I have watched TONSSSS of vocal coaches and videos and have had personal lessons, and you're the best. I learned about compression from another teacher on KZfaq, and I know he's right, but it's like he doesn't actually say anything or provide simple exercises like you. You're so simple and to the point. I just sang along with you playing the piano, and it was great! Like having a private lesson at home :D

Thank you for these exercises Jeff. I didn't know what vocal adduction was until I found a video about it, and now I see that you have them too. I really need more power in my voice, so these should help.

Hey Jeff, could you do a warm up video for a basso profundo voice like mine? You could imagine it would be hard to find warm ups that go to my lowest note of Bb1-A1 😂 Thanks, and nice video!

Hi Jeff! So I was wondering; I still feel like I either do these exercises with a breathy voice, or my tongue and throat feels really tense. Do you have any tips on how to get in that perfect space of balance between lifting the soft palate while staying relaxed? Thank you so much for making relavant, vocally healthy content for users like me!
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 2 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for your comment. Thanks for watching and thanks for your kind words too! I would suggest that you focus on short vowel exercises. I believe that those are in this video but you'll also find them in this playlist: kzfaq.info/sun/PL2mQP7sE6PHg8wjZBjfJ3HGVqjxBF2swE Please don't recoil at the title of that playlist if you go to it. Vocal fold adduction should be labeled as a fundamental technique. Without that, all the palate manipulation in the world won't result in a tone that isn't breathy. I hope that helps! Jeff

@@JeffRolka Update: I've been doing this and... I can FINALLY belt. It is glottal but not "glottal shock" or in an unhealthy way, just buzzy. Still having trouble breaking the habit of signing breathy, or like "Huhh". I have to correct myself constantly (because I formed a bad habit of singing breathily all the time) which is super annoying, but I am improving so much which is really good!! Just wanted to let you know that all the work that I'm sure goes into making these videos is really helping someone like me fix their technique 😁!

Hi Jeff. I’ve found that when I put my hands over my head in the bow like you demonstrate in some videos, that I get better expansion, more power, clarity and freedom. But as soon as I bring my arms down I lose the benefits. Do you have any suggestions for how to maintain the expansion when not doing the bow?
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 4 жыл бұрын
You're halfway there. What you're noticing is proper engagement and expansion, where the abdominal muscles have proper access to the diaphragm. That's really awesome! How do we maintain it when standing normally? Focused practice. Alternate your exercises between hands overhead and at yours sides, more like a marionette, though. Go back and forth and work to get the same engagement. It's a practice but it's worth it. Best, Jeff

Do you think one can get or should try to achieve a good, a very firm vocal cord closure without training much? As a beginner? Such that no excess air would leak during singing ever again?

It seems like an impossible task for me to keep it up all the time and my throat feels constricted when I try to keep vocal cords adducted. But I was taught that this is the first thing to learn and otherwise there is no point supporting, if the airway leaks. But I wonder that is this something one can learn overnight? I also wonder that are we supposed to have this firm adduction also in the high register including some muscular work? Thank you so much 🙏

4:33 - I think I have a good idea of what expansion feels like, but with the engagement, is it essentially just the feeling of the stomach naturally pulling in slightly when you say the "he"? I watched your appoggio videos but it always feels like I'm forcing the muscles to pull in...rather than naturally... I don't know it just feels weird to me.

I'm not sure, I'm afraid. Ask your doctor for further clarification. Have you spoken to an ENT? If you have been a singing instructor, explain that to the ENT and see what the gap may be and how it would affect your voice. All the best, Jeff

My ability to sing in head voice is gone and my rang has decreased dramatically and my tone not so great Im scared if never sing again or have beautiful voice I worked so hard for again😞 is it possible I’d get my voice back?

I thought lip trill help with vocal closure
@JeffRolka
@JeffRolka 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe, but perhaps not in the way that one might think it would. The lip trill works because it takes some of the weight of the air column off of the vocal folds. This allows the vocal fold to change configuration more easily, and can result in retaining adduction over registration events when normally that might not be the case. Adduction is 'cord closure'. The thing is, once you take the lip trill away, and sing regular vowels, those benefits disappear, so you have to have other means to achieve vocal fold adduction. That's part of what I'm covering in this video. Best! Jeff
