Last winter, this Rose of Sharon was transplanted and pruned pretty heavily, and this video shows the results the following summer. A Rose of Sharon is a hardy plant that can be moved in the winter and also pruned heavily, with a strong chance that it will thrive and respond well in the months ahead.
Backyard Adventures with Andy Wright is a channel devoted to all-thing gardening and yard care, along with random "adventures" that include statue making, patio cooking and smoking, gardening, yard care, and more. Tune-in for some inspiration and instruction on all things home and yard!

The taproot on them is amazing. Kudos on the transplant. I never fertilize mine. Not necessary. Prune mine hard in fall (mostly to get the seed pods off or I'll have 100,000,000 rose of sharons) & again in spring to control size and shape. They love it. :)

Thanks for sharing and my experience has also been that they can handle quite a bit of pruning. I've yet to see a seed take off, but now I am going to watch a little more closely.

@@backyardadventureswithandy I got my plants as seedlings from my parents' house. Theirs are all seedlings of multiple generations, which my mom got from her grandma, who'd gotten hers from her mom. They are prolific seeders. I only know of one sterile variety. Lucky you if yours are less vigorous. I'd be living in a RoS forest by now if I wasn't so militant about cutting off the seed pods before they opened.

Last year my Rose of Sharon buds started turning black. I noticed some weird clear looking bugs and sprayed. But it was too late for the buds. Do you think I should do a bug spray early for preventative?

I have not experienced or heard of that, but that sound frustrating. I don't think the treatment would hurt to prevent a bug issue. I would check with Master Gardeners or some nursery store in your area and see if they have thoughts. More and more, bringing pictures seems to be really helpful for getting good advice.

I have 3 really old ones that have never been pruned. Theyre probably 10-12 feet high amd leaning over. I was going to cut them down and plant new. Could I juat "hard prune" them?

Yes, they should respond with new growth. Perhaps cut them to 2 to 3 foot stubbs or trunks?

Thanks for watching, and while it is called a "rose of Sharon," it is actually not a rose, but more of a hibiscus plant. That also means no thorns!!
