2. The whole song is one huge act in order to convince bj that it's absolutely normal to marry an underaged girl But when he marries Lydia, he becomes mortal and that's how they kill him

He actually tries to force Lydia to marry him before the "what I know now" song, 'cause he wants to become human and do stuff he likes (like scaring the hell out of ppl), but he gets suspicious after Lydia agrees to do it willingly (that happens after the "home" song)

Creepy old guy is when Lydia is tricking BJ into thinking that she wants to get married to him. After they’re married she kills him so he will be recently deceased and they can send him to the netherworld.

Here's some context for What I Know Now: Lydia went to the Netherworld to look for her mom (she tricked BJ into making a portal). There, she encounters Miss Argentina, who, immediately after finding out Lydia was alive, encourages her to go back to the living world- which is basically the song! Miss Argentina and others telling her that they'd give anything to go back, so Lydia should go back and live while she has time. The lyrics are essentially a big anti-suicide message, but formatted in a way that you don't really realize it on first listen- and if you do, it doesn't bring you down, because of the way its presented. It's a rad song and I love it, sorry for rambling!!

Please, ramble away! I'm loving to learn about the show so the more information the better! :) It's a funny one to listen to without context, especially when all the dead people start to show up. I didn't think of it as an anti-suicide message but that makes it so much better! Thanks mate!

Alex Brightman, who plays Beetlejuice, has some of the best theater songs I’ve listened to. He has such a sweet and soft voice when he wants to, and it always baffles me that he can also do this to his voice for Beetlejuice. From what I’ve read, he has some extra kind of flaps in his vocal chords that let him do this 8 times a week.

Yes, it's his real voice, but he had major vocal training to be able to put on that gravel in a way that was safe and sustainable! :) Also, yes. Sophia Caruso is absolutely amazing. Dead mom is such a bop.

Sophia is amazing...The entire cast is!!! As much as I want this show to come back to see this live, damn those are gonna be some BIG shoes to fill for whoever takes over if the OBC doesn’t return.

In "What I know now" Lidia travelled to the Netherworld looking for her mother, followed by her father who tried to take her back senses. Well, the singer is a dead woman who is ALSO trying to make Lydia understand the importance of being alive, and so to leave the Netherworld while she can

Ok, so late, but they don’t actually kill of sky, the Girl Scout. She actually runs off in beautiful sound, saying “My heart is stronger then I thought”. I just thought you might want to know since I became so attached to sky and was relieved when I found that out.

I'm not sure if you've been told this yet but Adam and Barbara actually had a baby but it was unfortunately a miscarriage so that song (ready set not yet) is pretty much them trying to figure out if they're mentally ready to try for another baby. But they die at the end of the song. This information was cut out of the musical, along with the song that explains it a bit more, called The Children We Never Had. You can still listen to the song on KZfaq though because they did record it just never used it. That song is them talking about that miscarriage and mentioning alot about how Lydia is like the child they never had.

i love how much you're in love with sophie anne caruso lmoa. It would be nice if you would react to Dear Evan Hansen (a show that should make you probably very emotinal) or Carrie (a pretty interesting story for a musical because it's based on the novel from Stephen King and it's pretty underated.) these two musicals are currently my favorites

About Beetlejuice's voice: no, it is not the actor's actual voice, he had to train a lot to be able to do it. It apparently isn't painful or damaging. He also played in school of rock if you want to hear his actual voice.

Called ventricular phonation, there’s cartilage and folds in front of our vocal opening that we can vibrate to create that gravelly sound without having to strain our vocal chords. Try clearing your throat, holding out that sound, and talking through it. That’s a very simplistic version of what Alex is doing when he sings.

In case your wondering, that is Alex Brightman’s (beetlejuice) actual voice no modifiers. He has ventricular fold phonation that he uses to do the voice

If you really Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice) you should listen to School of Rock. I would also reccomened Come From Away, Hadestown, The Addams Family Musical, Gypsy, and if you want a real stumper, 42nd Street (I'd go with the the recent London production)

Basically in creepy old guys Lydia really regrets saying bjs name three times, the only way to get him back to the netherworld is to kill him, but the only problem. He is only brought to his strongest demon form, so he cannot be killed. The only was to kill him is to bring him back To life, and the only way to do that is to marry him.

