I really enjoyed seeing this video. I'm in Ireland too. Can you do this with Begonias that you have bought as rhizomes?
@GardeningatDouentza

Hi there. Good question. Begonias are divided into different groups. All of the following can be propagated from leaves, as shown in this video : cane-stemmed begonias, rex-cultorum begonias, rhizomatous begonias, shrub-like begonias. The semperflorens and tuberous begonias cannot be propagated in this way. I presume the begonias you are talking about are the tuberous summer-flowering ones so the answer is, unfortunately, no! Try propagation with basal or stem cuttings for this group! I hope this helps.

Will direct morning sun change the color? I bot what I thought was Makado Silver and I gave it super thrive and it sits in a sunny window facing east. Well wouldn't you know it, it turned a beautiful red. Do you think it's the Sun or the superthrive? It does not look anything like it did when I bought it, but beautiful nonetheless. Love your videos! I was wondering, when you do propagation by leaf slitting, what are the light requirements?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 9 ай бұрын
Thank you. Your comments are much appreciated and welcome to the channel. I would keep the leaf cuttings in a relatively low-light situation. Perhaps on a north-facing windowsill. They do need light but, as with the parent plants, not high light. So keep in similar light conditions as the parent plants! Hope this answers your question.

I have a couple of questions for you. When you first placed the mother leaf into the pot you sprayed the soil and covered it with cling wrap. How long did you leave the cling wrap on the pot? Also when did you water and how often? Thank you. Love your videos. Julie

Hello and good morning. With this propagation method I watered only once as the cuttings are covered and in a closed system therefore the water cannot escape. Once the lid is removed, attention to watering is necessary. I left the cover on until I saw baby leaves. Hope this helps.

Wow. this is so helpful. I have a few leaves that I didn't press into the medium--they actually have risen out of the soil. It seems they are growing a root system off of the little stem that was left. Should I try to add soil up to the level of the leaf, press them flat and see what happens? Or leave them and see if the roots produce a baby? Also, how long did you leave them in plastic to maintain humidity?? The whole 6 weeks?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Lots of begonias will root by just placing a leaf on a stem in a glass of water or soil (see my latest houseplant tour video). I would say to leave your cuttings alone and soon they will make top growth. I left my leaves in the sealed plastic box until I noticed the new baby leaves coming. When you move them out, keep a careful eye on watering as they can dehydrate easily. Hope this helps.

Forgive me if I missed you saying when is the best time of year to do this leaf propagation because it does take at least 4 months to see if it took. I live on the east coast, and think keeping those 'months' in mind, i would say possibly in the month of December, which brings the 4th month, the beginning of Spring. Would you agree or does it matter at all?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it matters too much when you do leaf propagation. I guess spring is ideal but I have regularly done it in winter, as with this video.

Roots can grow within a few weeks but you won't know this. Only when little plantlets appear on the surface will you know that your cuttings are successful. This can take up to a month and a half. Hope this helps.

I’ve seen videos where the cut the leaf into multiple sections between veins and then just put the bottoms of those sections in soil. Is this essentially the same method except they are just coming from the bottom where the leaf was cut instead of from all the little slits on the veins? Thank you.
