READ PINNED COMMENT FOR SET 10
Regarding Set 11 (and all future sets tbh): certain numbers or details will inevitably be subject to change as the game is iterated on and receives updates. However, I created this guide with the intention of focusing on fundamental skills that are applicable for beginners regardless of unique set mechanics (such as Legends or Headliner).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THE RELEASE OF SET 10: Some of the specific numbers I've given in this video ARE subject to change in future sets. For example, it was confirmed today that the level cap would be raised from 9 to 10, and that they would be adjusting shop odds accordingly. While we don't yet know how exactly the shop odds will be changed, this also has the potential to affect what level is optimal for reroll comps. Mortdog also mentioned the possibility of adjusting the Champion Pool for each cost in the future, with the 4 cost pool being adjusted from 12 copies to 11. Legends will also NOT be returning in Set 10, and portals will remain, but we won't be seeing portals as disruptive as The Sump or House Lightshield. Furthermore, they've replaced 2 items, RFC and Night Harvester, with Red Buff and Steadfast Heart respectively. Some existing items also received balance changes. They've also added the new core set 10 mechanic called Headliners. A Headliner is a unit that is bought for 3 times the standard cost but is immediately a 2-star unit, and gets a "Headliner buff" (most champs just get extra AD or HP or AP, some have more interesting effects). Headliners will also contribute an extra +1 for one of their traits. Despite these adjustments, almost all of the underlying concepts presented in this video should still apply to future sets. Managing your Item Economy, timing your power spikes, etc. will always be important skills in TFT, but the specific numbers may require adjustments in how it is executed. I'm not sure yet if I will be creating an updated video for Set 10, since it would be very time consuming to replace all of the clips and visuals, even with only minor adjustments to the actual content. My intention in creating this guide in the first place was to give people a primer on the fundamentals of TFT while mentioning as little set-specific information as possible (although examples are sometimes needed, of course). Personally, I feel like I've done at least a decent job at this, and redoing the most time-consuming part of the process just to present the same information as before seems a bit exhausting tbh. Regardless, thanks for watching the video and reading this wall of text! EDIT (November 14, 2023): There have been a lot of changes to the PBE almost every day until now, but ALL of the unit pool sizes have now changed (sizes are now 22/20/17/10/9 for 1/2/3/4/5 cost units). The set 10 mechanic, Headliners, also received a HUGE change this morning where a headliner will only appear if at least half of the unit's pool is still available. Follow me! I started playing in the very beginning, but didn’t stick around. I learned the basics of the underlying mechanics going on, but that’s it. Came back for a super short stint a while ago, didn’t learn the game really, just played one specific reroll comp and got bored. Now I’m picking it up but for real this time, and yeah, true beginner resources are so scarce. Everyone seems to give such meta specific advice, I really just want the basic fundamentals. Thanks for this.

Hey, I'm super old and slow as far as LoL players go... Was a plat back in 2012 or so but dropped off and havent played much at all since 2013 or 2014.... Absolutely insane how much things have changed with champ redesigns and stuff. This seems like a great compromise to get my League fix in again! Sadly life has gotten in the way and I cant commit the time needed to play even normals in LoL. Thanks for the video, maybe I'll run into you in game some day :).

I just started playing this today and I have no idea what I'm doing. Every hero seems the same to me as I don't know what each one is good for and what kind of team they fit into. Plus, I don't know who I should be buying and if I should just be focusing on trying to get heroes with similar traits. It's confusing and I end up just having a bunch of pretty much useless heroes and my team is garbage even though I do try to get heroes of the same traits. That kind of stuff is what I'm trying to learn about. I get the basic stuff, but trying to build my team and what heroes do what is what's stumping me.

For things like that, one shortcut is to use the stats website I mention at the end tactics.tools/ which lists out common comps that place well in Diamond+ lobbies. They'll also recommend items for certain units, so you can discern who your main tanks and carries are for each comp. Robinsongz's TFT handbook (www.tfthandbook.com/) also has a list of comps, although it is manually curated and updated, so it isn't always up-to-date (right now he is busy preparing for/playing in NA regionals). Perhaps the more "proper" way to go about it is to just read each champion's abilities and all of the traits (very boring and not always straightforward tbh). From there you can determine what champions might like certain kinds of items (for example: Xayah probably doesn't need Infinity Edge, which allows abilities to crit, because her trait, Vanquishers, already does this for her). This may not lead to optimal items, but it is a good skill to practice as well. With regards to traits, it's hard to make a blanket statement, but IN GENERAL the idea is to have 1 main offensive trait to play around (Vanquishers, Gunners, Sorcerers, etc.) and then fill in extra spots with units that share other traits. In the case of Sorcerers, Taric is a Sorcerer that also possesses the traits Targon and Bastion. Bastion is a defensive trait that provides units with Armor and MR, so we can add Shen, who has Ionia/Bastion/Invoker traits. If we are able to find another Invoker such as Soraka (Targon/Invoker) or Karma (Ionia/Invoker), we can also provide our Sorcerers with more MP over time to cast more often. How "worth it" each trait (or even each break point) is will depend on the meta and balance of the traits. Personally, I would recommend a mixture of looking at stats and reading things thoroughly. Maybe pick 1-3 comps to try out, and read the abilities of all of the unit's and their traits as you buy them so you can better understand WHY the stats favor certain items or unit pairings, or why a certain comp could benefit from activating certain traits. It can be hard for a beginner to tell how much value something actually provides, so using stats to figure out what's actually good is a good starting point so you can begin to analyze on your own what specifically makes it good. I know this is a really long response, but I hope it was helpful. Let me know if you have more questions as well! Always happy to talk and discuss.

Sorry, another thing I forgot to mention: when you're in this stage of learning the game, I think it's SUPER important to actually pay attention and watch what is happening during your fights. This lets you understand where damage is coming from, where CC is coming from, or generally just "what units do what" as you were saying. Might seem a little obvious, but I feel like TFT is a game where it can be easy to zone out since it is way more chill of a game, so I figured it was worth mentioning just in case.

@@fyzzl670 Yeah I have been watching, but all I been seeing is my random ass teams getting their butts kicked lol. But I actually appreciate the super long comments cause that means you took the time and put in the effort to try and teach me and help me understand what I need to do. So thank you for that. So it looks like I need to go and do some research on the heroes and team comps if I wanna have any chance at improving.
@fyzzl670

Yeah, no problem! Also, yeah TFT is just a game that is going to involve a lot of reading to learn by nature of the game. It should be fairly manageable though if you just stick to a few comps at first to get a feel for everything and give you grounds to apply the more abstract concepts. Good luck!

I didn't want to recommend specific units to pick because not only does that vary from set to set, but even patch to patch. At the end of the video, I recommend resources like tactics.tools and tfthandbook that have lists of comps that are updated each patch. Since this video's creation, there is now also tftacademy.com created by Frodan and Dishsoap. If you want to follow a less rigid gameplan you can identify the important carries and tanks of a comp and fill out the traits as you see fit based on what you hit.
