This is probably the most thematic abstract game I've ever seen :) Really cool, going on my wishlist immediately! Also Monique was like a tactical genius. She had a headstart, but she was just relentless and it felt Naveen didn't have a chance (not bashing Naveen, just Monique was orchestrating the play and was not willing to make a mistake :D )

I was just at my FLGP (Friendly Local Game Parlour - they serve alcohol but not food) yesterday, and I watched this game being stocked, and was wondering what it was. Shobū already scratches this itch for me, but I’m glad to know this exists and appreciate the review!

I’ve seen Shobu mentioned a few times already, and I can seen good reasons why. I own Shobu, and my wife and I enjoy that game. I’m going to put this on my wishlist as I see enough differences/nuances here. Great video guys. Subscribing ….now!

Great playthrough and review guys. I’m in the same camp as Naveen, don’t really enjoy chess-like games (e.g. Onitama, Santorini), but I have to say it is an intriguing game and would be happy to try it out at some point.

The theme to this game is actually so cool! And the rule book makes it stand out even more, I don't think I have laughed so much while reading a board game rule book. Way to take the win Monique! I'm curious to see how you think of the add-ons (we haven't gotten through them all yet)! Thanks for the video, I agree with Naveen that the game can sometimes feel like one player is one turn behind. Almost punishes you not optimizing every single turn!

I never knew planting trees could be so dangerous for our future :) Sounds like you are both talking about conflict abstract games vs friendly abstract games.

I love it! My husband would totally beat me as he’s a chess/strategy guy (and there are no dice rolls involved-ha ha), but I’d still play this with him.

Enjoyed the playthrough. This one has been on my radar for a while now. I'm hoping to see it at my FLGS and pick it up soon. I know I'll like it; I hope my wife will, too.

Have you tried Element? It's a nice little checkers-like game that reminds me of this game a bit

Thanks for showing this. I have a friend that is really interested in this one. I don't think it's for me though. I found myself very frustrated for Naveen in this playthrough as he was playing from behind, as he indicated.

In the light of some of your comments at the end of the video i want to recommend a 2 player only chess like game that i think you might really enjoy...Martian Chess by Looney Labs - it is very quick and thinky but in another totally unique way just try it!! Keep up the good work!

In the same boat as Naveen wrt abstract games. I'm good at the spatial puzzle ones like Patchwork, Azul, but my partner beats me in every single head-to-head, zero-sum, grid movement abstract games like Hive, Onitama, Santorini, and I assume this game as well. My theory is they are better at calculating a lot of viable moves/pawns and then also what would happen because of those moves, whereas I am more tactical and can only see what seems like a good move now but screw myself in the future. Flipping through the abstract games on BGG now, I think Tash Kalar is probably a very happy medium because the board state is so volatile, it deters their ability to calculate the future a little bit. Hope you've played that one / will get a chance to try it.

The theme reminds me of the great book "This Is How You Lose The Time War" but the player colors should be blue and red!

Can you plant a seed in the present and grow a shrub in the future?

If there are two evenly matched chess players, the player that went first (with the white pieces) wins more often. Since both of you have won, was the player that went first the winner more often in your games of "That Time You Killed Me"?

I love Go and chess but am generally not into modern abstract games (I guess I’d rather play chess or Go). But this actually looks super cool because it’s so thematic and quirky: growing trees and pushing them onto people! So I might go for this but I’d have trouble finding people to play it with… As for this playthrough, it was fun to watch, but wow that was just flat out murder from Monique! I think she needs a -1 pawn handicap from now on…!

Have you guys tried Shobu?

This review would have been even better if you had a spoiler section with a time stamp to talk openly about the other modules. They really seem to elevate the game to the point where people should know what the package is.

To me, an abstract game is one with no theme, only components and rules for manipulating them. I’d call this one a lightly themed game since the pieces and rules reflect the time travel theme but don’t delve very deeply into it.

This is the one that I feel I would enjoy quite a bit, but I am also convinced my wife would not be as open minded for it.

If you kill someone by knocking down a tree in the future, and then later get rid of that tree’s seed, that tree never existed. Would that dead pawn then return to life in the spot where he died?

Is it better than Onitama?

I remember when this game came out hearing the title and ignoring it because the tone it gave off didn't interest me. I'll say I have seen another video of someone reading the rules/flavor text and that tone still doesn't appeal to me. Actually watching gameplay however I find the game interesting. I really enjoy abstracts. Some of my favorites are Santorini, DVONN, LYNGK, TZAAR, YINSH, GIPF, and others. I appreciate the strategies, planning, setup and surprise you can do in these games. Chess to me has programmed moves and if you have memorized the proper defense or attack then if you know more of them than your opponent you should win. To me this game and Santorini for instance you don't have script plays and formations to utilize and counter, but instead react and in some cases use your power to thwart your opponent. Not sure if I've explained that well enough. Neat game, I will definitely check it out.
