This is the first time I have heard this lady. She is wonderful. Her interpretation of this Beethoven concerto is superb. I most likely will never have the opportunity to hear her in person, but thank God for KZfaq.

Sonorum Concentus Beethoven, I've watched this video many, many times now. I just can't get enough of it. There are other wonderful performances of Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto on KZfaq, but this one is, in my opinion, the absolute best. Maria Joao Pires - what an artist! Thank you so much for sharing this video with her fans around the world.

I was not expecting a historical piano, but surprise, surprise - Pires may be the best player of a fortepiano I've ever heard, certainly up there with the likes of Levin and Bartmans. She knows how to make the instrument both speak and sing with a wide variety of tones that a modern purpose-built concert instrument can't achieve. The Largo is truly mesmerizing and stands with the finest recorded performances from the likes of Brendel, Richter and Rubinstein. It's through complete simplicity that such a profound statement of grief and awe can come through clearly.

She plays alternate octaves between left and right hand and not how is written in the score. But she’s not the only one playing the last bars in this way

Me causó curiosidad el piano, que definitivamente no es un fortepiano, como los de los tiempos de Beethoven. Es un pianoforte de cola con unas varillas que lo cruzan a lo largo, lo cual no es común en los Steinway o los Bosendorfer o en los Fazioli.

There are Symphonies of Beethoven and Concertos for Piano & orch. of Rachmaninov. Period. (Not vise versa!) . There are both symph. and concertos of Mozart, though ;)

Are all of the instruments period-specific, including the piano? The piano appears to have bass strings that lie straight in the harp, rather than crossed over, as is more common.

Given that it may be better to feel the music if you close your eyes, nevertheless it should be quite impossible to play an entire concert with your eyes closed
