This is very disappointing. You are going to have people wanting to see the inside because they think they are going to see a piece of history, only to be disappointed. Why did you get a vintage camper only to modernize it? Now it looks like any 2022 camper that you can get off a lot on the inside. The wood was gorgeous and unique. If you had restored it, it would have been worth more in the end. Keeping it original and just fixing the issues it had, would have been the smart way to go.

Gorgeous reno! 😃 Noticed a negative comment below about removing the original interior wood panels. Yes, the warm varnished wood is beautiful; however: 1). They may not understand that this had to be done to reach & repair the rot and leaks. 2). Finding thin pliable replacement stain-grade wood veneer has not been easy or cheap the past two years. If a hobbyist has the time & money to do detailed "original restoration" work ~ wonderful! 👍 But not everyone has that luxury. Or inclination. Value & over-investing in a project matters too ~ the expression, "Trying to make a silk purse from a sow's ear," comes to mind. Regardless, I think you did a marvelous job with this camper :)

Gre88888t video and work. Next time you do this can I recommend you use treated wood to replace the old? I'm weird that way haha. It only costs a little more but gives a lot more peace of mind because most all truck campers leak eventually and using treated wood will preserve it for the next buyer ;). I really like your remodel job...I have just started the same remodel as yours on an old 70's truck camper. I really like your rear door with those louvered window glass...what did you say they call them? Those kinds of rear doors are probably not available any more and if they were it would be very expensive (IMO). My old camper has the same type of windows on the sides and love them old things...they allow you to open the windows when it's raining out. Hope to see a video or two of you out in the woods camping in it, cooking, sitting around the camp fire etc. nice to watch vids like that. I bet your dogs love being out camping...mine do! peace and thumbs up!

Yeah, Lowe's didn't have any 1 by treated lumber. I used treated for the exterior parts though. The windows are Jelousie style. They're nice, but not very insulated.

You are such a talented and hard working young man that I feel bad even asking this...but why not simply buy a newer camper versus removing all that history? These old rigs are just about gone. We've gotten to where we don't restore, we replace. You did a great job so I'm just wondering if it couldn't be saved or if this was your plan from the start.
@StateFun
@StateFun 2 жыл бұрын
The main issue was the wood rot we could see and weren't sure how far it had progressed. We could have replaced the sides and ceiling with the same style panel board, but it still wouldn't be original then. My opinion, the originality was lost when a previous owner put in a mini fridge and faucet, so making the camper much more enjoyable to use made the most sense to me. I wasn't necessarily planning on the remodel originally, but between the need to remove rot and realizing the luxuries I'd want added, the project kept growing until I decided to go all in. Great question by the way!
@JacindaH
@JacindaH 2 жыл бұрын
