I really like the way you broke this strum down into smaller manageable parts. Practicing with the muted strings is a great idea...I was able to concentrate on the strum and not be worrying about fingering chords.

Finally, someone who can teach me the island strum! You do not know how many videos I have watched and failed. I noted that you are using a technique that we speech language pathology is use in teaching strategies to improve language skills. It is called backwards chaining and it really works! Kudos to you!

I read a book very early in my career as a music educator - Rhythmically Moving, by Phyllis Weikert (mid-1980s) - a P.E. Teacher, who taught folk dances. Her method of using speech to teach rhythmic movement was instrumental in my development as an educator. I will have to look up backward chaining. Thanks!!! So glad my instruction was helpful.

This was a GREAT lesson. I taught myself to play and I never learned strumming patterns. I have been stuck in a strum that was self created but not always good for what I’m playing. Thank you for posting this.

I have watched so many videos trying to learn this stumming pattern. I know this one is considered quite simple but for some reason I really struggled with it. No one else explained it this way or showed these types of exercises to help build the muscle memory. It made all the difference for me. You're very pleasant to follow along with. Thank you!

I am so glad I could help you on your ukulele journey. I see students struggle with the Island Strum all the time. It isn't quite simple at all. I remember when I started to learn it, and I had years of classical training and percussion under my belt and it was a process.

I am watching this for the second time (and I am sure I will do so many more). I am trying to nail the pattern of [DOWN (strum) - UP (space)] -- [DOWN (strum) - UP (strum)] -- [DOWN (space) - UP (strum)] -- [DOWN (strum) - UP (strum)] ...It is so easy when i type this out..but training myself for that "change" of when I strum and when I do not....is difficult...but I am following and trying to NOT say "oh yeah, I know how to do this part...." Trying to all your drills and techniques...they have worked when given the chance...

The Island Strum is not easy. I had been playing and teaching steel pan (steel drums) at the University level AND was playing drum set when our real drummer couldn't make it. Even with all that rhythm experience, I had to work diligently to learn the Island Strum and sing at the same time. Be patient, it will come if you keep at it. I have known folks who have worked at it for a year to get to the comfort level. Remember, you can still have a ton of fun just doing downstrums and learning chords. Thanks for the update on your progress. Come join us for one of the patron jams.
