My first board was a Target "X Games" branded board, with the usual terrible bearings. They were AWFUL for trying to skate to school, but I feel it helped me learn some stuff without being so worried about slipping out. Of course, when you step on a real board it felt like it was on ice!
@Patrick-hz2im
@Patrick-hz2im Жыл бұрын
that's why it's important to learn to push and just use skate trainers or grass to practice tricks. that way you don't get straight iced when you go to do tricks on a decent set of bearings. those bad bearings shouldn't even exist IMO. it's like the training step that makes it harder and slows people down. altho technically skateboarding is pretty new still. maybe a couple more generations of skaters and people will start to realize the bad bearings are a risk
@kurtownsj00

@@Patrick-hz2im I agree...but in 1999 we didn't have skater trainers, and trying to learn ollies in grass felt hard to me! (so I started out on the carpet, while watching Starting Point instructional VHS) But even that felt like a slight handicap when wanting to do stuff rolling. ps- I do feel like this product is a little silly, for sure :P

Love that Glo won the game of SKATE. Won't lie when he first joined the team I thought he was outshone by some of the rest of the guys (take that with a pinch of salt from me who doesn't skate at all. He was still great then!). It's been awesome watching him get so much better and beating Aaron and Mogley shows how much he's improved!

I just got a new skateboard today and it is WAY better than beginners obviously. Those bearings roll for like half a second and you go.super slow, while real bearing go for way longer and you get a decent amount of speed in one push.

I remember back when I started learning tricks, I had already been riding everyday to school downhill pretty fast, but learning tricks while moving scared me and I even bodied a bunch, so I tried doing it not moving, but shifting my weight while staying on the spot felt almost like trying to balance on a still bike and my board felt super Shakey, after that I tried my friends skate trainer but it had zero pop and really put me off them. Eventually I came across a playground with that hard shredded rubber floor and it was perfect, just soft enough that the wheels would sink and not roll too easy so I wouldn't wobble while still but also hard enough that I could roll and pop, with practicing on there I managed to get rolling ollies, heelflips and front and pop shoveit in 2 weekends, I feel like these bearings back then would of been a godsend.

Maybe you’re supposed to tighten them so the wheels don’t roll when learning tricks like skater trainers, and then loosen them up as you get more comfortable with the trick? If you tighten these bearings they won’t get damaged like regular bearings is my guess because they are soft. Just a guess as to what the benefit might have been intended to be.

If your going to get into any sport I personally think you should start out with pro series anything & everything , pro parts tend to be more forgiving & you get the feel of what the pros use & your get a better product for your money . Everything tends to be more dialed with pro products & the wear & tear on them gos along way .

@@rat_king2801 agreed. for skateboards it's not really a problem. a full pro skateboard is like 150$ in parts, if that. but for something like a road bicycle, the difference between a casual bike and pro stuff gets huge.
@chriscaine1776
@chriscaine1776 Жыл бұрын
@@blarghblargh i mean the best set of bearings that BONES makes is like $120 for a single pack of bearings last i built a board out. The unfortunate reality is the deck and the griptape tend to be the least expensive components on a board if youre building with the best
@blarghblargh
@blarghblargh Жыл бұрын
@@chriscaine1776 I personally doubt most pros ride ceramics. But if we're talking about sparing no expense then I would bet money that most pros boards are less than $350 in parts, which is roughly the cost when doing a flight deck, ceramics, and custom grip tape. A high end road bike is $5000. A tour de france bike is $10000-$14000. Olympic bikes seem to be in the $20k range. My point stands. I also personally suspect most pros go with a standard $80 board and somewhat less exotic steel bearings. Probably swiss. So yeah, add $40 I guess. I bet most pros were riding vanilla reds/g2s/whatever cheap ones when they got signed.

It's not that complicated. It's basically an autobrake system. I work for the NYC Dept of Sanitation and on the street sweepers once you let off the gas, the sweeper immediately starts to slow itself down until a complete stop, unless you give it more gas. This is basically the same concept. It's auto stopping, basically.

Those bearings are my personal nightmare fuel. (edit: those are probably a different thing, but same design) Going all the way back to when I was 10 and got a pair of roller blades from a yard sale. Those things fell apart after a week of use. Fast forward a couple years and the first three skateboards I had all had those kinds of bearings and the same deal. They're slow, poor quality, and short lived. And then I got a pair of skates with ABEC 1 bearings and it was a whole new world. And then a set of ABEC 3 Lucky's when I was 14. The difference between the two types of bearings in a smooth surface was night and day, but on a rough surface, it was out of this world.

abec rating isn't important at all for skateboards. those ratings are important for tools that spin at tens of thousands of RPM, avoiding the amount of sloppiness that causes heat at those speeds. skateboards would have to be going like 100mph+ to hit the relevant speeds. without big diameter longboard wheels.
@brailleskateboarding
@brailleskateboarding Жыл бұрын
Hmmm that is good know. I have never known what abec stands for
@theKiwii
@theKiwii Жыл бұрын
Furthermore, the ABEC rating of a skate bearing is only correct until it's been skated once. The lateral forces on the bearings from impacts on jumps and tricks but also just cruising on rough asphalt immediately cause slight deformations that would not pass the tolerance thresholds for the original ABEC rating.
