I've ventured this far into rabbit hole guys, I really don't think there's any going back hahaha.
Thanks to Demon for pointing me in the right direction to find this series.
I'm finally taking a look at where all of this started, here at Sakura Gakuin haha.
These episodes will probably be out once a month or twice a month, depending on my work load, but hopefully this makes it up without any issue, otherwise you know the deal :)
I love you guys, thanks for all the love and support, stay safe and I'll catch you in the next one.

I agree with Cryptic. The Nendo tests give a better introduction to the girls. It's a more intimate setting where their personalities can shine more. The SUN episodes are pretty good and fun to watch. I think you should do the 2010 Nendo test and maybe a few early music videos to give you an idea of what they do. Also, you get to really meet Mori-Sensei. He's a hoot. Take your time. Pretty soon you will be able to recognize all of these Super Ladies on sight. Marina stood out the most to me initially. She's so frenetic and happy all the time. Airi, the tallest, is so shy it's almost painful to watch. But, she becomes a model and an actress and is much more self-assured these days. Nene is so empathetic that her becoming a nurse like her mother is no surprise. Anyway, you'll learn who they all are very soon. Thanks for the Sakura Gakuin reaction. It's much appreciated here. The questions they ask the CEO are probably motivated by the super-lady theme being so central to Sakura Gakuin, and the girls are still struggling with grasping what that even means. But it's good (or let's say, helpful) to keep in mind that the Japanese society is still heavily reliant upon traditional roles, and that these girls are ten to twelve years old, so they most likely have not yet reached the point at which you start questioning the rules. BTW, you can find the ideal woman goal being mentioned in the Megitsune lyrics, as that (very old) Japanese concept is also known as YAMATO NADESHIKO. As for SUN as the series' title, I have no clue except for 'sun', or NICHI in Japanese, is the first of the two kanji that make up NIHON (Japan), with the HON part meaning 'root' or 'origin'. Land of the rising sun (as seen from China).

The approach Principal Kuramoto took in this class is not a one-off exercise, one of the basic philosophies of Sakura Gakuin is to encourage these girls who are interested in careers in the entertainment business to discover and explore their own interests, ideas and creativity, to go hand-in-hand with the self-motivations for what they are doing. Here are some excerpts from the interview with Mitsuru Kuramoto in their 10th Year Memorial Book: Before Sakura Gakuin was established we talked about doing something interesting with the children of "Amuse Kids", which is the young artists' training division inside Amuse... At that time, we talked about how wonderful it would be if we could create a place where kids could gain awareness, make discoveries, and let their creativity blossom. This was also a thing that made me decide to take part to Sakura Gakuin as principal when the school started... First of all, I thought of the keyword "Super Lady" _(Shoe Metal note: using English, not an existing Japanese expression)._ I thought about the concept of becoming a great human being, even before thinking of becoming successful as idol. We were conscious of being an educational institution that focused on the future of our students. I thought that if these girls became super ladies, the world would become a better place at the same time. It's a bit of a grandiose statement (laughs). I think it's very important for women to create this era... Sakura Gakuin is a school where you learn to become a super lady, like those role models. Although they had to learn such entertainment skills as singing and dancing in SG, I wanted them to learn much more than that. By studying at Sakura Gakuin, I wanted the students to focus on their own goals and acquire the ability to make their dreams come true.

Oh, you're going down this route, eh? Sakura Gakuin is just something else, thought I would stop watching when Su 'graduated', but end up watching till now, totally fell in love with all 36 members. Enjoy watching them. Sakura Gakuin nendo tests are also fun to react to (just have to find one with English subs, which, thankfully, there are) - and don't forget the pre-nendo test pranks as well :) And to answer/give a reply to your inquiries, 1. You're right, Sakura Gakuin is not a school, but the girls do go there about almost every day (including weekend) to practice, do video shoot, recording, train, etc. 2. Hana alcohol snack, misinterpretation, not alcohol-contain snack, but snacks you'd normally associate with when drinking alcohol 3. "Sun!" it seems is the theme/title of their second video release - each year they would release a year end video with a different theme. The Sun episodes may seem a bit dry for some, but there are certainly other videos about the girls as it pertain to Sakura Gakuin, ie. Nendo Tests, (insert sg member's name) funny momments, the girls being guest at other shows, live performances, Su's farewell surprise, etc. All the best in your channel!

