3 years ago I bought a ranch house in the country with some land in sw MO. I completely gutted the house to the foundation and rebuilt it myself, to meet my needs/wants. This is my forever home so I spared no expense adding things like spray foam and solar/wind/hydro power. When I was in the designing phase, I knew I would be adding an outdoor entertainment area with a natural pool/pond, kitchen/dinning/living and a bathroom that would be the focal point. So I added large sliding doors from the master bedroom and the great room. I just finished the house tonight and now it’s time to do the outdoor area. My pond/pool will be similar to yours in size and how close it is to the house. It occasionally gets below freezing typically 2-3 weeks out of the year at night. Since I have an enormous surplus free electricity I’m planning on having a hot tub area (used in the winter months only) incorporated in the pool and the water will flow into the pool in the winter months. I’m hoping it will extended my swim season and keep the water temperature above freezing when we have really cold winters like this year. I’m also working on the design to have a gas fire feature that will give the illusion the fire is coming up out of the water. I’m just in the design/planning phase and plan on starting the building after just he 4th of July. I’m definitely excited to start and I really found this video very informative. I just subscribed and now I’m going to bing watch your videos.

That is waaaaaaaay cool!! Congrats on finishing the home!! Sounds like a lot of work but now you can benefit from the fruits of your labor inside😊👍! You have great ideas with seems to be goal oriented and hard working... God bless your efforts! That is great you can connect the hot tub! So how would you filter and heat the hot tub you are planning? Did you put up a lot of solar panels For the home??
@JP-kb4yi
@JP-kb4yi 3 жыл бұрын
@@UnitedRanch I’m planning for the waterfall to flow directly into the hot tub section first and then another waterfall from the hot tub to the swimming area. The heat for the hot tub will only be on in cooler months not all year. I have 3 renewable power source, solar wind and hydro. The solar and wind portion produces an average of 380% of my monthly electrical demand during my peak usage. I have 2 2000 watt wind turbines I purchased from Missouri Wind and Solar just over $2k for both. My solar system is 48 or 50 375 watt panels that are mounted on steel post in one of my goat pastures. It’s out of sight and takes up space I don’t use but my goats love the shade they provide on hot summer days. The hydro is more experimental at this stage with mixed results depending on the water level in the creek on my property.

Like your pond. I am going to surround mine with super tall banana plants. Nothing will fall in or blow in. It will get direct sun from 11 am until 4 pm. But I plan to have plenty of water plants to help minimize algae growth. I'm building in the tropics.... latitude 14° .... Build date is Feb 2025.

This was a great video to put some things in perspective. We have a few sites on our property that could work, but it involves cutting down fruit trees and carving into hills. We want this done in several years when the kids are all good swimmers, so maybe we can dig a few feet each year by hand?

@@UnitedRanch Of course you can , there are also videos in English explainig this here in YT. There is also a video conference from a Mexican architect how asure you can replace cement in 75% by ashes and ash make cement stronger by creating molecules wich are like spiderwebs ... unfortunatelly this is not promoted because is not a good busines for the big industries how are destroying our world. Do your research , you can do a lot of things with ashes... Good luck . {i apologize about my English}

Man I love this!!! Does the dirt mound for the waterfall shift or does the waterfall rocks shift? If not how do you keep it from shifting?
@UnitedRanch
@UnitedRanch 3 жыл бұрын
Oh awesome thanx!! 👍... no actually when the dirt mound was created the excavator compacted it pushing down the natural dirt mixed with the natural rock while adding water to the mound to help compact it! Also I planted fruit trees and plants around the mound to even further support it and because I like fruit and plants 😂.... no issues at all praise God! Also the main rocks for the waterfall are so heavy and also I placed them where they rest stable... also where the water meets the rocks down the waterfall I sprayed the waterfall foam which also helps stabilize. Also over a small amount of time natural plants grow along the waterfall rocks also stabilizing. Some of the very end side rocks that are light with no waterfall foam in between can shift but I’m ok with that because I can add other cool rocks or rearrange them. I hope this helps 👍

Living in a hot and humid area with not a lot of money, I am thinking of a dipping pond with natural water features to purify the water. Here, mayhaw trees that grow in the lower Mississippi water shed are a nice looking tree, and they produce healthy fruit as well. Other features I am looking into to incorporate edible and decorative landscaping that works well in this south east part of the USA. Other plants to use here would be nice to find out about here if you have other suggestions.

