I am so proud of myself. A senior, I watched the video and replaced the sash cords in my 118 year old house. Because of the storm windows, the double hung window glass hadn't been cleaned in over 30 years. Thank you for posting such a thorough video. I used my own method for determining the length of the cord, and it worked. Now, just 25 windows to go. 😅

I replaced an old original broken sash cord on a heavily painted window frame more simply without any disassembly. I used a hacksaw to cut out one side of the original double pulley, attached a new cord to a powerful small magnet, installed a new pulley and attached the other end of the cord to the top/side of the window using a screwed in small metal clip that extended s lightly into the channel - no mess - a lot less work - no repainting -works perfectly well.

Top video. I'm about to give it a go, and replace a pane of glass too. Already did one sash window, but only the bottom needed fixing but I had so much trouble getting the weight covers off which I now realise was probably because I didn't take off the parting beads!

I understand it’s a beginners guide ( I’ve been doing sashes for 30 years) but I always tell people before they take the parting bead off. Just screw a screw an inch under the top sash , incase it’s no longer attached to the cords and could otherwise come crashing down once it free

The purpose of sash Windows was, in the summer you open the top and the bottom. The hot air rising will then flow out the top of the window allowing cool air from outside to come in at the bottom. In winter you keep the top one closed. Then the hot air stays in. Fresh air will come in at the bottom.
