In September 1991, Guns n roses released two albums Use your Illusion volume one and two, an industry first of two separate albums on the amp day. They were arguably the biggest band around with the world at their feet, behind the scenes though, they band were showing signs of the arduous toil of this achievement, the is the story behind the album and how it was recorded.
This is the story of how it was recorded and the techniques and equipment used.

In Slash’s autobiography, Axl went through every patch on every synthesizer and workstation for November Rain. The choir section is actually artificial but in weird way sounds organic 😊

Without Axl none of this myth could have happened; in his own words (speaking to the monkey): "You wrote things (on that autobiography) that never even happened". He was found dead on an elevator tho'. that's the reason why Axl made them sign the band's name off for him. They were behaving like a piece of shit. We all have proof that without the Mightiest Tiger they were a fucking random grungy hard rock average garage band with their parody name and those shitty records they did... while the Rose of Rock recorded Chinese Democracy leaving a priceless jewel in the history of Rock.

@@CaaPoraSpirit I prefer Izzy's writing, it's more subtle: Mr. Brownstone, Patience, Dust N Bones, You aint the first.... Oh by the way, GnR wouldn't be anything without Slash's guitar work. I love Axl too, but you can't deny Slash's contribution. And finally, Slash is no monkey - you should speak with respect.

For songs like 'November Rain' and 'Don't Cry' and 'Estranged' - these big, sort of epic pieces - me and Axl sat, I believe over there on the floor [points], we ordered some Russian caviar, we had a bottle of vodka... and we listened to 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me' by Elton John," the drummer continued. Upon hearing the tom fill in the John song, Rose said to Sorum, "I want you to do that, or something like that, on 'November Rain.'" The catch was, the singer wanted this "signature drum fill" to also appear on "Don't Cry" and "Estranged." "I said, 'You want me to use the same drum fill?'" Sorum continued. "He said, 'Yes.' So I did the most famous fill that drummers give me shit for all the time, it's called the 'Pat Boone-Debby Boone.'"

Thank you so much for this. I really enjoyed this mini documentary. A couple of additions for this if I may. The UYI tour did not start with Rock in Rio in January 1991. The tour started in late May 1991 in East Troy Wisconsin. Also, "Double Talkin Jive" was being recorded at Studio 56 on Santa Monica and Orange and unfortunately some poor soul's remains were discovered behind the studio. That is where Izzy came up with the lyrics. Axl was arrested for an alleged neighbor dispute at this same exact time which was late October 1990. I was 17 years old when UYI finally came out. The anticipation for that double disc album was building for over two years. People honest to God were delirious just to know that GNR were still a functioning band. Axl also moved into one of the recording studios, which one I don't know. He said in an interview that he was desperate to make something beyond AFD.

I'd like to share the ONE GnR story I have. Saw them at Hershey Stadium around that time. Skid Row opened and worked the crowd to a FRENZY. GnR came on and played 3 or 4 of their new epics and promptly killed the energy. Duff got on the mic and yelled 'you people are DEAD'. Got a little better when they started playing some actual rock songs, but man what a lost opportunity.

I'm a guy from the dark.. Alternative Rock, Industrial, Indie, Prog... etc.. But in the end, i'm just a fan of music.. Learned to play guitar, also because of that.. But i have to say.. Use your Illusion I & II, are true masterpieces of rock. 1991... Maybe the best year of all times, to those who really love music... Not 1 genre of music... Just Music.. Some examples of 1991 : Nevermind - Nirvana Ten - Pearl Jam Achtung Baby - U2 Metallica (a.k.a. Fast Foward to 2024.... We're in Sahara Desert..... No water... no emotions.. almost no life at all.. Creativity was demanded by us, on those days.. Today... well.. i won't talk bad, some thing are fine..... But it's a universe much much smaller... Claustrophobic.... Repetitions and tired formulas are Kings, just like the movies....

That’s what I’m saying he couldn’t play Locomotive the way they wanted it and that’s one of the reasons they booted him. There’s early demos of him playing it on KZfaq and it has a different swing feel to it. They wanted a more technical drummer like Matt to do it. This video is saying he kept messing up on Civil War that pissed everybody off. I always heard it was Locomotive. If you’re saying that Civil War is the only track he played on then they must have been happy enough with it to keep it so I wouldn’t think it’s the one that got him fired.

