Great video! Thank you very much. It certainly helps having the right tools. Today I tried to change a few caps on my Slingbox HD and even though I thought I had the right tools -- Radio Shack 25w soldering iron and desoldering tool, braided copper, I still couldn't get them off without overheating the board. I think I need a little more heat (40w perhaps) and a better solder sucker. Those rubber ones 'don't' suck compared to those pump-up solder-suckers that I've seen in YT videos. If I get the right tools and use some of your other tricks I should be fine. Anyway, thanks again for a very straight-forward and easy to understand tutorial. :thumbs up: /subscribed

Thank you for this video. Never needed to do more than solder a few wires together. But now I needed to solder in headers to a tiny circuit board. I was afraid of ruining it! Your video explained so much! Heat the pin, apply the solder NOT to the iron but to the pin. I practiced once and then tried it. Worked perfectly the first time. Thanks!

Something else to mention: if you don't have any other heat sources to shrink your heat shrink tubing, you can use the metal shaft of your soldering iron. I had to do that because I was in a pinch and it worked flawlessly.

My favorite thing isn't that some English think Americans are speaking English wrong, but that they are speaking it right. If you honestly believe that you aren't speaking English differently then they were 50 to 100 years ago... let alone a thousand. Languages evolve and adapt. Good Video. My only critique is that you are too aware about "comments" for your video. It is sad that people need to worry about trolls and idiots when all you are trying to do is share knowledge and experience. My suggestion would be to just do a good video and disregard what other people say. If you are knowledgeable or are an expert in something, don't let other people interject themselves into your video.

To answer the question someone left as to why fresh solder works to remove old solder.....because solder, when heated and in "liquid" form, is attracted to itself. Just like Mercury,water or any substance in liquid form. Also, when solder is hot, it's easier to get the old solder hot quicker because the heat is spread out over a larger area and so the solder gets attracted to each other. Example, if you put a 70 yr. old woman and a 25 yr. old next to each other and have a 70 yr. old man choose with whom to be, HE'LL CHOOSE THE 25yr. OLD! Why? Because she's young,more energetic,easier to get hot,more cute(shinier) and will be able to make him feel young again! As for the 70yr. Old, she'll be dull,slow to get hot,slower on the move and won't be able to make his components work properly. So it'll just ruin his project. I hope I've been able to give a clarifying answer to the question.

Why I didn't watch this before trying to fix my TV is beyond me. You would have saved me a good half hour. Very informative, thank you.

Use RMA flux while doing this, always. The flux located at the core of the solder is never enough. Just enough is there so the solder wire itself can flow evenly. Still, you should always use more flux. (I work in Class 3 for Military and commercial. Flux is your friend.)

With all due respect, I really hope you that's not how you really solder THT components for professional purposes. The soldering is supposed to go penetrate through the hole to form a good connection and it will also reduce vibrations and the excess solder is not supposed to make a concave dome nor a triangle, but to form the shape of a volcano that gradually go down to the base. The quick upper motion is also useless, check the specification for what temperature you should be using, that would explain the upper motion and the color of your solders... When it comes down to through-hole components you need to have a beautiful volcano shape, a certain brillance on your solder (pure tin doesn't shine though) and penetration of solder.

Love how you say "if you're poor" in relation to electrical tape usage, and then proceed to use a cigarette lighter to shrink the heat shrink tubing 😂 when someone who's "not poor" would use a hot air gun. Irony.
