Thank you. Was debating whether to add a band to the bottom of my sweater. I think I will now. :)

I don't bother with pins or grips I literally just snip a notch in the band front and back and on the garment ,but then I used to sew for a living I totally get the pin thing for hobby sewing.

That's fair! I typically use far less clips than I did in this tutorial, but it is definitely helpful for beginners to use more

Thank you for this presentation. You are an excellent teacher. Could you show how to put a panel on a knit top? You wear knit tops that are low cut very well but I like to be more covered up. How would I put a bib-like panel across my knit tops? I was thinking if I knew a way to attach a scarf to it or some other knit material? Could you show a video on this?

If you are making tops from scratch then it would be easier to just raise the neckline on your pattern. Are you asking about adding a panel to existing tops? That isn't something I've done before, I'd have to think on the best way to do that.

A compliment 🤗 & a Question 🙋‍♀: Your videos are great! They’re very informative and my jersey knit sewing has definitely improved! … so a huge thank you! Do you have any advice regarding the circumference length sizing ratio between the neckband and the neck opening? I would like to alter a pull-over type, hooded sweatshirt by removing the hoodie then use the fabric from the hoodie to construct a neckband in its place. There’s plenty of fabric from the hoodie but I’m uncertain what neckband dimensions would work the best to best fit into the neck opening. If it helps, the neck opening (with hoodie attached) measures ~58 cm around.

Thank you! Sorry that I wasn't able to get back to you sooner, I've had a lot going on lately. The sizing of a neckband is very tricky because the ideal percentage depends on how stretchy the fabric is, whether you are measuring the opening at the raw edge or at the sewing line, and whether you are factoring in seam allowance or not. Generally it is around 80-90% of the opening.

I’ve used 85%, which would make your neckband 49cm. I’ve recently seen 75% used…. Definitely depends on stretch of fabric.

Lots of good information. If my neckband gapes, I think it is because the free on-line pattern for the T-shirt made the neckband pattern piece too long OR it depends a lot on how stretchy knit fabric is. IS THERE A RULE OF THUMB for how much smaller the neckband should be compared to the neck opening? For example neckband 80 or 90% of the opening?
@SewPDF
@SewPDF Жыл бұрын
There isn't really a rule of thumb because the ideal percentage depends on how stretchy the fabric is, and the percentage will differ base on whether you are measuring the opening at the raw edge or the stitching line, and how big the seam allowance is. That said, my designer friend typically uses 87.5% at the stitching line as a starting point, and then adjusts from there if needed for different fabrics.

@@SewPDF Thank you for answering my question. I hadn't thought about the difference in measuring at the raw edge or the stitching line. I guess wise to baste first and see how it works.

So for the neckline you don't use a stretch stitch? Just a straight stitch? Won't it pop then?
@SewPDF
@SewPDF Жыл бұрын
I use a triple stitch, which is a stretch stitch that looks very similar to a straight stitch, but it is nice and stretchy :)
