I love coffee and reading and am so glad I found you Alexander! I intend to buy your books. I'm also into fountain pens since I had hand surgery. I'm always Journaling and writing the Bible. I'm learning things more deeply by writing it. The pens are a huge help. Looking forward to your next video. No rush. Blessings

I really enjoyed your video, Alexander. It was interesting and you introduced the differences between the journals in a very clear and lovely way. I didn't know Lochby, great to know this brand, I will see the other videos you made about them. I use the Traveler's notebooks most of the time, but I also have Moleskine (I use the Kraft Caher L, soft cover) and Leuchtturm and they are wonderful, but I really love the traveler's notebook system the most, because of the idea of taking out a finished insert and put inside a new one! But I really love the others as well. Leuchtturm has such a wonderful quality to the papers and covers and Moleskine is wonderful when it comes to writing freely. I haven't tried Galen Leather yet but I heard they are really fantastic. Such a great review! Thank you so much for sharing and congrats on your new book!

Thank you so much for your continued support! As someone who has tried a lot of notebooks, I thought it would be easy to breakdown the different brands and give the pros and cons for all. Not to mention they’re all fountain pen friendly paper!

I prefer the Leuchtturm over the Moleskine. For me, the Moleskine paper was too rough for me write with my fountain pens on it.

I'd love to know what pen and ink you're using to ever say these words in the same sentence...... "Moleskine" and "great paper" where fountain pens are concerned! Wow. They are well known for the worst paper possible. Anyway, I'm glad it works for you 👍🏻 I still love Moleskine but won't use one again until they sort the paper out, unless I'm using a biro, in which case yeh I'd carry my Moleskine pocket book 🙂

Well, not really. Some Moleskine paper is now very, very good for fountain pens. You just have to get lucky and buy one with paper made in the right country. I have an expanded Moleskine that bleeds like crazy, but a friend has one that barely ghosts, even though the paper in the expanded notebook is very, very thin. Moleskine isn't bad, it's just inconsistent because the paper is made in at least three countries, so it's the luck of the draw. Moleskine paper was actually very good before about 2012. Then everything changed hands, and the paper was terrible. Now it seems they're at least looking for good fountain pen paper, and may have found it. If you can get a Moleskine with a blue quality control sticker, it should be good for fountain pens. QC stickers of a different color won't be very good. We "think" the paper with the blue QC sticker is made in Vietnam. Time will tell. And Moleskine is certainly not the worst paper possible. I have many notebooks with far worse paper for fountain pens.

I should preface and admit that my moleskine was purchase nearly a decade ago. So perhaps the paper was better at the time of me getting it. The fountain pen I used was a standard TWSBI GO in medium nib with Waterman’s Ink. There is slight ghosting but I will admit it is not even a close comparison to Tomoe River. The paper isn’t super smooth nor is it without its faults. Still, I would use it. Thanks for your pointers.

I just can't make the Traveler's Notebook system work for me at all. I don't like the size of the paper, it doesn't lie flat, and it's just too restrictive for my personal needs. That's not my experience with Leuchtturm and Moleskine. It may be the inks I use, and the medium nibs I use, but neither paper is good at all for me. I get extreme ghosting, and some bleeding, with both brands. I will say the new Leuchtturm with 120gsm paper is a different story. It handles my fountain pens just fine. Moleskine is just terribly inconsistent. One will be great, and the next will bleed like crazy. Moleskine paper is made in at least three countries, and most say this is what causes the inconsistency. Probably so. I do sometimes use both the 1917 and a Moleskine, but never with my fountain pens. Right now, I have the Moleskine expanded notebook. Four hundred pages. Fountain pen users seem to have figured out that a blue quality control sticker means high quality, fountain pen friendly paper, and the other colors mean poor paper that will ghost and bleed. Anyway, I am enjoying the expanded notebook. I just wish I could use my fountain pens in it, but I tried on the back page and they bled right through. I almost never use a pen loop. I carry several fountain pens wherever I go, so I use a pen pouch. I also carry a notebook, a small graphite drawing kit and a small watercolor kit, plus just a few other goodies, so I either take a messenger bag or a small backpack wherever I go. I even carry a small fishing kit, and my walking "stick" telescopes into a fishing pole. I like to fish as I'm writing. My family makes me carry my Fire Tablet and a cell phone. I've had two heart attacks and they worry. I was a professional writer for thirty years, right up until I had a massive health crisis about twenty-five years ago. It took years to get back on my feet. Now I'm slowly starting to write again, and back to buying far more notebooks than I need. I've always used the Oxford brand of Black n' Red as my personal journal. I bought my first in 1969. I still love the Optik paper, and the way they look on a bookshelf. But I can't resist buying just about every notebook I find. Fortunately, I have grandkids at about every stage of school, and I pass any notebook I don't like to them. They each probably have enough to get them through school. Maybe even college. Anyway, I sold five novels under my own name, several with pseudonyms, and even more under in-house names for publishers. I also sold somewhere around a hundred short stories to magazines. Unless I messed up and let a deadline get too close, I always wrote in longhand. I did accept very tight deadlines now and then, and just didn't have time for longhand, so I had to use a typewriter or a dedicated word processor, if you know what these were. But whenever possible, and more often than not, I wrote in longhand. I used pencils for almost ten years, then switched to fountain pens and never looked back. Now I'm sixty-nine, and I can just take it easy when writing, so I'm filling up notebooks of every type. Most of what I'm writing now are short stories and humor, but all those years as a writer I had two novels I wanted to write but didn't. These were back burner novels, and I was always too busy to move either one to the front burner. Now I'm not busy so I also started writing one of them.

Moleskine can be very inconsistent from what I’m gathering. I still enjoy mine every now and then. Sounds like you’ve had quite the career! Congratulations to a lifetime of achievement. Hope you’re able to get those two novels out into the world soon!

How big is the last Moleskine? A4?

I’m looking at it now, it’s slightly smaller. I think it’s considered their XL sized Moleskine which is 7.5 x 9.5.

I'm surprised you like Moleskine notebooks. Their paper is some of the worst I've ever seen for fountain pen use.

I believe my moleskine was from about 2014. I heard they switched papers and stuff so maybe mine is one of the good ones. It’s not perfect by any means with ghosting but it’s good enough to read what I’ve written back. I usually use a TSWBI go when I write in my moleskine.
