6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for KZfaq. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.
Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free KZfaq Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!
And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on KZfaq.
I do online lessons too. Email me : info@song-bike.com
This is how you unlock a LOT of secrets on the guitar : learn the notes on your fat 6th string, the heavy E string. This will make ALL the difference whe it comes to playing barre chords, power chords, blues scales, pentatonic scales....EVERYTHING! The fretboard can be intimidating, I know ! This video shows you the best way to begin. In fact, if you ONLY learn the notes on one string, this is the ONE!

Jonathan explains things in such a clear manner. He keeps things simple. Anybody else would talk about scales using all six strings. But he establishes a pattern which is the same across the bottom 3 strings. And voila you know 7 scales well over 3 strings which is amazing progress for a one hour lesson. It's his ability to break up lessons in bite size chunks but also with information that is so essential to basing a good foundation in music that will last you a lifetime that makes his lessons so good.

The most important subject to anyone that is wanting to learn guitar. I had lessons and never took much notice to this, I always just wanted to shred new songs every week. However, I look back on this now (in a band) and realize how much of this is so important to any guitar player wanting to write songs, playing songs, new songs, band practice etc. On KZfaq you won't find a better video explaining this than this video. Thank You

John, thank you for these videos. I am a beginner that has been working my way through the chord progressions, and went looking for strum patterns. This is where I found your videos and they are eye openers. I am in the Guitars4Vets program at the local veterans facility and have just passed the first basic portion. They gave me a brand new Yamaha acoustic guitar for graduation and now I am looking to advance. Your videos are what I have been looking for. THANK YOU!

+Song Bike - jkehew1 The web page is www.guitars4vets.org/ and it is a national movement. There are dozens of local chapters and there may be one or more in whatever city you are located in. I go every week to our local group here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. facebook.com/Guitars-For-Vets-Grand-Rapids-MI-162268163802079/ I was here but not in the pictures as I am not as accomplished as the musicians in the pics. With the instruction you give in the videos, I bet there will be a lot of really happy players out there.

Just terrific instruction. You really have the knack for teaching. I would really like to hear you explain the big theory behind the string setup. I notice that the tumings are a fourth apart; I know that chords are based on getting the root note and it's third and fifth together. I suspect therefore that there is some brilliant reason for tuning those strings as they are to allow the player in the know to rapidly "see" those chords among the clutter. What is it? Pleeeease!
@jkehew1
@jkehew1 8 жыл бұрын
+NMranchhand Hi NM, I fully understand your question but I don't have an answer. The banjo and the dobro are tuned to produce the root, third and fifth "instantly," with no effort by the fretting hand whatsoever. This is known as "open tuning." This makes a lot of sense because harmonious sounds are the "default," unlike the guitar where you have to work to make things sound good! Most of us invest so much time mastering the most useful chords and chord shapes that we assume that's how the guitar has to be. Other people retune the guitar and essentially relearn everything. Not as crazy as it sounds !

Hi John. As a beginner I have benefitted immensely from your online videos. I watched your video on The Major Scale. I liked the "WWWHWWWH" sequence on the fretboard to get the major scale. In this video on the fat string you are using a different scale? By the way, in your Major Scale video should there be an additional W at the start on the whiteboard to make it an Octave?
@jkehew1
@jkehew1 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, TT ! Watch out - you have one too many Ws in your comment above. WWHWWWH. Each represents the distance (or "interval") between two scale notes. 8 notes (an octave) have 7 intervals in between - make sense ?

Luv the lessons but when u play the c Barre chord it looks different to some pics iv seen of a c Barre chord the pic iv seen has a barre then the next fingers look like a open c shape
@jkehew1
@jkehew1 9 жыл бұрын
darthroon1 sounds like we are talking about two different things. You are describing a barre chord that is based on the open position C major chord. So it resembles that C chord but the actual name depends on where you slide it up and down the neck. I believe I was talking about a barre chord based on the E major shape (or possibly A major? it's been a while) that sounds like a C major chord because of where the barre is located. Does that make sense?