The overall school concept was there from the beginning, but it got more fleshed out after SG signed to Universal J and more money could be spend. However, the initial SG period is a lot of trial and error and the Sun episodes are part of it. There are some theories how Sakura Gakuin came to life in 2010 and the 10 members were selected. The most plausible theory (for me) is that already existing subunit concepts were combined by Amuse under the roof of one idol group with Ayami Muto as leader. She was the ace of Amuse at that time. It's probably more cost efficient to train and promote the members in a larger group with more activities during the year and still have a chance to repeat the success of Perfume with one of the subunits. - MiniPati already existed as a group with a song (Raura, Nene, Marina) managed by Kobametal. - The BABYMETAL concept already existed 2009 with Su as singer. Yui and Moa were selected by Koba later on in the auditions for SG, which were held in 2009 over several months for promising children already signed by Amuse. Koba couldn't find candidates on the same level as Su, so he chose the approach with Su as lead singer and Moa and Yui as scream and dance in a completely different role. - Ayami was the leader of the Twinklestars subunit with 7 members (Ayami, Raura, Nene, Marina, Hinata, Yui, Moa). Ayami gave a hint that the concept was there from the very beginning. Twinklestars got the most promotion and money at first, so apparently Amuse was quite confident in Ayami's traction. - The remaining members Ayaka and Airi were a surprise, because they didn't have singing or dancing experience, they were sucessful models/actresses (Yuika from Karen Girls was expected by fans as SG member). So it seems that from the beginning Amuse considered their most promising candidates of the whole entertainment category for SG and not only singers and dancers. In retrospect Amuse was correct, they are the most sucessful SG graduates in Japan.

Ayaka, the girl that was reading about Marilyn Monroe, has become a good actress herself. Have you watched Alice in Borderland? And Su was looking so intense at Ayami probably because she admired her. Ayami is nearly a couple of years older than Su, was the class president at SG that year (the band's ace in normal idol terms), and she had also been the ace at Karen Girls, the first Su group. So for her she must have been a kind of mentor figure. The only time I've seen Su crying hard is when Ayami graduated from SG.

Yes, you can occasionally see evidence of pre-existing connections between people in early Sakura Gakuin material. Ayami and Suzuka from Karen Girl's, and Ayami and Yui's families were friends even before that. Raura, Nene and Marina were in Mini Pati before, and that bond is important through their entire time in SG. "Principal" Kuramoto also worked with a number of the girls before this, which I think you can see in how easily this first class flowed and in the easy rapport. Plus he's just good with kids.

Suzuka and Ayami have a huge amount of respect for each other, here is what Ayami tweeted on Suzuka's 18th birthday (Google translate, so not perfect !): "The other day, when I told my friends about the suspension of activities, it was Su-chan who contacted me earlier than anyone else. I had no experience of singing, but I met Karen Girl's, and I was really impressed and wanted to be as good as Su-chan. Thanks to Su-chan. very." Second part was fan translated: "Su-chan who has become such an amazing person, said to me that she admires me. And she wanted to always be by my side, and that even if Su-chan has became hard-to-approach celebrity, there are times when she got inspired by me only. I have faith in that. So I pledged within my heart, that I will definitely make a refreshing return. Congratulation on the Tokyo Dome concert! Happy birthday!!"

I suspect if they were talking to a woman at the time, they would have asked the same question about what it takes to become a super lady. Besides, I think its very important to get a guys perspective on that just like it is very important for boys to get a womans perspective on what it takes to be a decent guy. We're all in this together. We should stop dividing ourselves by gender, race, class, etc. As for the video itself, IDK, it kind of makes the whole thing seem a little more hokey than it should be. Maybe its just my mood today. There are more interesting and fun videos from Sakura Gakuin. Thy have lots of really good songs to listen to. :)

This is Japan, and women's lib haven't quite made it there in force yet, so you notice it's mostly guys working in the office or higher positions. But it's good to know most of them achieved their dreams .... Ayaka is a model and actress in Alice in Borderland, Nene is nurse, and Su is Queen... And Moa is ofcourse SUPER MOA! And the thing is, this is just the beginning.... its not like they had a whole road map as to what to do with SG, so these beginning girls were kinda the guinea pigs on how to develop SG. Ayumi the Stdent President was with Su in Karen girls...so many details and stuff. Have fun. Marina becomes student President after Su, and her unplugged mini concert with the other graduates to the younger girls is a tear jerker.

Nice one, thanks! There is no going back: you are forever lost in the deeper and darker side of the Fox Hole... just like us :) Yep, Su's expressions are so good... she would be so good at comedy or drama. Remember they are actually acting. But somehow their real personalities come out from time to time (specially Moa's hehe) and you end up knowing a little more from each girl, just to discover how talented and skilled they actually are. I'm not sure about Marilyn as a role model either. But I guess it's okay. As it's already said in the comments, SG is not before BABYMETAL. The heavy music club was formed since SG's beginning (you can see here even a BABYMETAL short clip during Su's introduction). Until next time!

