In a future where genetic modification allows parents to give birth to children with pre-selected traits, highly intelligent and accomplished “Sleepless” individuals emerge. These Sleepless don’t require sleep. The story follows Leisha, a genetically-modified Sleepless, and her complex relationships with both other Sleepless and “normal” Sleepers. As tensions rise between the two groups, Leisha becomes an advocate for acceptance and tolerance. Eventually, the Sleepless establish their own society on an orbiting space station, while Leisha remains behind, preaching unity for all humans.
