Actually Beethoven was just beginning to lose his hearing at the time he wrote this and didn't really hard of hearing until much later. But the imagination needed - even with perfect ears - to create this work is unimaginable.

The idea of not clapping between movements is relatively new. It was not uncommon to not only applaud but to demand an encore of a particularly brilliant movement. This true of Mozart through Mahler symphonies in Europe. As a conductor, of over 40 years experience, I remember when I was young I hated when people applauded between mvmts. Then I reached a conclusion that has stayed with me. It occurred to me that those who were clapping had never gone to a symphonic concert before, did not know the "etiquette" and clapped because they like what they were hearing for the first time. I realized how wonderful that was and ever since I have loved it whenever I conduct,

That's why Beethoven created the Piano-Forte concept. To not let people sleep in the concert after they drunk so much. Nobody was really interested in music until Beethoven. People was a the concert house only cose "social life". Very much like nowdays.

A 'podium' is what one stands on (from Latin "pes, pedis," foot). The conductor is indeed standing on a podium. What he does not use is a lectern, the stand on which a score would be placed, if he used one.

@@johntravena119 Exactly ! And it seems imho, that composing this magnificent symphony , with the royal D-major splendour and the two up-lifting and highly energetic main themes of the enthralling first movement , with the enchanting beauty of the "Larghetto" and its tender melody, with the grim humour of its "Scherzo" and with the sheer vigour, agressive dynamics, sharp contrasts and the rhythmic ecstasy of its final movement, was his way or even his personal cure to overcome his deep depression and desperation with even suicidal thoughts, that had befallen him, when he realized , that his hearing problems were obviously uncurable and would lead to progredient loss of his hearing until clinic deafness. So his second symphony is very special in this regard indeed .

The audience weren't so much ill-educated (other proms videos show no such behaviour) as delighted by the entire night. The warmth of feeling directed towards the Barenboim West-East Divan project by a British audience fundamentally supportive of its ethos was unmistakable. Being at the classical end of Beethoven's symphonies not only was clapping historically accurate but also musically appropriate; nothing was lost, only atmosphere was gained. This is a really good symphony, by any standard. It sits well with the 3rd and is a real departure from the 1st. The orchestration is glorious at times. There are colours of the 3rd in this. I think, by this time, he had really learned about the orchestra. At 31 or 32, he was about to deal with the biggest challenge a musician can face, and then move on to greatness.

Cellos in the middle with the 1st violins and 2nd violins on the outer edges is sometimes a preferred setup, depending of course on the repertoire. Music such as this, with prominent cello lines and very distinctive parts between the two violin sections, is advantageous in that it allows the cello sound to come more to the fore when needed and provides a stereo effect with the 1st and 2nd violins separated.

I had to repeat the finale; which seems to me a text-book example of brisk, suave and smooth sailing brava. ‘Ole Ludwig always knew “whereof he affirmed” and with consummate skill and foresight made us believe we actually know our way to the city. Just to think the EROICA was just around the bend and an entirely new and quite bizarre galaxy. With a funeral March like the grandest, soaring cathedral; crystal and sublime. A great symphony and a fantastic colourful performance! I very like the first movement and the ending from 30:41.

I had some free time this morning and decided to revisit a piece I hadn't heard in a long time and out of thin air I picked Beethoven #2. Oh, how I underestimated this piece! It's gorgeous. The textures in the lighter sections are so elegant! It's just brilliant.

Magnificent, incredible, great, otherworldly Bethoven. He reached there which is realistically impossible. Incredibly great mind, created what does not pass away. He identified himself with nature and this whole earthly world and this universe🤩👍💯🎶☀🌩🌦⚡🪐🌈🌌❤

The Prom each year is terrific. The Horn convention this year is in the Imperial College Sherfield Building "Great Hall". Any way to get clips of the horn symposium posted. The event is August 11th-15th this year (2014).

Geniale!!! Questa seonda sinfonia nell'interpretazione di Baremboin traspira la giovinezza...come l'Orchestra che la suona "Allegro con brio". Lo "charme" è qui al diapason!
