From the Klavierfestival Ruhr in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, Germany:
Daniel Barenboim conducts and performs with Staatskapelle Berlin.
Ludwig van Beethoven - Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major Op. 58
01:15 I. Allegro moderato
20:58 II. Andante con moto
26:12 III. Rondo vivace
Daniel Barenboim - piano and conductor
Staatskapelle Berlin
The Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58 is a work that begins - unprecedentedly - with the solo instrument alone, playing softly and gently ("dolce") and expounding the first subject over five whole bars. Particularly interesting about this theme are its thrice-repeated quavers, which are vaguely reminiscent of the pounding motif associated with fate in the opening movement of the Fifth Symphony. Surviving sketches indicate that the opening themes of these very different works were indeed conceived at more or less the same time. The Fourth Piano Concerto dates from 1805-6, a period that also witnessed the composition of the Violin Concerto and Fourth Symphony. The Fourth Piano Concerto and Fourth Symphony both received their first performances at a concert at the Viennese home of Prince Joseph Franz Maximilian Lobkowitz in March 1807. Once again the composer himself was the soloist. A review of a second performance of the concerto described the work as "a new pianoforte concerto of tremendous difficulty that Beethoven performed astonishingly well at the fastest possible speeds".

Well, I've always loved Daniel Barenboim and his interpretation of Beethoven, but that orchestra is brilliant! I've never heard better. They're so tight!

Mr Barenboim is the most important old-fashioned pianist! The greatest performer, Beethoven! And what else he interprets is his signature! It is a protector that treats the piano as a symphony orchestra!

One of the most sublimely beautiful pieces of music EVER composed int he history of music! This, along with the D Major violin concerto and the beautiful ensemble just before the end of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro! Ahhhhh so beautiful. Beethoven was a genius melody writer.

This piece was originally performed on Dec 22, 1808 along with Symphonies 5&6. It was a benefit concert for Beethoven - he conducted as well as played. The concert was apparently 4 hours long and it was freezing in the concert hall in Vienna. The concert goers certainly got their monies worth!

He didn't really leave Jaqueline. Yes, he had a mistress (Jaqueline didn't know about her), but he stayed married until she died. I would not blame him for that. It may not be the best thing he could have done, still far better than others.

He does not have a good character, and as a husband to the genius cellist Jackeline De Pre, who died so young, and her death was an awful blow to the world of music, he was a sad failure. (He didn't take care of her in her illness, and was unfaithful to her.(.

Daniel Barenboim has such a rich carreer and personal history! I loved to see him conducting the Neuejahrs Konzert back in 2014 (if my memory serves me right) and I've never seen a soloist fusing with the conductor before these piano concerts. Well, what a pleasure it is! I truly admire great musicians!

In the aspect of the soloist playing/conducting, remember that this was the norm in Beethoven's day. The art of conducting a concerto (and turning the piano so that the audience could see the performer's profile) came along in Liszt's day. Felix Mendelssohn being perhaps the prime conductor of his day, years after Beethoven's death. However, this video is pretty much what you would have seen with Beethoven himself doing the honours. I can't imagine a better, true-to-the-score performance of this work than this video. (I've seen everyone from Claudio Arrau to Mitsuko Uchida do this work, and Barenboim's performance is my choice.)

i think it is fantastic: the composition, and the play by both barenboim and the orchestra. An excellent performance. Unlike others I see his conducting as a natural need by barenboim. he knows the orchestra is good, but he tries to get the maximum out of it; and he is excited by doing it. I love to see it: the absolute passion, the mastership!

he is always using quite a bit of force to produce a sound. Conducting takes a lot of energy as well. He does not seem to get tired as he ages. Where is all this energy coming from? Perhaps the music itself is energizing

The Cosmic energies re-creating this Universe: the unspeakable Love that leads Chaos and Time together into a new version of space and matter, and also of our inner divine kernel. Passage 9:10 - 10:40 = one of the higjhest peaks in Western civilization (as for music art, only J. S. Bach reached those sublime dimensions). Regards from Bs. As.

+Daniel Brito A professional, well rehearsed orchestra do not need a conductor/pianist to wave their arms about every time they stop playing - or even just have one hand free! Everything is sorted in rehearsal. I wish Barenboim would focus on playing rather showing how clever he is at multitasking. But I agree, great performance :)
