Watching this video while everyone in my city is celebrating that Spain won the euro. More Spanish rap that I think is great: - Kase O - Santiuve - Jaloner (absolutely crazy twisting of the language and nuts structures) - Erik Urano - Bejo - Dano - Hermanos Herméticos - Chirie Vegas - Tremendo - Solo los solo - Mucho Muchacho

Spanish rap listener here, just found this video because Ergo Pro shared it on Twitter. Hoke is going to be a generational talent in Spanish rap, same as the Mafia Gregoriana duo (Ergo Pro & Ill Pekeño). I think you would love my personal favorite, Dano, who's Argentinian-Spanish and is a huge nerd regarding everything hip-hop. Also, one of the biggest if not the biggest regions of Spain for hip-hop is probably the Canary Islands. Check out Cruz Cafuné (huge in Spain) and Bejo (also huge and yet underrated as a rapper). Love the content! I'm a new fan.

Amazing video. I would say that there's a bigger focus on class than on race in Spanish rap, which is also changing because of the immigration that has happened on the last 20-30 years. I have to recommend Erik Urano and the sadly late Gata Cattana as further suggestions into Spanish rap. They're absolutely incredible.

The reason why hiphop begun in zaragoza in our country, is because of the military base, which had connection to american radio, and where products from America (like cds and magazines) arrived frequently.

Spain wasn't a inmigrant receiving country until late 90s/early 00s, so of course the spanish team that won between 2008 and 2012 was pretty homogenic. The children of the first inmigrants were still kids at that time. You can't compare Spain with France. About Zaragoza, rap was introduced there because EEUU used the military base in the city until 1994. The military bases were one the place when hop hop arrived in Spain (Zaragoza, Torrejon de Ardoz near Madrid, etc.). Even if the most famous hip hop group was from Zaragoza (Violadores del Verso, which is the main one because one of his members is Kase O who is extremely popular. His rap style in the firt years was very influenced by Erick Sermon from EPMD.) and the scene in that city was pretty important in the 00s, it wasn't the first important band in Spain. There were important bands before them in Madrid (CPV) and Barcelona (7 notas 7 colores, I highly recommend their first album from 1997). I disagree with hip hop having to be socially compromised. The magic of this music is that you can talk about whatever you want. It started as party music and with exceptions like The Message , didn't start to be concious and political until KRS-One, Public Nemy and all that wave in the late 80s. Don't get me wrong, I like it when they rap about serious issues, but is not conditio sine qua non to be a good song or a good rapper.

I cringe so much at myself for having recommended Flowklorikos, I had completely blocked out Me gustan gordas from my mind. The most successful rapper from that group was just 17, when they released the album, and it sounds like it. The song is quite objectifying towards women. But there are amazing songs in their last album (donde duele inspira), which is great, and by Lechowski on his own, such as de paso por lo eterno, where he talks about his experiences as a migrant in Spain, also rapping a bit in Polish. I was referring more towards that part of their career 😅 Other than that, there's also a long tradition of political rap in Spain. Not related, but Kase.O with his band Jazz Magnetism is worth a listen, he's been an influencial raper for ages. And Arianna Puello with La Ley de Murphy and songs like that is amazing, she's a black woman, which is some needed representation, because Spanish rap is quite white.

AVAA! thank you for the video! I don't really enjoy rap, but I was thinking in any other bands, some of them don't rap or sing in Spanish, like Chill Mafia Records that are from the Basque Country, Zoo Posse from the Valencian Country, that mix rap with other genres; and Gata Cattana (this one in Spanish), that was an Andalucian rapper who sadly passed away a few years ago. I hope you enjoy them!

Just got here because Ergo Pro shared this video on Twitter. The band from Zaragoza you refer to is Violadores del verso, it translates to somthing like Verse rapists. And the rap culture started in Zaragoza because there was a USA airbase and the military started to swap cassettes with their spanish friends and this way, more or less, spanish people met rap. I think "Me gustan gordas" is more like a fun song to do, not a serious one. At least thats the way i've been listening to it all these years. Ergo pro and ill pekeño are one of the best rappers in the latest years. Ill pekeño just released his last album a few months ago. I've read some comments and i'll add a few recomendations: SFDK, Eric Hervé, Luisaker, Tote king, there are a lot more, i hope you enjoy!

