Great stuff. Here is what Rich explained in the video in written form. ------------------------------------------------------- Practice Routine 1: Eighth Note Subdivision ------------------------------------------------------- Objective: To develop a strong sense of groove by mastering the eighth note subdivision. 1. Setting Up: - Set your metronome to 80 BPM. - Listen to the quarter note beats (1, 2, 3, 4). 2. Counting Eighth Notes: - Imagine a bouncing ball hitting the floor on every downbeat. - Count aloud: "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and." - Notice the downbeat ("1, 2, 3, 4") when the ball hits the floor, and the upbeat ("and") when the ball comes up. 3. Foot Tapping: - Tap your foot to the rhythm. - Downbeat: When your toes hit the ground. - Upbeat: When your toes come up. - Count aloud with the foot taps: "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and." 4. Checking Timing: - Ensure your foot tapping is synchronised with the metronome. - Adjust if you are rushing or slowing down. ------------------------------------------------------- Practice Routine 2: Exploring Eighth Note Patterns ------------------------------------------------------- Objective: To create grooves by experimenting with different eighth note patterns. 1. Basic Eighth Note Pattern: - Play a single note on your bass (e.g., G on the third fret of the E string). - Play the eighth note pattern: "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and." 2. Simple Rhythm Variation: - Play the first downbeat and the first two upbeats: "1 and 2 and." - Continue this pattern: "1 and 2 and 1 and 2 and." 3. Switching Notes: - Alternate between G (third fret of the E string) and open E string. - Play each note for two bars: - 2 bars on G. - 2 bars on open E. ------------------------------------------------------- Practice Routine 3: Advanced Rhythm Variation ------------------------------------------------------- Objective: To further develop groove by using more complex rhythmic patterns. 1. New Rhythmic Pattern: - Play the first downbeat, skip the first upbeat, then play the second and third upbeats: "1 and (skip) and and." 2. Counting the Pattern: - Count aloud: "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and." - Play the pattern on one note (G): "1 and (skip) and and." 3. Applying the Pattern: - Play the pattern while alternating between G (third fret of the E string) and open E string: - 2 bars on G. - 2 bars on open E. ------------------------------------------------------- Practice Routine 4: Combination of Downbeat and Upbeats ------------------------------------------------------- Objective: To practice different combinations of downbeat and upbeats to enhance groove skills. 1. Combination Patterns: - Start with the downbeat, then play the third and fourth upbeats: "1 and (skip) and and." - Count aloud: "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and." 2. Playing the Combination: - Play the combination pattern on one note (G): "1 and (skip) and and." - Alternate between G (third fret of the E string) and open E string: - 2 bars on G. - 2 bars on open E. ------------------------------------------------------- Tips for Practicing: ------------------------------------------------------- - Focus on accuracy before speed. - Use a metronome consistently. - Start slowly and gradually increase the tempo as you become more comfortable. - Keep practicing each routine until you feel confident and in control of the groove.

Thank you so much, David. Believe me, if I had the time, I would post a new video every week. I got home a week ago from a Canadian tour with a great band called Avataar. But the morning after I arrived home, I tested positive for Covid. I'm still recovering but doing much better than I was a few days ago. Thank you for watching!

This one was targeting the beginners yet masterfully done to the point where I truly got something out of it. Ya done it again. TY. Pocket possibilities. It's possible to be a bit flashy and not step on toes and still stay in the pocket. That's what i got.

This to my 66 year old ears should be titled 'Advanced Lesson 10: The Ultimate Guide to GROOVE' - point being that yes, it's so simple to play with youtube guidance but remember we never had this kind of beginners lessons when we/I were/was beginners.... And I've only got to 0:20 before commenting 😊 Hoping there's some sense there!