Slash is the reason I picked up a guitar at 7 years old. GnR has always been, and still is my favorite band. That said, they were never as good once they let Adler go. He had a bounce to his playing that Matt just doesn't have. You can easily hear a degradation in the quality of the rhythm section when they got Matt. Duff never meshed with Matt the way he did Steven. I feel like Steven being replaced was all Slash and Axl's doing, even though Slash and Adler were supposed to be friends. I mean, it was a heroin addict firing a heroin addict and alcoholic because they were too fucked up. That's ridiculous. There's plenty of footage from the early 90s where Slash played like complete shit because he was so messed up.

With the UYI albums, G'n'R zigged when they should have zagged. The rawness of "Appetite" fit right in with what the newer grunge bands were doing. G'n'R was one of the few 1980s bands that could have continued into the 1990s with credibility, because they didn't need to change what they were doing. What they did instead was drop a bloated, pretentious and over-produced double album that was just the sort of thing 1990s music was rebelling against. Or I should say that's what Axl did.

The rhythm guitars are buried on these albums. You can hardly hear them. Also, Axl was starting to lose his voice by these albums. Most songs on AFD he sings in his falsetto. On UYIs he rarely uses his falsetto, but sings in his mask voice really loud, because he can't hit high notes consistently anymore. Of course losing Adler hurt, but everyone else has already stated that. Offsubject from the UYI albums, but I wish that they could have found a way to keep Izzy as, at the least, a studio musician. I also wish that as time has gone by that Axl would have given up the vocals job to the best Axl impersonater on the market, as his voice has an incredibly short shelf life.

There's no such thing as a JCM 800 2203 'four input model'. For the four input ones, it's just JCM 800 1959 for the 100 watt and JCM 800 1987 for the 50 watt one. They are basically a Superlead Plexi in JCM 800 clothing. I had one, which I bought with a refund after my JMP 1959RR Randy Rhoads amp blew up two weeks after getting it new. The JCM 800 2203 is pretty much just the JMP 2203 with the newer look. The master volume model, which cascades the two halves of V1 and has the MV between the tone stack and phase splitter tube. They were hassled in the late 1970s by a distributor to update the styling of the amp line up, which is why JCM 800 happened.

All the songs on these albums written during the Appetite era I can only imagine how cool Adler's drum parts were. His sound and all those little hooks he does with Duff feeding off of them would have made the albums tolerable. Adlers fault though. And the band was in too fragile of a state to wait and coach Adler back to his senses. Having been a fan since a month after Appetite's release i knew the band was over when adler was out.

I heard Civil War on the radio multiple times way before the albums were released, in 1990. Then it disappeared until the album was released. Weird. I think the piano was missing from the version I heard in 1990.

Use Your Illusion I and II are the biggest letdown in rocknroll. GNR exploded out of nowhere and set the rock world on fire with Appetite. Then we got those half assed EP's, then waited for years for the next album to drop, and that shitty offering is what we got. No band rocketed to fame faster and higher, and no band just imploded faster and lower than GNR. Thanks Axl...

I liked the original band, especially when Addler was still sober enough to drum. His groove was slinky and very Rock N Roll. Unfortunately, I could never get past Axhole's vocals. They are like fingernails down a chalkboard. The only thing worse is his personality (or lack thereof). Of course my nobody opinion did not stop him from being a massive rockstar. Thanks MMO.

I’m with you there on Axl. I’ve never been a fan of the vocals from him and equate him to the likings of Joe Elliot, David Lee Roth and Stephen Pearcy. They were in bands that were great but they’re the only thing not great about it. It’s funny too because their personalities really do fit the bands they were in, they just aren’t very good singers at all. Never understood what people saw in any of these dudes, but hey they all made multi platinum albums and I’m still working the 9-5 grind so what do I know? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Well Asshole Rose his vocals did mature for the Illusion albums the first album was more less screaming. But no different than Bon Scots voice in which I find highly annoying I preferer Brian's voice. Thing us they work there ass off to get to the top and Rose's ego destroyed it all. But look at him now a washed up rock singer that can't move or sing on stage al because he didn't take care of himself.

FFS wake up and smell the bullshit. 4 bottles of vodka per day? Always off their tits on heroine? Yeah OK. This hasn't been exaggerated at all to promote a certain rock n roll image for the band? I guess slash just became amazing on the guitar by magic without needing to practise for several hours per day whilst sober? and probably the best rock album of all time just wrote itself and recorded itself, whilst the band members were slouched around completely wasted. Absolute nonsense. It takes hard work to be this successful, not being wasted the whole time. 😂
