"In the midst of an ugly Trump regime and a beautiful Baldwin revival, Eddie Glaude has plunged to the profound depths and sublime heights of Baldwin's prophetic challenge to our present-day crisis." -Cornel West
----------
James Baldwin grew disillusioned by the failure of the civil rights movement to force America to confront its lies about race. In our own moment, when that confrontation feels more urgently needed than ever, what can we learn from his struggle?
We live, according to Eddie S. Glaude Jr., in a moment when the struggles of Black Lives Matter and the attempt to achieve a new America have been challenged by the election of Donald Trump, a president whose victory represents yet another failure of America to face the lies it tells itself about race. From Charlottesville to the policies of child separation at the border, his administration turned its back on the promise of Obama's presidency and refused to embrace a vision of the country shorn of the insidious belief that white people matter more than others.
We have been here before: for James Baldwin, these after times came in the wake of the civil rights movement, when a similar attempt to compel a national confrontation with the truth was answered with the murders of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr. In these years, spanning from the publication of The Fire Next Time in 1963 to that of No Name in the Street in 1972, Baldwin transformed into a more overtly political writer, a change that came at great professional and personal cost. But from that journey, Baldwin emerged with a sense of renewed purpose about the necessity of pushing forward in the face of disillusionment and despair.
In the story of Baldwin's crucible, Glaude suggests, we can find hope and guidance through our own after times, this Trumpian era of shattered promises and white retrenchment. Mixing biography-drawn partially from newly uncovered interviews-with history, memoir, and trenchant analysis of our current moment, Begin Again is Glaude's endeavor, following Baldwin, to bear witness to the difficult truth of race in America today. It is at once a searing exploration that lays bare the tangled web of race, trauma, and memory, and a powerful interrogation of what we all must ask of ourselves in order to call forth a new America.
Eddie S. Glaude Jr. is a scholar who speaks to the black and blue in America. His most well-known books, Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul, and In a Shade of Blue: Pragmatism and the Politics of Black America, take a wide look at black communities and reveal complexities, vulnerabilities, and opportunities for hope. He is the William S. Tod Professor of Religion and African American Studies and chair of the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University.
Cornel R. West is Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard Divinity School. He is best known for his classics Race Matters and Democracy Matters, and his memoir, Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud. He is the host with Tricia Rose of a new podcast, The Tight Rope.

Maya Marshall holds her own with the doctors. Thank you for your thoughtful questions, Maya. And thank you Dr. Glaude and Dr. West for your work and your wisdom. This poor white girl from Cleveland, a product of 1950s and 60s racism and segregation, greatly appreciate your work and that of great black women writers, like Audre Lorde, who helped me face my fear and stand strong in the world of academia where elitism can get the best of us if we let it and my own unmasking of white privilege.

What a privilege to be with these three bright, witty, magnanimous artists, listening to them share their love of James Baldwin! Jackie Wilson’s lyric “Your love is lifting me higher than I’ve ever been lifted before.....” is the perfect background to this unique experience. Wouldn’t it have been magical to have spent time with the beloved “Jimmy”?

Yes, I am a 'Coltrane woman'. I came to understand what that truly means a few years ago. My life has been the constant manifestation of "hope" and a "Love Supreme" my recently deceased Mom (yes, from Covid) (and whose maiden name is actually "Hope" 😇) tried her best, damn near daily, to get me to recognize. And through this, I reached (and continue to) my hand to lift up others, particularly youth. If only more would do the same. Love beyond words, but in creatively profound actions that empower from a values and ethics practice. God bless you Professor West for the years of affirmations, Dr. Glaude for acknowledging grief and regret in this pandemic, the teachings of Baldwin, and Haymarket for your platform. 🙏🏼✊🏽🖤 RIP Mommy 5/5/20 & Dad 5/14/20. ❤

How can you build right relationships with a fragmented and selfishness that is programmed in our minds, and more than that how to go beyond images that stored in our minds, including our own image. We may work for common good, if we can see that our self interest is included in common interest, so we must act in interest humanity first, maybe there we can see the action of Love. But true love cannot be biased, or prejudice, or selfish, and true "Love is a path less land", quote from J. Krishnamurti.

Chris Hedges disparages hope and sees in hope escapism. That just proves Brother Hedges is not Black. Brother Hedges does not need hope because he is not hopeless. To understand true hope, ask the hopeless. Ask James Baldwin, for whom hope is a verb, not a drug, something to be practiced, not ingested Hope must be invented everyday.

That is so deep..so devastatingly true. I admire Chris Hedges' work & understand his deep pathos given his experiences working in desperate, war-torn areas, but to be Black in America is something that falls outside his understanding..alwayd felt that Chris needs to listen to Jazz, Blues & Hip Hop to get a taste - a FEEL- of what being Black in America is like. Music played a critical role in Baldwin's philosophy & artistic output.

The evil seed in the beginning was the intentional near genocide of Native People who truly knew how to live 14,000 years on Turtle Island. 2020 is the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower settler ship slamming into their homelands and dropping of Pilgrim colonists. We all need to look at the communal way Natives governed and how our brand of democracy was born of it . Peoples who were of this land knew how to treat all as one. And look who is the presumed leader of this land during these turbulent times. Can't wait to read and share this book with my tribal enrolled son who studies history in his senior year. I think a big problem is Americans have no concept of history. There is no understanding of how things got to where they are today because it occurred over multiple generations, and most Americans, well white Americans at least, only seem to concern themselves with their own generation. People's sense of time is so compressed they cannot even see the big picture. Whatever idea of history they have is mostly an invention conceived in the present. This is, IMHO, why this new rise of racial animosity caught white people off guard. That's from my perspective anyways. It's just really hard to teach people to love when there is no understanding. America is really good at sweeping disturbing/inconvenient things under the rug and pretending they went away.

It's less of an indictment of voters than it is of the *system* within which vomited up such an atrocious human being. A chronic choice of lesser evils gave us compounded evil in DT. Wouldn't have had such a dilemma had the DNC not blatantly aligned against to cheat (twice!!) Bernie Sanders, who would have crushed Drumpf. But it was Her Turn. So here we are again: with another Neoliberal corporate sellout that we're all expected to rally behind. But keep believing that we live in the Greatest Democracy In The World™. When in reality our political system is an auction house to the highest bidders. Baldwin's amazing oeuvre is a scathing critique of the inextricable link between capitalism and racism. But today's Democratic party cronies will only pay it lip service, appear in Kente cloth for photo opp's and agree to paint BLM on streets. As West was saying, there needs to be way more of a critique of the black intellectual refusal to condemn these pantomime gestures in lieu of real substantive policy change addressing chronic poverty, shredding of the social safety net, lack of healthcare, police brutality, defunding and abolishing police, prison industrial complex, school to prison pipeline, all of the New Jim Crow, etc. The Democratic Party has *no interest* in addressing *any of this*. Which is why people are in the streets. Because now white people get it too. #AmericanRevolution2020 #BlackLivesMatter #WeAreThe99% #AbolishThePolice #CapitalismKills #SocialismSaves Thank you, Haymarket! Amazing job with these discussions!