I always look forward to the Fukei who always comments on these videos. It feels like we have our own community of Fukei here. You know, I think alot of the time they're not acting. Mori-sensei says often that they always want to film the girls' reactions to situations and events. I know of course there are some parts that are scripted of course, but in the background footage, the girls only know what's going to happen next, but not exactly. The reactions 'seem' so genuine that it's really hard to believe everything is acted out. That's how we're able to glean how adorable their personalities are cause now that all of them are adults, their personalities still reflect their reactions and traits shown in SG. One piece of background footage I saw was after the Nendo test, and the girls were comparing their answers and Ayami was the center of attention. One example of something you can tell that's entirely scripted (or maybe it was totally unscripted) is the Gossip Corner where three members talk about one other member. The delivery of the lines are so awkward and forced. Anyways, I like to think (or imagine in my own mind) that most of the time it's really their personality showing through. I think that's why I adore all of them so much. Oh, and I'm glad Gombers is watching these. It might take a while for you to learn all of their names. But as you watch the years go by (I believe this episode is in 2010), you've got 36 girls altogether to learn about if you keep going. Enjoy!
@road-runner
@road-runner 2 жыл бұрын
@@Codametal Yep, you are totally right. I believe there is plenty of room for improvisation there. Actually I don't believe it's all scripted (yes, that gossip corner makes it pretty obvious). A good actress/actor is good at improvising and it also adds authenticity to their character which happens to be themselves here. In the other hand, there are moments when they aren't acting (scripted or improvised) like when they get emotional and so... you know. In my opinion, only on those moments you can tell they are 100% themselves. But I'm sure they use plenty of their own persona to build their character. At the end of the day it's cool and aligned with the purpose of the group.

At 23:05, "年中無休(Nenjyu mukyu)" is Japanese idiom, and means "Open all year round". But here he has changed the kanji for "無(mu, nothing)" to "夢(mu or yume, dream)" and the kanji for "休(kyu, or yasu-mu, rest)" to "求(kyu, or moto-meru, seek). And he has made the new phrase as "seek your dreams, open all year round". At 27:19, Hyakunin Isshu(百人一首) is a collection of Japanese 100 Waka(和歌) poems written about a thousand years ago, and almost all of the poems were written by nobles of the time. We learn it in school, and it is sold as Karuta cards. But it is written in old Japanese, so it is difficult for modern Japanese to read them and understand their meanings. I have one book about it in my bookshelf, but I don't read it at all. but Ayami loves it, and if we watch the next class video, we can see that she makes it her own. In fact, many of the poems are about love, and they are very romantic that girls like once they know it. At 28:53, 「木下のハゲじじい」("KI" no shita no "HA"ge "JI"jii) means " A bald old man under the tree, or A bald old man named Kinoshita ", and as a pun, is one of the ways for remembering mathematical equations about velocity in Japan. 「距離(きょり、Kyori, distance)」, 「速さ(はやさ、Hayasa, velocity)」, 「時間(じかん、Jikan, time)」, we take the acronyms of the three words, and make a diagram like that which Hana draw at 29:00, and learn the relationship between multiplication and division as a kind of pun. Hana is a beautiful girl with straight hair, but she loves Pro-wrestling under the influence of her father. And she also has an old man side, as her favorite food is "スルメ(Surume, Dried squid)". Furthermore, many of the members at this time liked old-fashioned food like snacks for drinking. About detail, please watch "Uki uki Midnight", or "Sakura Gakuin, Growing Up Grand Prix ENG SUB". It seems that Hana & Rinon made a surprise appearance at a Sakura Gakuin live the other day.

_"so it is difficult for modern Japanese to read them and understand their meanings."_ It makes me think of current Modern English compared to Old (example: Beowulf), Middle (example: Canterbury Tales), and even Early Modern English (example: Shakespeare). Old English is largely unrecognizable as both written and spoken English by modern standard. Middle is more recognizable, but can take quite a bit of knowledge of that period's lexicon to fully decipher, as a lot has changed (for instance, the word "nice" in Middle English meant "foolish"). Early is largely recognizable in form, but can still be confusing in meaning. Language development can be very interesting. :)

The coolest thing about going down the Babymetal/SG fox hole is that it puts you face to face with Japanese culture in its purest form, with all of its neat aspects as well as its flaws. The positives of course; you see kids who are given so much independence and exposed to so much at a young age and are pushed to meet the limits of their capabilities and even go beyond them. Lots of emphasis on being good people, politeness, manners, treating each other kindly and helping each other, being your best self and be someone for others to look up to. But at the same time you kind of realize Japan is still stuck in the past in a lot of ways. The society is still very patriarchal, its own women practically reject the tenants of feminism almost entirely. There's a lot importance given on comparing themselves to each other with the whole making the girls regularly line up by height as well as giving them rankings in the Nendo test, as well as all of the mental stress that comes with that. It's fascinating, if anything else....addictingly fascinating...
@whoville1064
@whoville1064 2 жыл бұрын
I mean, the things you pointed out that were "flaws of japanese culture" isn't really completely accurate for that description.. For starters, test scores and heights are compared all the time these days, everywhere, not just Japan, and it's not really always a bad thing, unless you are just not comfortable with your height.. And the Nendo test, to my understanding, isn't even a serious test that is going to get anyone into college, so the rankings aren't really based on how academically smart they are.. Second, a good competition keeps younger kids motivated to do better next time, as long as the adult is encouraging, which Mori Sensei is pretty supportive of the girls.. I get how some of these things could have to potential to be damaging, but the way you put it, as if it was "Japanese culture" or just them being "stuck in the past" is pretty hypocritical, as most countries in the world still do the same things, a lot of students all over the world like to look at their friends results and compare their papers
