One of my all time favorite tunes....The Tennessee Waltz! Thanks for that one! I love the look and the sound of the MD515CC/N. Probably the MD815 had the best sound.

Great video and playing. Loved the tone of the 415 most. Maybe because i play a D18. But i noticed when it got to the 515s plus they were brighter and would cut more. Either a 6 or 415 for me.

Hard to pick just one. The 815 was the top choice but it should be with the best wood. I really like the 615 V. The varnish seems to project more sound I think. 🤔 Thanks guys that was the best one yet. Lol 😆

I chose the 315 , upgraded the gig bag to a solid body case. I love it!

Great comparasion. Thank you guys. I have a 315, it sounds so nice especially with a set of 80/20 strings. So I am not sure how much difference comparing to a 8 series. I love the adi top on my Eastman E10D-TC, may be I will buy a 805 someday.

I love that you can (kind of) find lefty mandolins from Eastman. I've got a 315 and some day maybe I'll try and get one of the nicer ones. I have an Eastman guitar in their antique varnish finish and it's so nice I'd love a mandolin in the same.

I like the 815 best, and prefer the varnish finish. Someday I will get one. I have a 515v now.

Gentlemen, they all sounded like a quality-built mandolin however to my ear I liked the 615 best. It seemed to have a more crisp, constant sound through the range of scale also the loudest to me. Thaks and great playing Jeramey. Keep on smiling.

I also agree, although differences were generally pretty subtle. Based on this review, I purchased the 615. The fact that it already had a good pick-up installed was a big plus.

4th subscriber LIKE; 6th desktop view. 8:40 - the aesthetics of the 515 CC/N would make it my first finish/choice - but with the oval hole configuration.

I have a 315, and it’s plays and sounds much better than far more expensive mandolins I’ve played. I just got my tone gard that I ordered from your store yesterday and its unreal the difference it makes.

Great comparison! I have a 304 and a 515, but am tempted by the extra binding of the 6 or 8. I know the 8 series gets the Adirondack spruce, but do I really need that?...probably. Now, just to find one in stock somewhere...

They all sound pretty thin/tinny but of the lot the 515v is superior to the others in overall projection, tone, and balance.. really shows that you really do get what you pay for when mandolin shopping. This sound is exactly why you need to pay 2-4 times more in order to get a decent to good quality sounding mando(from a non chinese maker with the exception of northfield, they are great advanced student to low end professional mandolins). This 515v would be fine for a beginning student to start and grow with, but an advanced student would outgrow these eastman mandolins quickly. Eastman has a very good bang for buck in their guitar line even for advanced students. They just aren't quite at the same level in their mando line( probably because of the huge amount of labor and skill involved in carving and tap tuning for a quality sound). I believe if Eastman would do a better job of thinning/carving their instruments and make them much less heavy most folks would gladly pay 25-30 percent more for a better more full sounding instrument. Even at this price point, they would still be much cheaper than most american and european instruments.

27:34 There are so many good ones which you sampled, but to me, I can tell you that my least favorite is the classic MD515. It just seems to lack the sound which the others have picked up. I even prefer the MD315 with the satin finish (probably because it has less interfering with the wood) over the classic MD515. I do like the other MD515 models - the CC/N model and the V (Varnish) model. The MD415 seems unique because of the difference in wood. The MD615 had a brilliant, very clean recording and I was quite impressed with it - especially for having the gloss finish. I would just want to see if it was that particular one, which happens to be a really great one - or if most of the 615s are good! Obviously, the MD815V had the best overall sound - and that is too be expected, as it has not only an Adi top, but the varnish finish, too.

My 504 always sounded thin to me, played it for 6 or 7 years it never really open up. It plays fine but......

I think the blonde 915 is gorgeous, wish it had been in the video cuz I'd love to hear it, but almost $3k for an Asian instrument just kinda rubs me wrong, somehow. Same reason I didn't look at Northfield when I upgraded last month. I hope their builders are paid well. They do great work from the Eastmans I've played.

We know that at the Eastman facility, they are highly skilled luthiers & their workers are treated great! We can't speak from personal experience of Northfield but we believe their workers are skilled luthiers & treated well as well. We hope that eases any of your worries, if any, they definitely do amazing work!

antique varnish could not be more important in this instance!! you need a worn varnish to have the instrument breathe and yet not have that unfinished wood sound..

MD315 - $919 MD515 - $1,299 MD615 - $1,749 MD815 - $2,059 . Note that some prices can vary based on the type of finish the mandolin has as well. The A-Style version of any of these runs about $300 less than the F-Style counterpart.
