Free watercolor painting course for beginners. It is based on an online class I ran in 2020. The initial tutorials are limited to just three colors to help students get started. Watercolour painting can seem daunting at the start but if you concentrate on the basics, and with practice, your skills can develop quickly.
My PATREON MEMBERSHIP PAGE: www.patreon.com/user/membersh... - in addition to ad-free content you get exclusive content (new videos will be more in depth than those on my KZfaq channel), hi-resolution reference photos, photos of my finished painting, and drawing outlines where available. Other benefits are also included.
My teaching manual: Mastering Watercolors - A Practical Guide: amzn.to/3ZF2FRW
The course is desinged for anyone from absolute beginner to someone who has been struggling with watercolor painting.
This video covers the key materials you will need to complete the rest of the course which is expected to run over more than 10 episodes.
I aim to make watercolor painting as easy to understand so everyone can benefit from this wonderful medium.
If you have any comments, questions or requests, please leave them in the comment section below. I read and respond to all of them, and the feedback will help me plan future videos.
Happy painting.
LINKS BELOW TO SOME OF THE MATERIALS
My book Mastering Watercolors - A Practical Guide: amzn.to/3ZF2FRW
Here are some links to the key items mentioned in my video; where they are affliate links I will mark them as such.
Palette: amzn.to/2W7l7Ym (affiliate)
Winsor and Newton artists quality watercolors - not their student grade Cotman colors
Winsor Blue Red Shade amzn.to/3gf1SDc (affiliate)
Winsor Lemon amzn.to/37SYvx7 (affiliate)
Permanent Rose amzn.to/3AVlowo (affiliate)
Brushes - you will need to find these yourself as I cannot recommend any that I have not used myself.
Arches cold press paper 10 pack: amzn.to/3AVmTL2 (affiliate - you should be able to buy single sheets from your local art store which will be much cheaper at the start)
Kneadable eraser: amzn.to/2W9vg6h (affiliate)
Mechanical pencil: amzn.to/3AYVbwX (affiliate)
I also have a couple of watercolor painting books which I published and distribute through Amazon.
The first one, which has sold over 10,000 copies is bascially my teaching manual and is titled:
Mastering Watercolors - A Practical Guide.
The second is full of step by step demonstrations and is titled: Watercolor Step By Step: amzn.to/3z4YXEu
Both books are available in kindle format and paperback.

Hey Joe, I just discovered your course after looking at a number of beginners lessons online. Really enjoy the way you engage with the viewer; it feels like you’re having a one-to-one lesson. The way you start with just the 3 colours I found particularly heartening, diving straight into ‘these are my 20 colours’ is too intimidating for an absolute beginner!

I agree. Every time I watch a tutorial I seem to have different paints, and the artist uses stuff I cannot yet afford. I would love a box of colors but this three-paint process seems easily doable.

Hi Joe, (again). I've been struggling with watercolor, not getting the results I"d like, so I've made the decision to start from the basics. That's when I discovered you, mainly your rock video. I adore rocks, landscapes, and wildlife!! Flowers are ok but not quite as exciting. I love that you're devoted to sharing a complete course without a charge. I've been watching video after video of artists doing wonderful, amazing things, but my painting is just not getting any better. So back to the basics!!

Wow, Joe. This is lovely. What an amazing series for beginners you have offered. I've been trying to self-teach, dabbling in watercolor on-and-off for a few years now. I've decided to double down and really commit myself to practicing and learning this tricky but beautiful art, and the information on KZfaq and people's blogs just starts to get so overwhelming. I was looking for someone who offered a free or inexpensive series for me to start learning in a much more systematic approach and to shut out all the other noise. There are quite a few free, beginner lessons and series out there (which is really fantastic!), but no one's style spoke to me the way yours has, and some just feel like they start off too simple and childish, like having you paint lots and lots of leaves or circles or wash after wash (I know there is value in any kind of practice, especially if you've barely yet touched brush to paper). I'm really enjoying your method and approach and your tutorial paintings start off beautiful right out the gate! I am very grateful. Thank you for what you have so generously shared!

Thank you so much Mr Cartwright that was great, sort of got most of the "stuff" I use the Winsor Newton Cotman series of paint ( bit cheaper) . A4 is the size used, possibly a little small, but once again cheaper and Winslow Aquarelle 200 gsm cold press paper and once again it's a cost thing - block of 100 sheets for around the $50 -60 mark. Great class and I'll be looking forward to the next one. I should be doing more watercolour at this time of the year, the cooler months but I'm going through a colour pencil stage at the moment, which is better to do in the warmer months as temperature control for watercolour is a bit of an issue where I live. You have inspired me to get back to paint again (soon as I finish the pencil picture I'm doing). Oh thank you so much for posting your work on Facebook, you are a truely awesome artist and amaze me with the paintings you do - guess I'm a bit of a fan :)
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Grant. Please remember that Cotman paints are not neccessarily the same colors as the Winsor and Newton Artists quality paints - so your results may be different to mine. The paper may also be an issue - just note what happens when you use it.