Really enjoyed the video, Professor Skye! I think you should check out Nico Miseria. He's a really talented producer who's worked with rappers such as Bejo (whom i've seen mentioned in this comments section and which i also highly recommend) but his solo stuff is just perfection. The lyrics, the sampling, the atmosphere, the rapping... He's so solid all around and hugely underrated. Really cannot recommend him enough, specially his three latest albums Tercer Verano del Amor (though he had some copyright issues with this one and had to change some of the best beats), El Periplo del Héroe (his best album, to me) and the latest Yo no soy yo, which I've just been playing on repeat lately as it's full with gems. Sorry for the rambling but I felt like Miseria HAD to be mentioned. New to the channel but i think i'll check out your other videos which seem great and will stick around to see what else you have to say about Spanish rap! (and maybe eventually Catalan rap as well, which to be honest is still just in its infancy and yet to fully take off and produce some generational talents but it's showing some green leaves already! I'd be glad to give you some names if you're ever interested in giving it a go!) Ok, now i really am cutting the rambling for good. See you!

I would recommend an OG rapper who has had excellent mixtapes since the 2000s, his name is Yako Muñoz: he is a very complete rapper from Madrid, ahead of his time unlike the majority of the rap scene in Spain, because rap in Spain is always Only east cost rap predominated and his way of rapping seems very west coast to me, plus he did rap from the 2000s, r&b, east cost, west coast, trap at the end of the 2000s, etc... and in my opinion it is one of the few who best imitates the way Americans rap (usa)

There's one factor you're overlooking here. In Spain there isn't nearly as much racial tension as in the US. Rap music was brought here by poor teens, whether they be Arabic, White, Gypsies, Sub-Saharians... It's not a matter of which race uses rap to voice their concerns, it's a matter of poor vs rich, ghetto vs corruption, a poet trying to disguise their verse to avoid committing a hate crime against the royal family,... Rap (and originally trap) in Spain was born as a way to speak up about injustice, institutional corruption and life's struggles below the poverty line. Now rich white kids try to ride the waves of hip hop and trap for fame, just like everywhere else, but the origins of rap here had nothing to do with race so it's only a "problem" because they speak about being criminals and living in poverty when they've always had money and never had to get their hands dirty. I recommend the song "money game" by swit eme, which demonstrates pretty well what rap in Spain is about.

Okay lots of stuff First off AVAA Other people have recommended them already but Dano and Bejo are clearly two of the most interesting Spanish rappers working nowadays; although Dano is originally from Argentina, which I'm sure you'll find very interesting. He's been a sort of link between Spanish and Argentinian rap for some decades now. In a more mainstream vein, less of a pure rap style, but musically very tasteful and bringing together lots of cool musical traditions, you have Dellafuente. He's put out all sorts of stuff: reggaeton influenced songs, flamenco influenced songs, British club music influenced EPs, and a whole side project that brouhht back rock andaluz, a mix of prog and flamenco from the 70s. But my favourite album of his is Lágrimas pa otro día, very sophisticated modern pop with excellent songwriting and production. Also if you're interested in the voice of the voiceless thing, Mala Rodríguez is a fascinating and problematic case. She's part gitana (Roma people, or "gypsies"), but she's also completely bought into capitalist fueled liberal feminist narratives. Still, Lujo Ibérico is a top 5 Spanish rap album of all time. Carmen Xía is more interested in introducing political stuff from a feminist, class sensitive and Andalusian (the poor, southernmost región of Spain I live in) perspective. She can also sing in copla style, a traditional vocal pop style in Spain. She's coming out with her second album soon. And last but not least: I can't believe you have a José Guerrero in your house, the public modern art museum in Granada, my city, is named after him lol