That is a great idea! I love spending my time and efforts into productive things… like plants that I can use for medicine or eating or evergreen seclusion. Great thinking … I will have to look up Mayhew trees! I’ve been having fun experimenting and growing a lot of edible plants in my bog and floating planters and side planters! I have some videos up but a ton more raw footage of other plants I would just need to compile and edit. Your vision sounds exciting👍🤜🤛

How do you keep snakes and stuff out of your pond? Do you just go through the pond and make sure nothing is in there that can harm you or do you just let it be? I know nothing is 100% guaranteed NOT to have some type of creatures in it but it was something I was just thinking of. Love the design and I can't wait to make one one day!!!
@UnitedRanch
@UnitedRanch 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much and it should be real exciting in planning your swim pond out😊👍! Honestly as far as snakes go I haven’t seen any on my ranch I believe due to my animals roaming my acreage around my house taking control of their home👍. Even as far as large wildlife I don’t see much on the ranch due to my property fenced with electricity and my animals taking charge and claiming their property. Besides my perimeter fence I also have an interior fence surrounding my gardens and pond to prevent my own animals getting in there and taking a swim and eating my crops lol! As far as wildlife that goes in or around the pond ... so many are beneficial and I enjoy to be with around the pond like the dragonflies, frogs, fish, hummingbirds, lizards, and even the beneficial night bats (killing tons of mosquitos) that can get water from the pond. My new edition of honey bees to the ranch has been awesome because the honey bees loooove the waterfall and bog as they get the water and they are so friendly and I get to reap their honey👍👍... win win!Keeping the pond healthy and aerated really does attract the beneficial wildlife even down to the small microorganisms you want👍

How do I determine if this will work in my area? I am not sure if it is too cold here in the winter to keep plants alive. Is there a way to figure that out or a list of plants that will work so the bog filter is functional?
@UnitedRanch
@UnitedRanch 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yes people swim in these in the summer and ice skate on them in the winter I see! Yes in below freezing temps all winter most of the plants will die off or go dormant... you can save most of the rhizomes however in the fall for the following spring. I have my flag grass stay green and I think one or two more plants. The good news is the fish pretty much go dormant too (less active) so less fish waste and less ammonia produced by them to filter... the sun and heat are not a factor like the heat of summer as well (in battling excessive algae). So it’s not like you have the natural summer conditions where you have a ton of ammonia to filter out! Also, the nitrifying bacteria go mostly dormant in the winter but there is still can be other types of good bacteria in cooler weather at work that I’ve seen in my research! I still run my pump in the winter tho ...and I hear you should have a pocket in the ice from aeration (a diffuser or waterfall) (if it freezes over) for toxic gases to be released that could build up under the ice and it’s good for oxygen to be in the pond even in winter👍... I hope some of that helps! So I’d say start planning 👍

Would you be able to do this same thing in Mn?
@UnitedRanch
@UnitedRanch 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I don’t see why you couldn’t do it in MN! The bog plant rhizomes you might need to care for in the winter in order for them to make it through the harsh winter for the following spring. I am able to leave my rhizomes in the bog because I am in zone 9 but there are ways to preserve perennial plants even in harsh winters!👍

Is there a chance that putting a greenhouse over the bog would help the plants live through the winter, or would that cause more problems than being helpful?
@UnitedRanch
@UnitedRanch 3 жыл бұрын
That is a pretty cool idea if you live in harsh winter climates where you would need to otherwise say gather some of the rhizomes in the winter!! My weather is zone 9 so not crazy harsh so I don’t have to preserve the rhizomes or plants in the bog for them to come back the following spring. But with that said... a lot of my bog plants aren’t evergreen so it still looks bare in the winter except for the few evergreen plants I have in it. That also might help you in the heat of summer if you have no shade for your bog... putting like a mesh shade cloth over the top...I find the bog plants love mostly shade with some sunlight here and there👍

Hello there😊! So everyone’s project will be different depending on the natural materials you have and what work you hire out or do yourself... But for the main materials I bought....The pump was around $440, the liner was around $1700, the 6,000 pounds of pea gravel was I think around $90. The two huge flagstones were I think $140 combined. The fish were around 10 for one dollar haha! (Comet goldfish at the feed store). The excavation is tricky because I used the excavator for a French drain for another project as well but the guy said it would’ve been I think around $3500 to excavate the pond and put on the mound for the bog filter. And he was saying I think for a regular pool it would have been around $10,000 for excavation. But that’ll totally depend on various factors for you but it’s a good ballpark👍... or you can rent a bobcat or dig by hand depending on the size and what type of dirt and rock you are on! And there’s other little things like waterfall foam, plants, boat dock (of railroad ties) and such but those are the main costs! I Hope that helps👍
