Absolutely love this style of video👍. Received the calendar and my favourite images are January, February and October. I gave it to my wife and she was flicking through and suddenly stopped and said "oh! I like that!" It was June! Couldn't believe it.

Thanks for the comparisons, but for me, the instant decider was the recent sale price of $500 US for the 50mm 1.8 - Done! Even Ricci says one of the sharpest primes in the Z lineup. Can't beat the sharpness, size and weight and really enjoying using it.

I don't think one should buy a 1.2 lens for sharpness. It better serves low light photographs and fabulous bokeh (which, by definition, is NOT sharp).

I’m not really surprised by the results of the comparison. I’m really not interested in purchasing any third party lenses. To me it makes no sense to use less-than the best native glass on my Z7 II. I love the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2S. I just used it as my only lens to photograph an expectant woman. I’m looking forward to getting the 100-400mm soon and eventually the 85mm f/1.2 when it’s available.

LOL! That Arnie impression was priceless😂🤣 Great vid as always👍 As for the lenses, I'm not sure I 'm a big fan of the Meike. While it is supposedly f1.2, I think it's at least one stop darker in terms of T-Stops. Moreover, I was not too impressed with the bokeh balls nor the sharpness at f1.2. I'm happy with the performance of my 50mm 1.8S.

Excellent comparison. From your review, I appreciate the f 1.2 max aperture, affordability, and build quality of the Meike. Unfortunately, the soft focus and lack of XIF data were disappointing. The Viltrox AF 50mm f/1.8 Z STM is a better option. The Nikkor Z 40 mm f2 will also be more attractive to some, despite the shorter focal length and slower aperture. Of course, if one can afford it, the Nikkor S Line 50 mm f1.8 is also a good option.

I think Focus peaking would help with confirming manual focus. Clearly the Nikon wins as you said and the auto focus Nikon in either Nikon Lens is hard to pass up. The 1.8 works for me. Good job in comparison.

Thanks for the in-depth comparison review. Currently I own the 50 1.8s & thinking high & low, pondering, should I...?, should I...? decision to jump onto the 50 f1.2s. A very strong inclination now but will hold off until Nikon throw out their cashback offers :)

Interesting video. I think the Mieke is a good bit of kit for a portrait photographer on a budget. You have a megadap so I am curious to see how the autofocus of the megadap would work with such a challenge of a 1.2 lens. Obviously you would need to get the correct adapter to fit. I am interested as I like the idea of adapting M mount glass to the Z system. Lenses like the voigtlander 35mm 1.2v3 the 50 1.2, 75mm 1.5 or some exotic stuff like the meyer optik gorlitz trioplan 100mm 2.8 would provide smaller lighter lenses than the Nikon equivalents. Megadap or the smaller techart adapters may offer an alternative to folks looking at more vintage style lenses rather than the more optically perfect modern lenses.

Looks like the Meike's deal breaker is the short throw on the focus. Studio only me thinks. Otherwise; it's hanging in there for the most part. But for the money the S 1.8 would be the one to get.

The spots on the nikkor bokeh balls is probably some dust on the element .. may need a service. the "target" on the Meike is artifects from how one or more of the lense element is made. it was probably "lathed" cut and the last ring and dot looks like it was the last "pixel" of resolution the tool had. a bit like a CNC machine cutting a dome.

Great video, the outro was hilarious! 🤣 At 18:00 I think that the garbage container behind the beer keg was a bit sharper on the Meike than on the Nikon. It's really strange,the Meike is not as sharp where the focus is, but therefore depth of focus seems a bit wider, not sure if that is a valid conclusion or just some misinterpretation? It makes me wondering though on what use case the Meike 1.2 would fit. Maybe portraiture would benefit from having a bit of a softer lens, but then one could always throw a soft focus filter on the Nikon as well. 🤷‍♂️ I personally find the 50mm focal length a bit difficult to work with, but as always your compositions are really good. The image that you showed with the 24-70... I loved that instantly as well. Not sure, but could be the best shot of 2021 that I have seen on your channel. I do have a personal preference for shots that also include people, I think you're doing really good, but could be pushing a bit more to work with passer bys and so on. At least, I'd love to see that. People are an element that you can't control as easily. They add so much additional variation to a scene. Also think to remember the image about the garbage truck with the kissing couple that you took with the Hasselblad if I remember correctly. That's another extremely good one. And I also remember a video with the 200-400 where you used slower shutter speeds to blur people which also looked fantastic.

