NOTES ON TRANSCRIPTIONS AND INTERPRETATION
The transcriptions of Beethoven‘s compositions in a guitar form are not a novelty. All you have to
do is leaf through the works of Ferdinando Carulli, Wenzeslaus Matiegka, Mauro Giuliani,
Francisco Tárrega and many others to come across adaptations of various pages, mainly piano
music, belonging to the famous Viennese composer.
The beating heart of our transcriptions had to be the sound. As the instruments here involved are
both in a way ‘antiques’ the fortepiano (which defined the piano at the time) and the 800’ century
guitar are, and were very different instruments compared to the modern ones and this important
difference brings us to a fundamental conclusion: that the sounds produced by these instruments,
as far as timbre is concerned, are actually very similar. Their similarity is quite clear even to the
untrained ear.
What we are really interested in is exposing the relationship between instrument - evocation -
poetry. Just as Paul Valery used to outline his perfect and definite artistic flare, as the trio handeye-soul (the hand that works, the eye that sees, and the uniqueness of an artists soul), the
guitarist interpreter of music of the Classical period should also be well aware of the trio guitarevocative sound-poets image. That is what it really meant to us. Our transcriptions and
interpretations have been aimed at capturing the poetry, and making music out of it through our
guitars to bear witness to the genius we believe Beethoven was and to express our most intimate
treasures in life.
BIO
Claudio Maccari and Paolo Pugliese are considered the leading specialists of the 19th century
repertoire.
After making their New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1992 they have been invited to give

Academy in London, the Yale University, the Sydney Guitar Society, the Parco della Musica, and
as well in Asia, Africa, Australia, Latin America, US, in duo and as soloists with orchestra.
Classical Guitar wrote: “A listener would have to have cloth ears and a heart of stone not to be
profoundly affected by this superb performance of music”
Their extensive discography includes the complete works of the most important composers of the
era and they were the first artists to record the complete Concertos for guitar and orchestra by
Mauro Giuliani on period instruments.