There are more but i personally dont like em that much Also there's rap outside the classic hip hop like: Dellafuente (i love it) Young beef (well, pretty unique i would say) Cráneo ... Just saying some of em From latin america there are more, and they are also wayyy good, the best spanish rappee ver is from Venezuela: Canserbero. This may take a while to read but if you do then I'll be really thankful. Sorry in advance... Whoever told you that the Club de los Poetas Violentos (CPV; which translates to The Club of the Violent Poets) is the biggest group in Spain lied to ya lol. It is most definitely Violadores del Verso, also known as Doble V, also from Zaragoza. I heavily recommend you listen to their albums. From them, Kase.O is the most famous and revered as the best MC historically but of course, the scene has a lot of detractors that argue that it's heavily biased by nostalgia and he doesn't compete in the more modern era. He's also the author of what's considered the "best" Spanish rap song, "Pura droga sin cortar"; but yet again, the same argument can apply (again also I recommend you listen to it). If I were to recommend more artists I'd have to go with the best group from where I'm from (Málaga, Andalucía, yknow the south of Spain) and tell you to listen to Hablando en Plata Squad, alternatively HPSquad. They can have really provocative and violent lyrics and not have all the appeal at first but that's where they shine the most. I recommend listening to their albums in chronological order (Operación Mafia Fantástica -> A Sangre Fría -> Supervillanos de Alquiler -> Libertad / Hambre) but suggest on skipping their celebratory remaster album "Tu familia hasta morir"; they mostly butchered all of the songs featured in that. Obviously also listen to each member's standalone albums: Capaz's "El último cigarro" and "20 golpes" ang Sicario's "La ley de Ohm" and "Nucleares" are must listens. Also heavily related to Hablando en Plata as he has collaborated a lot with them is Elphomega. He has a great career and lyricism, specially if you're into cinema and comicbooks. Along with Capaz they share a "series" of songs named "Illpack" across multiple albums who are all about it. Remember how I said the best Spanish rap song was "Pura droga sin cortar"? Well the title is partly a reference to one of Elphomega's songs, as well as being mentioned in the song. Him and HPSquad have been said to be Kase.O's favorite rap artists. That's on the level of the classic "MF DOOM is your favorite rapper's favorite rapper" lol (they also share the whole having supervillain personas, most infamously showcased in the Supervillanos de Alquiler album). If you have spare time (which might be a lot to ask for at this point lmao) of course I would also recommend SFDK (renowned as the best Andalusian rap group and one of the best in Spain), Fyahbwoy and Shabu One Shant for a more reggae influence, Falsalarma who are from Cataluña (although they rap in Spanish, sorry) and last but definitely not least Ariana Puello, who is from the Dominican Republic but lived in Cataluña, and has that "voice of the voiceless" thing going on you were looking for. My favorite track from her is "Arriba los buscavidas"; the most beautiful instrumental and lyrics (I recommend translating if you can) Yeah as you can see I'm an oldhead and I can't really recommend anything that new so I'm really sorry lol but you will definitely get great recommendations from the rest of the comments. I just discovered you from this video but will surely watch more from you. Much love 💜

AVAA Quick Spanish language note: "No te pido que me salves" translates to "I'm not asking you to save me". "Pido" is the first person of the present tense. If you want to make it "I did not ask you to save me" then you'll say "No te pedí que me salvaras". "Salves" and "Salvaras" are both subjunctive but the first would be "present subjuctive" and the latter would be "imperfect past" (or however you say that in English).

Also i recommend you the late Gata Cattana (R.I.P) who has meanignfull feminist lyrics that use a lot of mithologycal and historical references (she studied politics). Also i will recommend you Nethone a great street story steller. Vamos Spain but if you bottle it I get a bank holiday so wins a win. Football aside this is an excellent video, especially loved the intro feel like you explained why I love football and rap, never thought of them as both being related by the fact they're meritocracies. If you do eventually do an English rap video, English rap and football overlap alot but the previous English Euros Anthem from Euro2020 Olé Olé by Krept and Konan is a pretty fun jam. Had me supporting England in 2021 (bad memories 😬) It got absolutely no play in the UK except from me lmao, classic England