Honestly, I think the Meike was just focused further out than the Nikon. At 17:40, you can clearly see the Nikon was focused on the front of the first keg, but the Meike was focused far behind it, between the second and third keg, even. This kind of makes the sharpness and OOF comparisons pointless on that scene, because the area we're looking at isn't sharp on the Meike, and the Nikon is focused closer, thus blurring the background way more and creating a "more pleasing" image.

I would’ve happy with the Nikon 50 f1.8 . A manual lens wouldn’t be quite right for my vision. The Nikon 50 f1.2 is best, but price wise the 1.8 would do nicely.

That's a pretty good Arnold there, fellah! You could drop that in once in a while and we probably wouldn't complain:-) I have the 1.8 S lens and I think it's great, too. As an amateur I wouldn't want the size, weight and cost of the 1.2 personally, but I'm sure a pro can justify it.

In the oof of the Meike it’s aperture may open a hair wider . It definitely handles the light better than the Nikon f/1.2 . The reason is the Nikon has so many corrective elements. Other than that both Nikons are superior by quite a bit .

Quality sign off…I have the Z 50mm f1.8 prime and love it. That 50mm f1.2 Z glass is so good….but for this amateur, I think if I am spending $2000+ CAD on a lens it would be one of the f2.8 zooms.

I could be wrong but I think the dots you're seeing in the middle of the bokeh on the Meike is from how the glass is ground. I watched a video one time on the Sony G Master lenses and how they're made. They don't grind the glass in those lenses like everyone else does. The dots aren't always a bad thing. Some people like the character it gives. As long as it's not layered like an onion it's usually acceptable. If I was buying a 50mm lens it would probably be the 1.8 version.

I prefer modern autofocus for my eyeballs. I find manual focusing difficult particularly with mediocre to poor lighting conditions. Also, most modern cameras are not really set up for manual unlike many of the old film cameras. Thus, I would only consider autofocus lenses. The Meike looks like it would be only niche lens for me.

Mirrorless cameras (as opposed to DSLRs) are much more suited for manual focusing with being able to zoom 1:1 in the viewfinder and having focus highlighting. Of course it won't be as fast or as accurate and you will miss some shots, but it will make your connection with the photos that turn out much stronger. It's a different shooting experience. And these lenses usually have flaws but I think sometimes that adds character and makes those photos even more special. Trying to achieve clinical perfection has made my photography pretty stagnant and since I got my first manual focus lens (Samyang 85mm 1.4) for my Z6 II, it has definitely made me more open to experimenting with cheap, manual focus glass. I even got an adapter so I can use my Fujica film camera lenses on my Z6 II.

My first Z lens was the 24-70 f4. I bought the 50mm f1.8 for my second lens based on your recommendation so I had something for low light. I’m really happy with that purchase.

This is the fundamental problem with rating (marketing) lenses as f/1.8 or whatever. The f stop is an equation relative to how wide the lens can open to its diameter but it DOES NOT tell you about light transmission. This is why cine lenses use T stops. All cine lenses that are T2.8 will result in the same exposure and ligh transmission at T2.8.

Hi Matt from here a little speculation as to why Nikon's 50mm.f.1.2 is so big and heavy because Sony 50mm.f.1.2 it is a completely different size and weight even though it has four motors to move the glass and according to several tests is the best 50mm.f.1.2 from the three big brands, although there is probably so little difference that it means nothing in the real world. It also seems even more strange when we also consider that Canon's is also not as big and heavy as Nikon's monster of a 50mm.f.1.2, otherwise I think all of Nikon's other lenses look very normal compared to the competition. Hmm well I really struggled to see any real difference between any of the lenses. I always do. I understand utube compresses these videos which affects quality which makes me wonder if this way of viewing different lens has any real value. I do view on a smart phone and I will compare that to a view on my laptop to see if there is a really noticeable difference.

@@MattIrwinPhotography Yes Matt I have had a chance to look on a bigger screen and I can see the differences you mean. They are perhaps not as big as I thought they might be but they are there. The Meike I think especially when you look at the price of it compared to the Z 1.2 actually gives a good performance which if you are not going to enlarge the photos massively is very good for those on a tight budget.

If I remember correctly, when shooting these vids, you are juggling a lot of balls, what other people are doing (safety - am I getting in the way), are you going to be run over (this was an active laneway, cars allowed), what are you saying to camera, where are you up to in the vid, is focus right, are the settings the same, etc etc ... and I just missed that to begin with ... got their eventually :)

The metal body is for sure nice, but using a MF lens without focusing screens (like the ones from the old days of analog photography) sucks. I still wonder why a lot of vendors use plastic bodies even for expensive lenses. The weight advantage of plastic isn‘t that big.
