Loved the video and the exercise. One piece of feedback - I'm a super beginner and would have found it helpful if you explained how you were mixing the colors and talked through how much water you were using... would have helped understand the water to paint ratios etc. I will definitely keep watching the other exercise videos! Thank you for making them!

Decades ago, I followed a watercolour course. The teacher put emphasis on the drawing and we never got to do exercises like this. This is genius. I will follow all your exercises. I am horrible at drawing, but I loooooove watercolour. And your video is very good and I love your tone of voice.

So can you replicate this when doing a drawing? IE: Is there a "recipie"? I'm thinking you Do 1) Pure color for the darkest 2) 3/4 Paint 1/4 water for the next 3) 1/2 1/2 for the middle 4) 3/4 water 1/4 paint for the 4th 5) Mostly water little paint for the lightest Would this be approximate in order to be consistent every time you use this color?
@TheWittyGrittyPaperCo
@TheWittyGrittyPaperCo 8 жыл бұрын
+BushcraftOnFire From my limited drawing experience, I would say yes. And I would also agree that that's a pretty accurate "recipe". However, I've always tried to do it without thinking too technically because watercolor has always struck me as a medium that benefits from listening to your instincts! :) But that's a great rule of thumb if you like set proportions for mixing! :) Best, Meredith

I love this so much! I suddenly woke up a day wanting to paint. I always liked it and tough it was beautiful but I always told myself if I didn't knew since and early age then I would never do, I remember even telling a friend that I would love to paint and they say I couldn't cause some people are just born with it. So today I woke up and started looking for beginner videos and found yours, I'm so happy I did, thanks so much for this great videos! ❤️

Hi there! I'm so glad you are enjoying the videos! I've heard something similar from other people, but I firmly believe that there is no reason why anyone can't paint. If you want to paint, you absolutely should. Watercolor has been an amazing addition to my life and it makes my heart happy to be able to share that with others in a small way. And although some people may take to it more quickly and be naturals, hard work always beats talent when talent doesn't want to work hard. I'm sure you are going to create some amazing art. Thank you so much for watching! I hope you have a lovely day! :) Best, Meredith

A friend of mine picked up painting when he was around 35 (guesstimate). I think it was about 8-10 years ago. He wanted a hobby and chose painting. Oil painting if I remember correctly. Beautiful work for "not being a painter since he was a kid"!! I had him paint a dragonsnap painting for my mom for mothers day (very hard flower for a beginner, I had no idea!) and it was absolutely beautiful! Just goes to show that age is just a number! ;-) Just go pick up that paintbrush and have fun!

You did not tell us how to dilute the paints to get these various shades of color! As a newbie would it be better to make the concentrated darkest paint first, then just add this to wells with different quantities of water in it??
@TheWittyGrittyPaperCo
@TheWittyGrittyPaperCo 8 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Sorry for the delay in my reply! Diluting your paints is as simple as shifting the ratio of water to paint. So the more water you add, the more diluted the paint color becomes, and that's how you create multiple shades of the same color. Starting with the most concentrated darkest paint and then adding more and more water (which is what I did in the video) is something I would recommend to newbies and experienced painters alike. Hope that helps a bit, and thank you so much for watching! :) Best, Meredith

I am so loving your tutorials. Watercolor has been a mystery, but you are helping me crack the code!! My mother has spent her artistic life in oils and acrylics. I tried to introduce watercolor to her recently, and she commented, "I do not understand this medium." I agree with her...watercolor as a medium is a mystery to both of us...but you are uncovering the secrets for me. As a result, I know that when the time is right for mother, I'll be able to uncover it for her as well. I have a late friend who painted with watercolors exclusively, and I am proud to say I own one of her watercolor paintings. I only wish I had sat with her when she painted one of her pictures. I only wish I had several of her pictures and not just one!! Thanks so much for taking the time to help us all crack the code to this beautiful artistic expression!!

Thank you for the excellent lesson. It was more of a lesson than I expected. The color I chose was Daniel Smith's Bordeaux which isn't too far off from the color you used. I've USSR its an exercise, I used Strathmore 300 series. It came out a bit uneven and blotchy even though I've been able to get some pretty flat washes. For curiosity's sake and to further my understanding of materials, I decided to sacrifice a sheet of Arches cold press to see if I could improve my washes. Wow! What a difference. My washes on Arches turned out beautiful. When I run m fingers over the papers, I can feel the paint sitting above the Strathmore whereas the Arches is smooth and the paint has been absorbed. I hope this helps anyone else learning watercoloring.
