A great place to check out just south of Quartzsite with lots of free boondocking camping (hardly anyone was there when I was there a few days ago) is the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge off of US 95 midway of Quartzsite and Yuma AZ. The hike is only 1/2 mile from the parking area up the mountain to the Hidden Palms Canyon. From the top, you can see all the way to Quartzsite AND mountains that are way over in California!

When you trek the dunes did you find wagon remains? Used to be many seeps and springs in the sand hills. They're gone now just as the spring at Big Spring, Comanche spring IN Ft Stockton and many others do to the irrigation of crops NOT SUITABLE for being raised in West Texas including the panhandle. Original settlers in Odessa hit water at 45 ft. 20+ yrs ago, folks gave up and moved. Water was gone at deeper than 125+ ft. Like they say, only man and rodents foul the nest. Which destroys the habitation for all creatures
