Palliative care for dogs and cats is a serious thing to consider in a number of different situations. If your pet has an untreatable condition that will ultimately be fatal, if they have a condition that will result in a severely compromised quality of life despite not being fatal, or if they are old and just starting to decline in general.
Palliative care is all about maximizing your pets quality of life for the time they have left, before euthanasia needs to be seriously considered. It involves many aspects of pet caring, from managing any underlying disease to the best of our ability, controling pain, ensuring enough is eaten through to modifying your dog or cats environment to make their life as easy as possible.
Thinking about palliative care sooner will mean your pet not only has a better quality of life as they comes to the end of their life, but they will also have a longer life, allowing you to delay any euthanasia decision.

If your dog is unwell take him/her to vets and if possible take dog vets every month coz this will help if you get reported for animal cruelty which happened to me but I had the law on my side coz the law checked up with the vet how often I go and what meds my 20 year old Jack Russell was on but my problem was I don't drive therefore rely on taxis and 95% of taxi drivers in my area is Muslim they gave refused taking me and dog to vet and they have refused to take us home from the vets so I have had to resort carrying my dog for 5 miles to the vets and 5 miles back to house.. My Jack Russell Terrior had cancer for 5 years and the cancer was on his head, in his mouth and bear his back end he also had a cancer lump.. I never wanted to have him put to sleep but I was harassed by local authority to have him put to sleep to save hassle and the dog had no blood in urine or stools, no shaking or vomiting due to pain and if my cats went near him whilst he eating he chase em off and he had dignity to get himself up and go out to do what he needed to do and even though he couldn't carry ball he still played using his paws and I told the vet this but like I said I had to have him put to sleep to save hassle and it took 3 people to hold my Jack Russell terrier down whilst he was injected with lethal injection but his time was running out and I can say he a tough cookie like his Master

Thank you. My dog is suffering with stage 3 kidney disease and he has starting having small seizures. I'm a Registered Nurse and I see people who have power of attorney over their loved ones keep them alive way past when they should and I don't want to do that to my little guy. I've been giving subcutaneous fluids at home but it's not working as well as it was. He's starting to have a hard time getting up and down as well. I know if the seizures get worse I will have to think about euthanasia so he doesn't have to suffer from scary seizures. I want him to die at home with us. I don't want to take him to a scary vet clinic for his last moments and I don't know what to do about it. No vets here will come to my house to euthanize. All I know is human beings would rather be at home with their loved ones than in a hospital when they are dying. Why don't our dogs deserve the same?

Why do vets charge outrageous amounts for pain medications that come from substances thousands of years old? The cost should be pennies, not $50-100 per refill. And why do vets even charge to euthanize a pet after the pet parents already were soaked for $10, 20 or $30,000? In Houston vets refer sick animals to MedVet, the only ‘specialty’ vet hospital in the entire Houston area? Apparently, MedVet has bought up all the vets who used to be ‘specialty’ vets. MedVet is a nationwide corporation so they only care about the bottom line and soaking worried pet parents out of as much money as possible. Just 15 years ago vets used to be decent people who mostly cared about the well being of animals and pet owners. But now it seems obvious that most vets are only concerned with bleeding as much money from pet owners as possible. It’s sad that corporations are buying out vets and destroying healthcare for animals. Corporations have already destroyed the healthcare system for human beings. CEOs of insurance companies or big pharma make up to $600 MILLION a year. How many people do they deny service to (kill) to take that much money? Only psychopaths could accept the. Immoral amounts of money they take from the healthcare system. Now veterinarian medicine is just a smaller version of the corrupt system we have in the FOR PROFIT healthcare system. Only the rich will be able to own pets any longer. The poor or middle class can’t afford $20,000 vet bills, with that $20,000 just padded bills. Vets charge up to 2000-5000% more than they cost for medications. And since vets have lobbied governments a lot of products that were once available at feed stores are no longer there. Vets want monopolies on everything. They did have monopolies on flea drop chemicals but now people can buy them over the counter. I had one corrupt vet who told me she would have to see each of my 6 pets to dispense Revolution flea drops to them. She tried to charge me $100 office visit fees for each pet and then charge more for Revolution drops that had costs that were outrageously overpriced. She told me she had to see each pet because “it was the state law”. If it was the state law it was vets and their lobbyists who created that law to screw millions of people. Ahh, capitalism. This is what it really looks like. It’s the worst system for people on the planet. But the best system for psychopaths who live preying on the vulnerable. The last good vet I had was over 15 years ago. Ever since then vets have become nothing but predators who live in their mansions built of the bodies of countless animals and the countless tears of pet parents. What a sick country the US is becoming because of wanton greed. Greed should be outlawed. But that would kill capitalism and $600 MILLION a year salaries. And some less than bright people equate capitalism with ‘freedom’. What freedom? The freedom to be constantly ripped off by psychopaths?