Some context for the Creepy old Guy song: Beetlejuice comes up with a plan to become alive again, by marrying Lydia (for some reason?) or as he calls it "It's a green card thing" everyone freaks out and she runs away into the netherworld which is "What I know now" and "Home" and then she comes up with a plan to get rid of Beetlejuice by appearing to give in and marry him. Since then Beetlejuice has become wary and set on straight up murdering everyone instead, so they have to convince him she means it thus, "Creepy old Guy". Also, as someone who only recently got into this musical as well and am regretting all life decisions that didn't lead to me seeing this live: It closed because of Covid, and they had plans to tour next year so, have a little hope.

Alex Brightman also played Dewy Finn in School of Rock the musical. Look it up. That was his natural voice. Beetlejuice is a character voice he was doing

Loved your reactions! This is quickly becoming my new fav soundtrack to listen to all the time 😂 the creepy old guy song got me too at first but it's actually about Lydia tricking him into marrying her to make him come to life, and then she kills him and sends him to the netherworld. The Sandworm comes into play there too, which is a great homage to the film. If you haven't listened to Phantom of the Opera, that's been my favorite for years. Heather's is another one that's pretty good, and just in case you haven't listened to it, Hamilton. Have fun listening, and I look forward to watching your future reactions! 😊

They all deserve more love so they are closer to underrated, but they should still be listened to more: Lizzie We Are The Tigers Starry Freaky Friday Ruthless! Tomorrow Morning Merrily We Roll Along Parade New Brain The Lightning Thief- A Percy Jackson Musical Something Rotten Strange Loop I will likely have more whenever you do more, but this is my suggestion list for now. Hey, glad you enjoyed this one! Fun fact: Alex Brightman (the guy who plays Beetlejuice) also plays the lead in School of Rock the musical. You should totally check that one out! The kids sing and play the instruments live. Absolutely insane the amount of talent they have! Also, Sierra Boggess (stars in The Phantom of the Opera and an absolute legend) is in it too.

if you’re going to do more of these videos, I highly recommend reacting to the Percy Jackson the Lightning Thief musical! it’s so underrated and if you don’t know the plot that well, you might enjoy it a lot more!

Alex Brightman actually has a beautiful classical voice as well which you can hear in songs like 'The Darkening Blue' from the musical Stars of David :)

If you're going to round out your musical knowledge, you're gonna need to listen to Stephen Sondheim. Sweeney Todd or Into the Woods are good places to start.

We had tickets to see Beetlejuice over spring break but then everything shut down because of Covid-19 and the show closed for good. This video makes me so sad we will never get to see it.

You should listen to Beetlejuice the demos the demos the demos album. The original songs sung by the guy who wrote them. Very good album available on Amazon. And if you haven't got it on the list - Waitress (and the album What's not Inside) which is the songs that didn't make it. Brilliant show

i know I'm stupidly late, and you probably know the context now.. but in creepy old guy: Lydia gets found in the netherworld by her dad in which she decides to go back home and comes up with a plan to get rid of BJ for good. Now all BJ wants is to be human/alive again, and to do this he needs to marry a living human; Lydia takes advantage of this and "marries BJ" everyone except him is in on the plan. They get married and BJ is alive, however, Lydia grabs a cane (I think thats what it was) and stabs him, thus killing him so he has to go to the netherworld again. The song is literally her just tricking him into falling for her plan.. hope that helped

That is his voice. He has a medical condition that allows him to use that voice and even sing with it without a problem. ^_^ I love this musical so much.

@@Barbara2.0 Woah I don't know if anyone clarified this yet, but that comment was terribly misleading... 😬 Alex Brightman has a perfectly normal voice and can sing like an angel (if you listen to school of rock at some point you'll hear). BUT he also has the ability to move some flaps around his vocal chords that people usually can't control. This allows him to get his incredibly gravelly Beetlejuice voice on, and because of how he uses this trick, it's perfectly healthy for him to do it and it doesn't mess with his voice. But it's very much a choice, not how he normally speaks. ^^

Did you look up the context of Creepy Old Guys afterwards? I feel like that was a really important part here 😂 If not: they're all playing along so they can lay a trap for Beetlejuice. Stroking his ego in that ridiculously over-the-top way was a trick to get him to let his guard down.

Once you have that context, it is an absolutely brilliant song. Have you seen any of the stage recordings of it? The costumes and choreography are fabulous - including Delia grinding with one of the skeletons for the line "hey hey, it's a wedding!"

It also makes me grateful (for the first time ever) that I always looked younger than my peers as a teenager. That always frustrated me, especially because I was actually more developed than them - I just happened to be very short and baby-faced. I know creepy old guys don't care if a girl is underage, but if they think she's still in the single digits, they normally stay away.
