In continuation of the first 2 parts of the Beginner's Guide for JMRI and LocoNet, in this part 3 video I will be showing you how you can bring everything together and control your model railroad and trains from your smartphone - irrespective of whether you are an apple user or android user.
The objective of the series is of course to show how easy it is to start controlling your layout with JMRI, and also provide a complete guide to get started with the tool. Though I am using Digitrax LocoNet, the topics covered in this particular episode really is universal and is applicable for any DCC system that you might use. In addition, these videos also cover the basics required to advance to more complex topics like automation, block detection and signalling.

Hello Thank you for the series great insight to what Jmri can do for you even in small layouts. I thoroughly enjoyed it and very informative, you explained it very well with your demonstration. I have just set up a programme track (separate from the layout) with my NCE power cab and usb interface to an old computer and got it to work ok.. Since watching your video demo have connected an old phone via engine driver and got it to work with decoder pro to set up my locos. You have now got me thinking about connecting it to the main layout for wi if throttles and who knows... Again thank you Keith...👍

Thank you Keith! I am really glad to hear that this series was helpful and inspired you to try it out. I am meaning to get back to the rest of the advanced topic for sometime but other things are keeping me distracted, hopefully I'll be able to get to it soon. You should try all of this with engine driver for android. It only has a free version that comes with everything from consisting to track power and throwing turnouts

Great stuff! I have subscribed...Can you switch control of the loco between the app, JMRI *and* also the Digitrax DSC-50 Controller?

Hi, Kaustav, I'm preparing to embark on the journey that is building my first DCC layout. Your videos are going to help me get setup into routing control through my PC. I have one simple question: what brand and model of motor are you using to operate your turnouts?

Many thanks for this. I have mine all set up with WiThrottle. After getting a locomotive running it stops when I switch to the web server section of WiThrottle to switch turnouts. How do I get the locos to keep running when looking at the control panel on the phone?

@@TrainsandDioramas Thanks so much! It's seems really odd and compromises the usefulness of WiThrottle. I'd like to be able to switch between the throttle tab and web server tab without the trains being interrupted so I can access the JMRI control panel via the WiThrottle Webserver. I'll watch for your reply. Thank you for looking into this!

Late reply but I've found I have to "release" the loco from WiThrottle before I switch to another screen or lock the phone.

I can't open Engine Driver pass the (Server Address and Port and then Connect). I tried every port and server! The DCC-EX is running and 192.168.4.1 Port=2560 seems OK. I’m running DCC-EX on Chrome and JMRI on android tablet. Help!

Hello, thak you for your videos. I could drive my train with JMRI and Withrottle seeing your videos. Now I would like to know where I can learn about detection with JMRI. I have Digitrax BDL168 detectors and I want that JMRI stop train entering to occupied sections of the track. Where can I read and learn about it? Thank you and sorry for my english; here in Argentina we speak in spanish. Daniel

Thank you, and I am glad that you found these videos helpful. Don’t worry, English is not my first language either. I think the best place to stay is the JMRI user group: groups.io/g/jmriusers. There are a lot of material and many helpful and experienced people there. I have been meaning to complete the series with block detention etc. but never found time. I will perhaps start a new series later this year to cover all the topics. Till then JMRI user group should be a very good place to start

Hey How did you hook up phone to pc, was it through RR cirkits or your Jmri On your pc? I already bought a digitrax lnwi that connects to my WiFi, so there is no way to use it for jmri panel without a usb connection on lnwi?

It's shown in the video - if you watch the full thing, step by step guide is provided. LNWI is a direct interface with your command station through WiFi that enables you to use your phone as a throttle, it has nothing to do with JMRI. Hope this helps.

Hello, that's great news for me. But something I do not get together at all. Please tell me where the power for the railroad comes from. I still need a command station, booster and transformer? Or not? Can the Computer power stand the amperage of running two or three locomotives at a time? And what will happen in case of short circuit?

Hi - yes, you still need a command station, booster and transformer. The power and amperage is handled by the DCC command station /booster, a layout doesn't run using USB port voltage. For short circuit issue you need use short circuit management hardware. Hope this helps. Cheers! Kaustav

@@TrainsandDioramas Thank you very much Kaustav. Not easy for a DCC beginner like me. My impression is, that too much is been taken for granted around DCC. But I need more a kind of help like in these "... for Dummies"-books. So far, I figured out that a Lenz LZV200 would be sufficient for my small On30 Layout and wireless train-control would be a very nice thing. Again, thanks for your quick response and useful help.

@@TrainsandDioramas my train layout is in a shed about 100 feet away form wifi with a power meter that blocks all wifi signal so I need a separate non internet wifi set up just for my railroad

southern 207 hobbies you should be able to set up the router to broadcast on a discreet WiFi network name and password, and connect devices without internet access. I used the same theory for file sharing without access to the web. Do you have a spare router?