I started care today and I'm so devastated but Ben (cat) gets to be at home and there's no sudden dying on a table with bright lights. He has pain medicine to take for two or three days. It was so fast. He can't even walk. It's leukemia. He purred for me.

Great video - my 11 year old Malshi is coming up to her final days and I’m having a hard time letting her go. She is disagnosed with stage 2 heart failure and her liver is 30% enlarged … food and water intake is minimal and today was a hard day. Looking forward to watching more of your videos

I will be putting her to sleep soon but until than how to keep her pain level down till I do? So far they gave me steroid and an antibiotic to make her comfortable they say but why didn’t they give her pain meds? Can i request something? What should I ask for? She has lymphoma and it is all over her, she seems to want to hold her head up Roth now because the lymph odes are so swollen and the prednisone isn’t seeming to get it smaller. I just am not sure what to do.. she has some goods days still but just laying down is difficult for her.

If you think that she is in pain then absolutely you can request pain medication. There are a number of different options depending on the rest of your dog's history. Give your vet a call and discuss your concerns with them. I hope you can keep her comfortable for a little longer, but you also need to be always thinking about what is best for your dog. his may help - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qp5pjLacspO-YqM.html

My 7 1/2 year old english mastiff has soft tissue sarcoma in her lower left leg. She is not a good candidate for amputation or removal and repeated skin grafts. We have opted to go with palliative care and loving attention. At first I felt guilty and selfish for choosing this, but this has helped me come to terms with this decision. Her pain is mostly manageable and we just don't encourage activity she's not enthused about. She is just not near the point where euthanasia is realistic yet. But if she can be comfortable most of the time and cuddling (her favorite thing!) is not painful for her then this truly is the right choice. She seems to understand something is about to change and she comforts me more than I am comforting her these days.

I feel mislead. You appear to be a salesman of a vet (albeit successful). Ok, so everyone should talk to a vet. 😑

If you want the best care for yourself you consult a doctor, it's the same for your pet but you can do plenty at home with the environmental management, goal setting and feeding I discuss in this video. I have also done other pain killing videos. And yes, if your pet is unfortunately coming to the end of their life you should definitely talk to a vet

@@OurPetsHealthI had an honest vet 30 years ago and he knew I wanted to take our dog to the country at my parent’s house where he loved it the best. The vet gave me a few pills to give to our dog with loved ones around him. Now there is a massive industry that charges thousands of dollars to have someone come by and feign empathy. Vets even charge outrageous amounts for euthanasia. It didn’t matter that they made thousands of dollars over the lifespan of a pet. They have to bleed money out of vulnerable people all the way to the end. Vet medicine used to be an honorable progression. Although there are probably a few good ones still practicing the majority of them are immoral and greedy. Because it cost so much to keep a pet healthy people are abandoning pets. They aren’t getting pets. One day vets will be charging so much they’ll realize no one has pets to gouge anymore and be forced out of business. To the immoral ones I suggest going to work at fast food restaurants. At least there the prices are fixed and as much as vets will try to raise prices they won’t.

@@MovieMakingManI agree with you. I had my beloved dog put to sleep a few months ago. She was my first dog and will also be my last. I have seen enough of the vet industry to never want to own a dog again!

@@sfrwriter I’m really sorry you lost your dog. I know how painful it is. I lost two of my cats a few months ago (Marcie & Shadow). It is so sad how vets gouge people and prey on their love of their pets. I was charged $350 apiece for X-rays of my two cats. That’s $700. I learned X-ray machines vets use cost $20,000 to $40,000. In as little as 28 X-rays vets have those machines paid for so after those 28 X-rays they are making pure profit. It’s immoral to charge people $350 for an X-ray. They knowingly charge that much knowing most people can’t afford them and the pet dies and the owner is left broken-hearted. Price gouging is rampant among vets. I know I couldn’t sleep at nite for causing pets harm and causing owners to be distraught. All the best to you.

@@MovieMakingMan I feel the same way. I had another dog which I had to give up, because I was no longer able to pay for her medical bills. By that time, I had approximately spent $10,000 on her. She tore the cruciate ligaments in both of her knees. On top of that, she needed surgery for a luxating patella. Each of these surgeries cost $2500-$3500 where I live. Add to that some miscellaneous stuff like meds, cartrophen shots, laser therapy, and you have a total of $10,000. She was still not fully healed after that treatment and needed yet another surgery. I was still paying off a mortgage at that time and going through a horrible divorce. I had lost my job, my savings had hit rock bottom, I was going to the food bank. To prevent my other dog and myself from going down, I had no other choice but to give the problematic dog up. Guess what, a rescue org's orthopedic surgeon fixed her up and she was adopted out within a month! I spent two years (!) trying to fix her without any luck. That tells me that the vet I was taking her to, was just taking me for a ride. Again, never will I have another dog, unless the vet industry drastically changes.