Please do Greek rap, we have such a great history and great hiphop community. From very concious founders Fortified Concept, to boombap Terror X Crew, to more commercial but still political rap Goin Through, to satirical rap Immiskoumbria, and the founders of a new Greek rap genre called low bap Active Member and even reggae rap Razzastar. These started in the 80ies and have still relevant songs to this day. The 90ies brought Zontanoi Nekroi who where influenced by american ganster rap. Alfa Gama and Voreia Asteria brought more concious rap to the scene, describing the real lifestyle of Greek citizens. Underground artists became more relevant and gained popularity in the late 2000nds and 2010s. Nowadays you have a big trapscene in Greece rooting back to Madclip who was born in the US and moved to Greece to bring trap to the country, also Lektikos was before him but Madclip made it commercial. From Voreia Asteria LEX, Tzamal and Mirkos Kleftis are still very relevant and have great albums and put out big singles. Especially LEX is the most popular rapper nowadays in Greece filling football stadiums of up to 30k people and more. Check also Ethismos, Bloody Hawk, 12os Pithikos, Rapboy, Atheatos, Novel, Mo Skillz and many many more out! You'll be suprised of Greece's rap history

A bit premature to already crown them, though they certainly would deserve the title. But maybe there is also a "Good (English) Rap from England" video in the works. Please don't jinx it, Prof. Still always down with Mala Rodriguez since Jugadores, Jugadoras, no matter the occasion. Another good Rapper who is as long in the game and also released a new LP this year is ToteKing.

summary to some of the points early in the video which perhaps just show too much of an anglo world vision in regards to culture, identity etc. Your intial point about "the voice of the voiceless" in spain and the lack of basque or catalan rap, those two are some of the richest areas in Spain, by a mile. Their independent movement is more akin to the oil baron Texan one than a minority like the kurds wanting freedom from their neighbours (not a perfect analogy but in the context of american independence crowds its the closest analogy). In Spain most of the rap culture comes from a class war more than a race one, it is mostly a culture around working class neighbourhoods that came about from the fascist goverment building tons of council housing and poor people moving in the 60s. There are also many famous rappers that have the kind of poor, working class backgrounds and come sometimes even from the analogies to the ghettos where hiphop originated in america. Even some of the largest names like for example C Tangana he has a moroccan mom (from ifni) despite him white passing where you would not see the kind of obviously immigrant heritage that you can see in many french artists. Also you mentioned the Spanish team and its non immigrant background make up, but in 2008 the team midfield had Senna a black player of Brazilian heritage which led to our first euros in 40 years. Spain also "suffers" from most of its immigration coming from south american origins, all of which have very strong Football associations so most of the second generation kids still choose to play for that country. Messi could have played for Spain, Garnacho could have played for Spain, Hakimi could have played for Spain but they choose Argentina and Morocco instead. France has many players that come from countries whose FA is sadly underfunded and many choose to play for France rather than countries like Senegal despite being able to play for either. Which is why many of the players who still decide to play for the country of their background become heroes back home such as Etoo in Camerun or how Drogba basically stopped a civil war in Ivory Coast. The idea of race and culture etc in Spanish colonialism is very different from the anglosphere one and requieres taking off the american googles sometimes. Nahuatl was the official language of the spanish colonies, which were not even technically colonies but Vicerroyalties. The system was not extractive resources for the capital such as the extraction of sugar in the caribean to trade in london, but the growth of the spanish empire hence over 80% of the extracted resources remained in Mexico for example. Despite the cruelty of colonisation and the lasting effects it has to this day, the history of spain in meso america is very different to the french in africa or the colonial british proyect in north america and the effects also differ. Multiple ex spanish colonies have had native and indigenous presidents, however imagining a native american US president feels like an impossible idea for example. Or the french central bank still controlling the currency of multiple african countries feels very different to the relationship spain has with south america which is none as their main trading currency is the american dollar. Nuances like this are important when understanding Spain's colonial past, its the same reason Spain does not celebrate Columbus while America does. Rap in spain also served as an avenue for non mainstream appeal and this comes in many different angles but I will use a number of examples to illustrate the idea. In Spain in the late 90s and early 2000s there was a resurgence of right wing nationalism. Spain got close to Bush, hooligans for mayor football teams regularly beat up immigrants and homosexuals etc. In this culture rap come out as a fairly left leaning, immigrant working class neighbourhood proyect, most rappers in spain to this day are all very left wing (which ended up with an interesting rap beef between an artist being accused of being a sell out and a group who prided themselves of being independent and some interesting conversations about how independent you can be when your distributor is owned by universal music group and how you can pretend to be a sell out to retain the rights to your masters etc). At the same time spanish music had a bit of a pop heyday, with songs being very repetitive, loud, easy to dance too etc. In response to that, rap in spanish tends to be very technical, things like metric structures, things like complicated verses are all common and bragged about. Some songs just go over the top and one artists famously did a song where every verse only uses one vowel (First verse all As, second verse all Es etc) So spanish rap uses a lot of the intricacies of spanish language to an extend english is not capable of. Finally Rap also allowed for non mainstream lifestyles to be showcased. As silly as the song about liking fat women might seem, spain much like France is a very fatphobic country. Therefore a song talking about liking bigger women is at odds with the mainstream of the time. Same with the oversized clothes against the mainstream tight everything. Same with smoking weed when its illegal etc. It sadly still has the kind of machismo that also appears in black american hiphop, where women, gays and other identity minorities are not openly accepted many times but that as everything is changing. With some big artists making big moves in that respect. The interest in technical skill is also showcased by the very strong battle rap culture. When america and uk have given that up a bit for a stronger album and mixtape culture. Spain and South america have a ton of rap battling, parks were circles are formed, and where the expectation is of complicated rhyming patterns and metric works beyond what some artists put on albums. All in all I think that you made a fantastic video, its increidbly hard to make a video about music in a language you are not fluent in and a country you do not live in so trully some remarkable insight on tops of stuff. It just has a bit of the anglo sphere understanding of the world and that creates some expectations and misunderstandings of how some things are actually remarkably similar to the american hiphop with the push against the mainstream being different just because american and spanish culture are not akin. If by any chance you read this and want more recommendations, or want some more context on any of the points, or any questions in regards of spanish rap to american culture etc feel free to reach out. TLDR: you did a great job, living and knowing spain a bit better would help with some of the misalignment between expectations and what you listened and saw