Hello. I am an absolute beginner in my 60s. Have purchased the WN Cotman palette of 24. It contains lemon yellow and permanent rose but has 4 blues and I am uncertain which is closest to the blue you suggest. Those 4 blues are ultramarine, cobalt, cerulean, and prussian. Which one do I use. My untrained eye suspects cobalt but I really don't know. Thank you so much for your instruction and for your time in answering questions. You are creating joy on folks' lives. I look forward to beginning my journey under your video tutelage.
@JoeCartwright

Welcome on board. I am not familiar with the Cotman Palette as is different from the Winsor and Newton Artists Quality one, I suggest you go with Ultramarine for the blue as you will use it in all of my later more advanced demonstrations.

Hi Joe !! Thanks a ton for this course and your efforts to create one. Just amazing content. I have a doubt regarding mixing colors. Say I am painting a big surface with a color that I mixed. If the color is all used up and I have to create the same shade again, how do you suggest I should go about that so that I get the same shade. It might be a stupid question, but it bugs me.
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
Glad you are enjoying my videos. Firstly it is always better to mix lots of extra color rather than trying to create the same shade again. However if you have to mix more, I suggest this process. Once you mix your initial color, test it on a scrap bit of watercolor paper. Then if you have to mix more you at least have some reference to work towards. Not a perfect solution but it should at least help. With practice you get better at matching colors and making allowances for wet vs dry paint.

Hello Joe, thanks so much for this course, I want to learn the basics and develop my own style one day. During lockdown in Sydney, I set my self up with Windsor and Newton Cotman pan set which I love but I think I need tubes now. A question, what weight paper do you recommend? I have been using 300gm Daler Rowney hot pressed as recommended by an artist in UK who I followed for a while. Thank you. I’m replaying lesson 2 now and following along. Kate 😊😊
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kathryn, glad you are enjoying my videos. I mainly use 185 gsm. There are a few reasons for this. One is that when I travel the paper is half the weight - which can be important when you are limited to 22KG for luggage. Secondly when painting outdoors, as I often paint early in the morning, 300 gsm can take too long to dry before I can do my wet on dry passages. Thirdly 185 gsm is about half the price. So as there is no difference in the surface quality - I use Arches paper, I see no need to use the 300 gsm.
@kathrynwoolcock4943
@kathrynwoolcock4943 2 жыл бұрын
@@JoeCartwright Thanks Joe, that really helps me understand better. I thought the paper was rather heavy in the pad I bought from masters in UK as they had the best price. I’ll look around here and see what I find. Thanks for your advice. Kate

Hi Joe Love the course. Is there a great difference apart from cost between Arches 185 and 300 g/m2 paper in the way it behaves. Would I be better to keep the remaining 300g A4 till later? Cheers
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, only big difference is that the 300 GSM paper will absorb a lot more water, so you have to allow for this. It is good paper.

Hi, these days I just use a piece of 6mm thick black acrylic which you should be able to pick up from a hardware store on line. I bought mine from ebay and it is A3 size which works well with a quarter watercolor sheet. I prefer a matt finish.

Hi Joe. I have some water colour cakes at home. Can I get started with them?
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 7 ай бұрын
Watercolour cakes can be a bit hard to extract colour from. Better to get the tube paints, but see how you go if you already have them.

What is exact measurements papers you are painting on . Thanks
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 2 жыл бұрын
The papers are approximately 14" x 11" or 37 cm x 27 cm. Sometimes we will use smaller sizes but this is the largest.

Is stretching the paper necessary?
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 2 жыл бұрын
No, I don't usually stretch my paper. However you do have to contend with your paper cockling (buckling) which takes a little while to get used to. In my latest video on Venice, which | posted today, quite an advanced painting, I talk about how to keep the paper flat, without stretching - just wetting the back of the paper. It might be of interest to you.

Where do you get gaterboard? (in the USA) Thank you!

Here is one supplier. Just google Gatorfoam and you should find many others. I use the brown version like this one, though mine is only 10 mm thick. www.cheapjoes.com/gatorfoam-board-brown-16-x-23-x-1-2.html

@@JoeCartwright thank you so much! I found it interesting that you wet your watercolor paper on the back and then the surface of the gatorboard, placing the paper on the board without taping it down. Once it drys, does it dry flat?
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 2 жыл бұрын
@@paulacheadle2508 It doesn't dry totally flat (see my video on flattening watercolors with a steam iron), but it tends to dry flatter than when you just tape the paper around the edges and not wetting the back.

Hi, I have just discovered your course, thank you. Last night I was moaning to my artist husband that I wasn't getting good, and part of the problem was the unstructured nature of how I was trying to use free resources on KZfaq. As good as they are, it is my inability to not be able to concentrate and get distracted by other videos, especially animal tales. LOL. And then guess what, I logged on today and found you immediately. You were sent to me by the art fairies. LOL. So I have my paints all set up for this video and shall work through the course one after another until I have mastered something. Once again thanks. Also, could you please not use background music in your videos? It is annoying and I am sure it is unnecessary. I've got the music of the garden coming in my window on this spring day. REgards.

Hi Janice, Glad you have found my channel. Totally understand your concern about the background music. I stopped doing it after the first few videos. :-)
