I (and probably other people too :p ) would love to see these stages in action, how they actually look like while working on a project. By that I mean that it would be amazing if you could make a video where apart from talking about/explaining them we could also see examples taken from real life situations where you are being a part of a certain stage, be it music, floey, adr or mixing. Being a future filmschool sound student your channel is excellent for me and others alike because the level of explaination of techniques, your overall knowledge and experience is through the roof but in videos like this I wish there could also be some "actual work" examples. Kind of like some "behind the scenes" of movies/shows/games where you can see how the sound people acutally work + your explanation of each stage would be unreal. Thanks for hearing me out and thanks for your amazing channel!

I was just asked by a director to do sound engineering for him because I was the location sound mixer. With little knowledge of how to do sound in post, besides what I have done in the past in the actual editing software, not in pro tools or otherwise. This clears up a lot and really gets me excited to learn and hopefully with a bit of research I can accomplish what he asks me to do!

You're doing amazing work here Alex, thank you! Question: if a picture editor doesn't use all the recorded tracks, but a mixdown, how do you get all the tracks in sync? Given that the slate has already been cut, and the takes are probably all mixed up etc. Thanks again!

Can you please make a video about how to get audio levels perfect the first time when recording?

I have always wondered about how ADR works. Every once in a while, sometimes in fairly big budget films, I'll notice an ADR line stick out like a sore thumb. It seems obvious they were using a fancy studio mic in a sound booth rather than the boom or lav they were recorded with on set. Would it make more sense to at least match the style of microphone? Or is this just an error of not matching the quality of the sound properly? How do you even match two wildly different mics in different environments?
@axk
@axk 3 жыл бұрын
This is actually one of the hardest things to do in post, and something dialog mixers spend the most time on. On most big features, mics are matched (both boom and lav), and then you have to try and recreate the same space as production with reverb, and the same environmental factors with EQ. There are some more complex tricks beyond that, but to be fair it is extremely challenging to do even for very experienced mixers.

@@axk Fascinating. I guess I just remember seeing a lot of behind the scenes ADR of actors in sound booths with giant condenser microphones. But that may have been from years ago and maybe those weren't huge productions. Or my memory is faulty. Still, I think this would be a cool topic for a video explaining the ADR process and the matching process. Also, I'm thinking there is probably loads of ADR that I never realized is ADR and only the bad ADR ever stands out.

This is nothing in comparison to Alex's work, but even on my very limited YT repair videos I've noticed that if I add a line, in the same space, with the same mic, it doesn't sound the same. Sometimes it's because I'm just talking differently and other times because I was stood up and not sat on the floor or leaning over like the original shoot. I'm learning, mostly the hard way and this channel is really interesting.

To make that “super proyect” that you talk about, do you merge the different OMF/AAFs in one, or how do you combine all those individual tasks?

Hey Alex, I'm always wondering what is really the difference between using a high pass filter on a microphone (like the RE20) VS applying a high pass filter in post on your preferred DAW.

Hello Alex! I would like to kindly ask you a real quick question that bugs me. Does it make any difference in quality of recording if I use: a. A lav mic connected to an iphone (levels set right with an app) b. The same lav mic connected to a field recorder such as the Tascam DR10L? Thank you!!

Does the mixer do any eq or compression on the finished music mix?
@axk
@axk 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! It’s called buss processing (or bus, can be spelled either way). It’s when you apply overall processing to a whole mix or group of elements in a mix.

Thank you! I wasn’t sure since I was working on a mix and did some eq cuts to the fit VO, and he got a bit annoyed like they artist and engineer worked hard on the song. I was just trying to help the balance as it’s a very dynamic track