Hola Profesor Cielo, south american here but on the 2000-2010 I used to listen A LOT of rap from Spain, so here my recomendations to you and everyone here trying to cover variety: Jota Mayuscula - Una Vida Xtra (2004) The Dre's 2001 from Spain, Jota is a producer and he bring the cream de la cream of that moment from Spain, the production is exquisite and eclectic, flamengo, jazz, boom bap, ad libs, hardcore, lot of bass. Hablando en Plata - Supervillanos de alquiler (2003) Storytelling at its finest, so many narratives, explict horrorcore, you can think Tech Nine. Violadores del Verso - Vicios y virtudes (2001) The most important rap group of Spain. Killer rhymes, the MC Kase O is a standout. They where young and raw here, you can also listen a more mature Vivir para contarlo (2006). 7 notas 7 colores - Hecho, es simple (1997) So pure, a discovery on style, it sound old and demoish, an Illmatic but with fun on it. Chirie Vegas - Vintage (2004) Bling bling. A true lover of Das EFX and 90's rap. I think at the time it was mocked, but later it was copied. Tremendo - Vidalogía (2004) Chill and meditative, so many one liners. Smart and original. An MF DOOM not in style but in being special. Flowklorikos - Donde duele inspira (2007) Nothing like the Me Gustan Gordas era, here is depression on front. Sadness, broken hearts, nihilism, poetry, alcohol. A Charles Bukowski rapping. Guateque All Stars - Guateque All Stars (2002) Move your ass. Rap, R&B, funk. Elphomega - El Testimonio Libra (2007) The nerd of the nerds, the king of references, comics, movies, graffiti, breakdance, italian giallo, neo noir, please listen Homogeddon (2005) and Phantom Pop (2011), he is my favourite. You can also check La Mala Rodriguez, SFDK, Elio Toffana, Frank T. Hope can help! AVAA = AVCS = Asombroso Video Como Siempre profesor!

see, the thing is catalan and basque speaking rappers arent taken seriously because people from those regions tend to be richer and speak about politics from a bourgouise independence standpoint. working class spaniards are spanish speaking, as a fact, and the ghettos in spain are not in those northern, richer communities. the voice of the voiceless is not a catalan asking for independence, its a kid from andalucia trapping to save his gipsy family. even if theyre from the north, they usually are immigrants from poorer regions or gypsies. stop thinking the oppressed are the rich barcelona indepes
