Behind the Magic: Creating the Kaiju for "Pacific Rim"

Although "Pacific Rim" begins more than a decade into the battle with the city-destroying Kaiju, in this video the visual effects team at Industrial Light & Magic will discuss the process of creating the incredible race of alien monsters from the earliest stages of concept and design. I love how the Kaiju are so very distinctly "Del Toro", you can kinda feel them as being props from a Del Toro set that has his unique style. with the slight disproportionate limbs, the tentacles, the eyes- especially the eyes are all very distinct "Del Toro".

Amazing work as usual! did you use Houdini for both character animation and for the sims as well? what about the fluid sims?

This is truly spectacular. I admire all of the work you guys do, especially on this film. I hope we get to see how you guys did the Jaegers and all their moving parts. And I reeeeallly want to see one of these videos about the water of Pacific Rim. You guys are the best!

I was wondering. What size textures did you guys use on the kaiju and what did you use for the muscle/ fat simulation. I'd love to be able to do something even one tenth as good as that
