The Labrador Retriever, often abbreviated to Labrador, is a breed of retriever dog that was developed from imported Canadian fishing dogs. Labs descend from the Newfoundland Dog and the St. John’s Water Dog in Newfoundland, Canada. I have always had all sorts of dogs from free to $2000. I love them. Had them all my life. Always wanted to breed. Now that I got my farm house and an empty nester. I'm seriously thinking about it!

I learned a lot with your tips. My dogs are not register, but on DNA TEST the are 100% pure Golden Retriever. Now I know that was a big mistake. The price I will ask for my puppies those not going to be great. Tooooo late. I love them and they are pure. Jajajaja thanks

Chin up my friend! Great dogs are great dogs. As with most things, they are worth whatever someone else is willing to pay for them. Be ready to educate your customers about their value and you should do fine! 👍

Thank you for the video, i have a question about microchips, you mention to microchip your dogs, do this includes all the ones in the litters as well or just the ones you use for your breeding program. Thank you

We put microchips in all the dogs in our breeding program. We also chip any puppy that’s going on a plane. Some breeders chip all their litters all the time as a matter of policy. It’s not that expensive and you can add the cost of it to the sale price of the pups. Starting this fall we will be chipping ALL puppies here at MLL.

I’ve got a beautiful male named Johnny Cash. I don’t know if you know Lisa Montoya but his sire is Abarth. Im excited that I found your channel and I’m eager to learn all I can because I want to get a female and begin breeding. I’ve known Lisa for 40 years but I don’t think she is real happy about the fact I got a puppy with breeding rights from a person she loaned Abarth to stud with a contract that stipulated no breeding rights. Where are you located?

Great videos. Wondering about breeding genetics. Do you need to buy a male from a different breeder than the female so that they are not related? Or is it like some livestock where the mother can get breed by her offspring? If they can’t be related then you just have that non-related pair and that’s your breeding stock? Could you make a video explaining this?

Great questions! The short answer is that you want a non related pair. Genetic diversity minimizes the risk of un wanted recessive traits surfacing. I’ll do a video soon explaining why. -Alan

Thanks also a video on your setup for housing the dogs. Have been trying to find some information on what breeds can tolerate living outdoors. I understand there will be times they need to come inside, extreme weather, giving birth etc. but looking for a comprehensive list of what I’ll need to get to setup nice living quarters and arrangements for keeping dogs separate. You do a great good getting the information out in an easy to understand format!

i got my puppy from a good hobby breeder, or at least i thought so! he was very helpfull and even picked out a puppy for me that fits my character and living situation. BUT what i figured out years later was shocking, i met ppl that had my dogs siblings and together we discovered that the parents of our dogs are half siblings. Thats the reason why all of our dogs are so terrible sick. 6 of 9 dogs already died before the age of 8. They had to be put down because of massive health issues. The "breeder" we got our dogs from got the parents from a FCI licencesed dog breeder that also is a vet. But that breeder didnt know that the man would use the half siblings for breeding otherwise i think she wouldnt have sold them to this man that started hobby breeding. At least i found out that my dog has a very royal bloodline with multiple international champions :3 and yes she is super sick and very expensive in vet bills but i regret nothing i love my dog so much! But i wouldnt make that mistake again, i would wanna see the dogs parents pedigree so i know they are not related in any way. Oh and you should check the dogs for genetic diseases before you breed them!

Could you answer a question? From the time of mating one of your dames to knowing that she is pregnant what’s the normal time? For you to find out that she’s actually with puppies. Thank you

Great question! About 3 weeks into a pregnancy we usually see nipples starting to swell and pink up. There can also be a drop in energy level and morning sickness at this time. There is a simple blood test you or your vet can do as well to confirm. Hope that helps! -Alan

@@must_love_labs thank you. I hope you might independently advise me. I put a deposit down in January for a potential puppy that was to be breed in February. This happened, a few weeks back I asked the breeder is the dame pregnant, at that point the breeder said it was too early to tell at one month and I would know immediately when the breeder knew. 2 more weeks have passed, would one not know by now there are puppies on the way? It is almost the like getting ready for a new born this June. I would appreciate any insights you might give me. I dont want to nag the breeder but I am getting concerned. I am enjoying your videos. Thank you.

@@Pipe-organ-recordings you just laid out a 6 week time line. With Labradors, 6 weeks after mating I would know if my dog was pregnant. It would be visible for one thing. The entire gestation period is 9 weeks. If I had any doubts about it I would have already scheduled an ultrasound. This could just be a communication issue. If you have a deposit in on a puppy don’t feel bad about getting on weekly updates. Nagging would be a daily thing. I hope that helps! Glad you are enjoying our videos! 👍

It’s ok to verify the dates on the timeline with the Breeder. Here are the dates to consider...1: Day or week of the breeding. 2: Date pups are born (whelped). This will be about 9 weeks from the breeding. 3: Date puppy will be ready for pick up or shipment. This should be not less than 8 weeks from birth. Airlines won’t let’s pups fly younger than 8 weeks for good reason. So the standard for going to their fur-ever home is 8 weeks minimum. My pups go to the vet on or about their eighth week for health certification and then they can leave my care. Not before. I’ll do a video about this topic soon. Hope that helps! - Alan

Dammit I bought both my male and female from non registered litters unfortunately. I mean they always seem to sell and at full price too because they are high quality animals and people can see that... BUT. It's a matter of professionalism for me i really want that little piece of paper that confirms the blood lines. It doesn't make a huge difference for the finances but still. If anyone's reading this comment be sure to buy a registered blood line from the beginning and dont make the mistake i made...

Lots of people start out that way, then as they get experienced, they retire their unregistered stock and move to breeding registered stock.
