Definitely an interesting Michelangeli op.111 performance, new to me. He makes it real "Maestoso" here, as perhaps it should. His 1964 recording, wonderful too, seems to more focus on technical perfection.

"More than just an interpretation, this is a narration." Yes, this is passion, rage, high anxiety, violent struggle between mind and soul. “Magisterial and powerful playing” BBC Music Magazine, April 2010 ** “Michelangeli's explosive but flawlessly controlled force and energy are frightening in their perfection and I doubt whether a more masterly interpretation exists on record...[his] agility in the last movement of Beethoven's Sonata No.32 has to be heard to be believed.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2010 Read more

TheElenabranick Sorry, but your quote of the Gramophone review is not on point at all as it refers to Chopin's Second Scherzo and Beethoven's sonata Op. 2 no. 3, not Op. 111: "Michelangeli's explosive but flawlessly controlled force and energy are frightening in their perfection and I doubt whether a more masterly Second Scherzo exists on record..." "Michelangeli’s agility in the last two movements of Beethoven’s Sonata No 3 has to be heard to be believed..." But what follows, and you fail to quote, is exactly my point regarding his lack of sensitivity, especially when it comes to music with any depth to it (Beethoven, Mozart): "...though here and in one of Mozart’s most delectable concertos you will need to look elsewhere - to Kempff, Barenboim and Perahia - for warmth and affection. The Mozart in particular can be chilly and unyielding, dressed, as it were, in stiff brocade." So, my point stands.

Neldidellavittoria I do like Richter a great deal, one of my favorites, and I have several recordings of his Op. 111. My personal favorite for this piece is Arrau, followed by Schnabel.

This is recording of a live performance that has some problems. Michelangeli really owns this piece for my taste but this isn't a performance that was worth saving. Try this one instead: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bcWPa8WcmNKcoY0.html

An oldish man plays how he wants and feels, possibly without desire and without spirit. The arietta is for a younger person. Not a question of want of prowess, maybe the contrary: feeling tired and empty, without anything more to learn and to do.

Wow, one interpretation not up to your taste and immediately the performer belongs to a retirement home rather than to a concert hall. Just a tad too harsh?

I don't understand why this man ever earned a reputation as a great pianist aside from his admirable technique. This interpretation exhibits zero sensitivity; the arietta, rather than an ascent to heaven, is a brutal onslaught of literal score reading. He totally butchers it. Awful, simply awful.

idesof you don't understand because you're idiot! What do you mean by sensitivity? Vomiting on the piano? It's so sad, any idiot can give his opinion on the greatest things in the world.

Mireille Jacob Are you feeling better now that you got that out of your system? Michelangeli is way out of his depth here. He would do better to stick to the shallows of French music because in the depths of Beethoven, all he does is drown.

idesof Mireille Jacob Children! Children! Can we not discuss differences of opinion like mature adults rather than crying "idiot!" and "moron!"? Personally, I don't think this interpretation is *that* insensitive (compared with, say, Backhaus), but I prefer Arrau's more romantic take above all others. And Michelangeli's reputation does rest more on technique rather than sensitivity, how he had almost flawless control of all aspects of the sound (I love how he plays the cadenza to Grieg's Piano Concerto); however, it is this perfection that many listeners take issue with. Although here, he seemed to be in his twilight years and losing some of his trademark flawlessness. Also, he was never a literalist and does do some odd things in this sonata, so I wouldn't call it a literal score reading.
@idamahyp

when true music is involved, how can you acept such opinions that show a complete missunderstanding and a total lack of sensibility towards music. So: Idiot and moron till the end of the time!
