage persona", we could've had armies of happy, smiling pianists, 'knocking themselves out with unbridled enjoyment as they played through their recitals.

Sr. Lang.

Finally someone brings some real drama to the piano. I never knew what was missing until I heard him play. I have a lot of his recordings to explore but so far he knocked it out of the park 2 out of 2 times for me. (Also Chopin Scherzo 2, we’ll see what else!) Now I see what all the hype is about... Everyone else is just playing the notes, or at best the music. Lang Lang is playing the vivid scenery, the atmosphere, the live action, the pulse-beating human emotions, the inner thoughts and feelings and sensations the music represents, and bringing them all marvelously, magically, to life. We are not listening to a musical performance, we are there, in the midst of the movie of life being filmed around us.

Well said, Lang Lang playing is really underrated by most and accused of too much showmanship, but people tend to forget that personal showmanship was and is a big part of classical music. Otherwise you are just a robot playing a copy of the notes. The Piano is a dead thing, the performer is alive.

This is the time Lang Lang shines. Although his interpretations of various other pieces may be of a showman, he kept his integrity with this one. This interpretation is rather according to score. Great job👏🏼👏🏼
@JerryEboy69Ай бұрын
@@richardvolpe7664 I’m referring to musical integrity. The only dislike I have for this performance are the descending arpeggios, but the rest is perfection. The visible movements are a little much, but not nearly as much as other performances. I can forgive him for that; I don’t mind, as the interpretation was excellent. Also, I used the word “rather.” That means that it was closer to score than not to score. sorry, but you were really nitpicking
