If you've ever wondered exactly how you program airways and procedures into the Garmin G1000 in Microsoft Flight Simulator, wonder no more :) It's worth noting that I only go as far as programming the lateral routing in this short video - I don't get into cruise altitudes, descent profiles, or anything like that (which the Garmin G1000 can also help you with!).

A few quick tips for you and others learning this. 1. There’s a nice “collapse airways” choice available at any time (not just while editing airways) while using the MENU button. It tidies up your flight plan by just showing “Airway - Airway Name.Exit Waypoint” instead of all those intermediate waypoints. You can use the MENU button again to expand the airway any time you like. 2. To turn the “inner FMS knob”, you can just place your cursor over the end of the knob rather than hunting for that little curved arrow, it works the same but is much easier to select. 3. That same knob tip also applies to any of the RANGE knobs, or Autopilot knobs, or any knobs, just use the end of the knob, it’s much easier especially when looking from a regular upright cockpit position. Though sometimes for knobs without an inner/outer knob, the curved arrow is just as easy.

My problem was with airways . I did not know how to enter it into the flight plan, but after your explanation, I understood and tried it and it worked.

Wish i had the means of getting little NavMap. Id love to do a proper pre plan before embarking on a flight. At the moment I'm just setting Departures and Arrivals from taxi on the Flight Plan then having to make changes to my Flight Plan when ATC tells me to take "x" approach or arrival and just programming what ATC tells me. Im more than likely doing most things wrong but ive managed to go from Birmingham to Toulouse, France over 3 flights kind od just winging it 😂 but i am missing the Immersion that your entire preplanned routes consist.

Thanks again Jonathan... 👍🏻 Just one question if I may... I noticed that once the plan is complete it displays the waypoint altitudes - but I'm also aware that for VNAV purposes they're the wrong colour - white instead of teal. Besides going through each waypoint and manually editing the altitude - is there a switch or a setting that validates all the levels together? Thank you! 😊
@jonbeckett

In the notes of the video, I wrote "I only go as far as programming the lateral routing" - VNAV is another subject for another day :) It's worth noting that the altitudes are often wrong.

Brilliant video as usual. But that's something I don't really understand. I have watched several of your clips and you always enter the ILS in the flight plan. But still, as a pilot you have to do something in the air when you start the approach to activate the ILS. When and how does this happen? Yes, I'm a noob but I'm still learning :)
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett 6 ай бұрын
I tend to fly the ILS by hand most of the time - there are a few basic things to keep in mind: 1. Tune the NAV radio to the appropriate ILS frequency 2. Set the HSI to use LOC or VOR mode - not FMS or GPS (varies from aircraft to aircraft) 3. Turn the course to match the runway direction (if on a rotary HSI, and if it lets you) - just to help with orientation. If you're using autopilot and want the plane to fly down the glideslope, get the plane in roughly the right place (for a 3 degree glideslope more than 8 miles out, flying runway direction, level, lined up, at 2500ft AGL) - then activate approach mode on the autopilot BEFORE you cross through the glideslope.

I understand but still not. I lost myself relatively quickly. But why do you have to set the ILS/NAV freq when the MCDU has already received this data from the flight plan in the world map. In my world it should be enough to activate aprc when you start approaching, maybe not that simple. Maybe you have a beginner's guide on this? It feels like overkill to always have to look at the approach chart when the data is already available.@@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett 6 ай бұрын
@@TonyMontana-lh2zc the world map might have it, but that doesn't mean the GPS unit, the NAV radio, or the HSI has it :)

Where can you find the total nm remaining to the end of the route? It’s tedious to add up all the legs and I don’t see an option in settings to give me a DTG for the flight plan, only one for the distance to the next waypoint. Am I missing something?
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett 6 ай бұрын
It's REALLY well hidden. 1. Look at the navigation display. 2. Click the FPL button (which shows the flight plan) 3. Roll the outer FMS knob (which pops up a dialog at the bottom right) 4. Roll the outer FMS knob one click LEFT (which shows the Aux page group) 5. Roll the inner knob to select "System Setup" (which will make the system setup screen appear behind the dialog) 6. Press the FMS knob in, to make the cursor appear on the system setup page 7. Roll the outer FMS knob to move the cursor to the top right group of fields - "MFD Data Bar Fields" 8. Change "ETE" to "DTG" 9. Buy me a coffee :) :)

An “efficiency” suggestion, after watching your vid again. 1. Enter your Airports and Runways 2. Enter the GIRL3X.GIRLI SID 3. Enter the SILVA.SILV1C STAR (you can also enter an approach here or not, depending on what you desire) 4. Go below GIRLI and enter the P18 airway to POL (POL is now a menu selection rather than a manual waypoint entry.) 3. Go below POL and enter the M605 airway to SILVA (SILVA is now a menu selection rather than a manual waypoint entry.) (note that the P18 airway entries will automatically edit themselves to go from POL to FINMA and not add a duplicate SILVA, since SILVA is already in the flight plan from the SILV1C STAR. And the route WILL properly connect from FINMA to SILVA This sets up your entire plan without having to also manually enter GIRLI and SILVA as enroute waypoints. The thing about airways is they do all the work for you, if you let them. Happy flying!
@jonbeckett
@jonbeckett 6 ай бұрын
Yep - I guess the reason I often put the route in first is because I'm used to airliners, where you do the route first.
