The absolutely most horrifying aspect of all these ships are the intact U-boats. You absolutely know they sunk from ruptured ballast tanks. Which means they did not sink like rocks, but drifted down. They also were above crush depth, so they did not implode from depth pressure. That means most, if not all, of the crew were alive when they hit bottom, never to surface again.

@Robert Curtis none of them were nazis. The German navy did not give a danm about the politics. Most of the time they disobeyed direct orders from the nazy party. The navy was pretty much its own sepreate entity and fought for Germany, not the nazis.

There’s something beautiful, sad and haunting about sunken ships, they sit at the body of every ocean or sea, resembling nothing more than worn, shattered pieces of wood and metal, their crew nothing more than a memory, and for us, a piece of history we proudly rediscover in an attempt to learn about what sunk it in the first place, but for now, the ships and their crew will remain in their watery graves

My great grandfather served on the USS Wisconsin and had gotten a plank from the ship as a family heirloom. My uncle has it but my dad had gotten a katana from a Japanese pilot that was captured after crashing in the water. OH YES! I knew it as soon as 1) I saw your title and 2) a very precise and detailed animated re-enactment of the sinking of the Bismarck - By a wild series of circumstances as that massive ship sunk it managed to capsize, drop all its main turrets, sink at about 40 mph while it completely righted itself just in time to hit the bottom without breaking apart BUT was on top of an underwater mountainside, SOOO it was poised bow first down the slide shedding its superstructure UNTIL, by some fluke, it abruptly turned sharply ninety degrees to the slope to instantly come to a firm rest, stable as can be, upright and balanced, with mud cutting her bow like a bowwave, and if vision is obscured, looking as menacing as she does in her worst-looking pictures on the surface - still. This is a wonderful and delightful compilation for maritime aficionados to see these old ships' graves as they exist for real. Marvelous!

1:05 The Edmund Fitzgerald is famous among northern US. Especially those around the Great Lakes as it was the fastest iron ore ship on the lakes until one night a giant wave during a storm on Lake Superior crashed into the Fitzgerald splitting it half killing all on board instantly. The wave crashed so fast that, according to an eye witness account that, one moment the Fitzgerald was there communicating with it via radio and lights flashing. Next moment, she was gone in a blink of an eye. All 28 sailors died aboard the ship. For many many years the local Native American tribes spoke of Lake Superior as being highly dangerous during the Fall season and how unpredictable the great lake was. The Fitzgerald didnt heed this unfortunately along with another ship that was out with it. The other ship survived while the Fitzgerald wasn't so lucky.

HMS Hood eventough it got detonated, even tough it sunk within 3 minutes, it fired it's canon until the last second it was afloat. The Bismarck fought basically the Enitre royal navy: The Nelson, King George V, Ark Royal, Suffolk and Norfolk (fully aware it's not alot but still damn.) Yamato fought of what seemed like endless waves of planes packed with bombs and torpedos from 17 carriers. No matter the size or the nation, these ships are legends for their actions.

I thought the graf Zeppelin was scrapped, but I never knew they sank it. I’ll have to do some digging on that story. Edit: I did my research and they did, in fact scuttle the ship. The soviets raised the ship, and then used it as target practice for them when they realized they didn’t have any other use for it. But in all fairness carriers were not universally recognized by nations until midway, and there forth the soviets didn’t think they needed it.

Has everybody forgotten about the U.S.S Forrestal fire? Apparently so. Well, my grandfather survived the aircraft carrier’s fire, about 140 men died, and also 120 men or something like that lived. My grandfather was an engineer on the ship, he worked on Jets during the Vietnam war.

An Uncle of mine was one of the last Crewmembers onboard, whom sunk her as blockade. He was initially one of the Chief Engineers in the Enginerooms, later Artillery Officer.

Can we talk about the RMS Lusitania? How the British should be tried for war crimes for filling her with military supplies and ammunitions then purposely sending her in a U-boats path, all to drag Americans into the war. Pathetic, i will always dislike the British for that.

Fun fact about the Fitzgerald, the current image used here is actually from 2002, roughly. Before the spar deck collapsed, it was perfectly intact, apart from just 2 hatch covers near the bow. Other than the gigantic fucking split along the midships, it was perfectly intact.

The picture you got of HMS Sussex, pennant number 96. Launched: 22 February 1928 - Decommissioned and scraped 3 January 1950. The previous HMS Sussex was lost in a severe storm on 1 March 1694 off Gibraltar.
